Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down-the San Francisco−based band fronted by singer and songwriter Thao Nguyen-released their fourth album, A Man Alive, on March 4, 2016. Following the critical success of We The Common (2013), which was largely inspired by Thao’s volunteer work with the California Coalition for Women’s Prisoners, A Man Alive is an evolution in both subject matter and sound. Thao says: “I wanted A Man Alive to be beat- and bass-driven-rather than guitar-based-extending and elaborating upon the hip-hop influences of the previous record. A Man Alive is more instrumental, more riff- and loop-centric, and has more manipulated sounds.” The Get Down Stay Down are at their best on this record, and Thao herself experimented with programming drumbeats for several tracks, although live drums are also played on every song.

I was once in the library, working on my thesis. This song came on Spotify. I stopped what I was doing, I just listened, and cried and cried.

I first listened to this song on youtube and thought it was ok. But I recently had the privilege to see Thao perform it live at Asbury Hall in Buffalo, NY. Hearing the story behind the song, seing and hearing the raw emotion made me appreciate it so much more and touched my heart to tears. The song made me think of my own mother and her struggles for freedom from Apartheid South Africa to make it to America and all the refugees and migrants risking their lives for freedom. I still think the live version was better, but now listening to the recorded version has so much more meaning. I sometimes use The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Ann Fadiman about Hmong refugees in USA. Fadiman brings up the Vietnam war, displaced people, and refugees. Next time I teach it I will definitely use this song as an introduction and another source . Thank you Thao, from a fellow daughter of a refugee!

This song so powerfully conures a secret pain I carry for my past self, for the pain she suffered and the quiet redemption I seek for her every single day. It is the marriage of my two lives and an apology to the one of me who I should have saved from so much hell

Enjoyed this piece when I first started listening to the album a few weeks ago. When I finally started paying attention to the lyrics, I was floored. Crushed. Heartbroken. What a beautiful tribute to the loss, sorrow, and afterlives of war. The more I listen to it, the more I'm brought to tears. Wishing for peace and healing for all whose lives have been shaken by violence.

I've listened to this song like 12 times today. Ten times yesterday probably. I love it so. I've really been crushing on your whole discography this year more than any other artist, by far. Thanks for uplifting me and reminding me what masterful musicianship and literate emotional writing is in this hard world o' ours. I love you. I hope you're having the best day ever y'all. ♥️🌿🍀

I saw y'all in Dallas about two months after this. The next day I myself was moving down the interstate. I did that a couple more times too. Then I even flew away too. This song brings me back to that Deep Ellum dive in 2008 when I didn't know the stings ahead of me, nor comprehend the meaning behind me. It's been a crazy 14 years.
