The Hollar Homestead

The Hollar Homestead

In 2017 we realized that being stuck in the rat race wasn't getting us anywhere - and definitely not anywhere HAPPY. So, we're trading in "normal" for making our own path. After suburban homesteading in Southern California for a few years, we've sold most of our "stuff", packed up the rest into a travel trailer, traveled the United States with our four kids to find our forever homestead, and are now revitalizing an old homestead in North Carolina! We live small, love hard, and have one major goal - to LIVE a life worth living.

I was thinking pig boards would work well for moving those piggies. A few boys with quarter sheets of plywood with handle holes cut in them, herding the pigs toward the gate. Well, maybe next time. Glad you got them where you wanted them in the end! 🙂 I love watching all that you do on your homestead, seeing the kids helping with whatever you are working on, and Meg is a rockstar cooking all those meals from scratch for your big family! ❤

It make sense to me that the small pigs do not want to invade the large pig's territory. Why did you not make them a passage on the outside of the big pigs territory? A hole in their fence next to the big pigs would let you add the net on the outside of both pens using the net as one side of the passage and the fence of the big pigs as the other but without invading the big pig's territory. Lead the little pigs out of both pens to the other pen and back in. You have enough net to do this.

Hey guys, I was listening to the shop talk podcast and heard Ben talking about feeling guilty about not filming stuff and having a lack of motivation. I want to say... please give yourself grace! It's OK to want to not film everything so you can get some needed things done, just do you! You need to find joy in your life as well. So, sometimes don't film, get things done and do a show and tell after the fact. We love you guys and all your channels. So please cut yourself some slack and give yourselves some grace. ❤

That looks really good. Giving me ideas for my leeks. The allium family seems to have been hit hard by the funky weather patterns this year. My garlic and onions were all very poor. Even shop bought onions are rotting fast, not storing for more than a month or so. Can only hope my leeks perform better by the time they're due late winter.

Hello Ben & Meg, my husband and I have been watching for some time now, we both enjoy watching your family grow and how well you work together as a couple. Meg is a wonderful cook and baker, I enjoy watching her creativity. While Ben, you are equally creative in the outside working on your farm. When I was growing up my grandparents worked a large farm so the things you guys do really rings true to me. We called them farmers back then…

Donna here, it just occurs to me that the twins are older now and they might want a bit of privacy. Do they ever get the use of the camper that you have sitting by the shed? Do they have a place to do their " own thing"? I just remember what it was like when I was their age.
