Great video, I learned what the actual cone and biscuit are and what they do for producing sound. I am awaiting delivery of my first resonator guitar, it's a used Johnson and it's something I hope I can play and enjoy with slide.
The first blues I learned were Robert Johnson and John Hurt was in the 1960's , I had to learn it with a record player , it was a painful way to learn and took years to play , but I did it , anyways I enjoyed your lesson it was very good .

Interesting. Pearce for me. But, what do I know? 😊I bought a cheap Gretsch Boxcar and, I believe, the string gauge it comes with are 16’s! Is that right? Too heavy for me but I was thinking maybe they have to be thick to get that sound? Hmm. What about 12’s?
Not sure what comes on it, but my Gretsch Honeydipper came with something much lighter. Definitely D'Addarios because I remember the colored ball ends but I'm guessing they were 13's or 12's. It's been a while though :)
@@BluesGuitarInstitute it says EJ16 (.012-.053) Coloured ball ends. But, man! They’re hard on the fingers! Lol My Taylor has Elixir 12-53 but feel so much easier AND I feel confident enough to bend them…but not the resonator. Maybe shorter scale length on the reso? I’m going to try 10’s, what do you think? Lol

I oil the fretboard every time I change strings. Currently using the one from D'Addario.
I've played blues almost all my life and I'm giving you two thumbs up for your lesson . The older I got , the more I listened to blues from the 1920's and 30's .

Pracice with what you have if you cant afford another ot you accept zero progress. Iswitched my fred over to nylon hall end strings to practice Spanish / rumba. It works to keep from bleedingo festh and tippingfingernails to shreds umtil I can afford a flamenco or classical. If you wont practice blues unless your guitar looks like some old style blues plsyer congrat, you stereo type
The small one seems to bring more harmonics and sounds more crispy and engaging. My two cents.

This little riff was the first blues riff I ever played I've picked guitar for about 5 years now flattop finger style cross pick bluegrass guitar and rock I recently dove head first into delta blues style guitar thanks man hopefully this is just what I needed to keep it going anymore lessons like this on your page?

I love Dreadnoughts, but I am just not as familiar with the OM. The OM sounds very good, and I want one .
What is the action like? High?
I've gone through several experiments with the action on this guitar and I don't know where it was for this video. But in general, what I like and recommend is to set up the resonator with action similar to the action on my acoustics. The reason is that with slide blues, you'll fret many notes along the way and this setup strikes a good balance, making fretting doable. That said, you'll probably need a lighter touch with the slide.

I bought a cheap Gretsch Boxcar model and noticed that the string gauge is really heavy. Will I get the same sound with a lighter set? Plus, I’m determined to get a 14th fret resonator because I need to fret a few chords up there and can’t do it with the 12 fret jobber. Wish I could play like you. Lol Although, I did get those turnarounds you did. Even that one where the notes go in both directions! So cool! Thanks!

A very good lesson .... Sound wise : I like both .. Very different but very nice too. I know too well how badly a shoulder can hurt - so nowadays after more than 50 years I only use my big bodied guitars sparsely, one or two songs in a whole performance... I prefer a narrow nut and a close string space... But I'm seldom fingerpicking anything... .. - I consider buying a Dreadnought with walnut back and sides... Because it has more low end than my other acoustics I use - 1 OM and 2 00 guitars, and it is a little smaller than both my Old Guild jumbo and a new Epi Ej jumbo... The Epiphone jumbo is a very large guitar! Remember Brownie McGee .... I loved his playing - he certainly had strong hands to be able what he did - and he use his Dreadnought all his life ... I am very glad I could see him and Sonny Terry on stage many years ago... Oh I miss those days ... Here in Denmark we could go to a concert every month during the summer time and early autumn and see our heroes live, at small stages ... A privilegie long gone.. Something they had in common: They all played Guild dreadnoughts - more or less..
Your explanation of the difference in comfort and playability between dreadnaughts and OMs for fingerstyle guitar really nails it. I also believe the OM tone is more suitable, but maybe that's just me.

Can it be played without a slide?
Yes, but I think you'll lose a lot of the character of this song. To me, the sliding in between the notes is part of what makes this song so iconic.
Two months ago, I lost my middle finger in a log splitter accident. This might work for me if I can figure out some other chords. Thanks it sounds great.
Sorry to hear that, but like that you're still going. A lot of the slide tunes I play use 1 or 2 finger chords. Not sure if you were already playing slide, but I think you can get alot done without the middle finger because you'll leverage those big open tunings like crossnote but also open g, open d. I always thought 1 3/4” was my minimum for nut spacing and 1 7/8” better. Then I picked up a Santa Cruz D prewar and found out 1 11/16” with a 2 3/16” bridge spacing and a fuller neck carve is actually great for me and frankly excellent for fingerpicking. Moral of the story for me is “keep an open mind, play many guitars, and play the guitar that brings the biggest smiles”

I long ago decided dreads are ugly and boxy looking and I embraced the nice roundedness of OM, 000, jumbo, etc. Lately I have aquired a couple dreads on the cheap and I have to admit that I just love the lush husky tones!
