Thank you for the information and encouragement! I do want to mention that while other rodents can carry the EPM protazoa, horses can only contract EPM from the protazoa that lives in opossum feces.

@daniel_moretti It would be close to impossible for the number of horses that have EPM to have been exposed to the fecal material or urine of Opossums as the only vector of the condition, however there may be contamination in the feedstuffs, hay , grain, pellets etc. There is simply not a large enough population of Opossums in areas of diagnosed equines to account for the infections.

I would love more information about ivermectin allowing the epm to push through the blood brain barrier. I just found out my yearling has EPM a few days ago after knowing something was going on for about a month. He was recently gelded and I believe that caused the case to flair up but I actually had given him ivermectin the week prior thinking maybe he just had worms because he wasn't shedding out like all our other horses and was dull and lazy. Well, since giving him the ivermectin he QUICKLY lost significant weight and muscle and atopped being able to swallow water. I think he is coming around now after a few days of medication but I have no idea how well he will fully recover because he was pretty sick. I just would love more information about the ivermectin and to possibly share my experience as it seems to make sense now thats why he progressively got worse!

Oh my goodness, I'm definitely going to ask our vet about EPM regarding my horse. I've been blindly treating for ulcers with slippery elm root, and he's been somewhat improving, but he sounds so similar to your story.

No it's a blood test...an IFAT , (I am a veterinarian.) You can do a spinal tap and compare with the blood titers but that's pretty risky and not necessary to screen and surely not necessary before starting treatment. UC Davis has come up with a correlation. So if the titer comes back 1:640 or greater, there is like a 90% chance that your clinical signs are related to epm. I have lost a horse to epm, and have one that I am rehabbing right now. Fortunately he is high functioning and safe to ride.

@@traceyrambles8287 thank so much for the information. I lost a horse at 1 year old, and now one of my other horses at age 28 has signs of epm. I would like to have him tested but have been told by my vet he would need CSF tested to be sure. That would mean hauling to MSU in Michigan. He is not stable to travel.

I have never heard ivermectin pushes EPM past the blood brain barrier!!! I often use ivermectin not just for deworming, but also for the ticks and prevention of Lyme infected ticks from latching on. Where did you find this out? I would love to look into it to which the pros and cons.

I was just curious, are there any preventatives for EPM? Also, how common is it for a horse to get reinfected once treated?

IAs far as I know, as well as what the Veterinarians I work with tell me - There is no preventative measure you can really do at this time. It’s common, and not only that, you also often times have to re-treat a few times because the medication only kills the parasite at a specific life cycle, and so as the others grow and evolve it will potentially cause another flare up. Stress can also cause flare ups along with vaccines. The best bet currently, is to re-treat 1-2x a year with a gentle medication

To prevent EPM steam your hay. The cost to buy a hay steamer is cheaper than the cost of the EPM medication.
