John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke U.

The mission of the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute (FHI) at Duke University is to encourage and enable serious humanistic inquiry, and to promote a heightened awareness of the centrality of the humanities to the quality of human life, social interaction, and scholarship in all fields. To these ends, we emphasize a broad conception of interdisciplinarity - one that encompasses all methods and approaches, and which acknowledges the importance of the core humanities disciplines - as well as scholarly work that examines issues of social equity, especially research on race and ethnicity in their most profound historical and international dimensions. In this ambitious mission, we are inspired by the late John Hope Franklin, James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of History.
This channel features event coverage from some of the papers & talks given here along with documentaries that demonstrate the incredible interdisciplinary work being done at the FHI.

Does anyone know which Freudian texts "about thought transference" was he referring to? I'm looking foward to read them and come to my own analysis/conclusion.

the black lesbian feminists: OK BUT HOW DOES THIS ReLATE TO BLACK LESBIAN FEMINISTS???? I could tell by their groping each other during a public lecture they were insufferable, but good job by her trying to frame her all too common revanchist victimhood based ideology as an interesting question

I'm going to develop a paranormal believability scoring tool. Does this already exist? I can't imagine how we got this far without having a systematic way to evaluate these claims. Items would include: Does the experiences have a financial incentive, do they have childhood trauma that could be suppressed and re-expressed this way? Is one aspect overly emphasized (like sex or climate)? Are they more rational or creative? Was their life before contact happy and balanced? Do they have a healthy skepticism or at least some sense of the improbability of their experience? Are they overly credulous? Are we?.. Things like that... Let me know.

I can easily imagine why, because there is a complete disconnect between seemingly conscious beings so that we don't have acces to anyone else's mind, and it may be there will never be technology that can interrogate consciousness.

Excellent lecture! It has been known for some time that Human centers of congregation (cities) are agents of cultural change. Most of Human prehistory is that of hunter-gatherers which are relatively small usually extended family groups. As these Humans moved North, the regular cycles of the Sun became more obvious which at the Equator, they are less so. The further North one travels, the stranger the day-night cycle becomes until in the Arctic Circle, day and night disappear entirely for months at a time. Consider the effect on a Human Mind even today. The need for small groups of hunters to congregate at one place to celebrate together makes perfect sense when faced with strange effects. Chaco Canyon is an excellent example of a huge complex for Human congregation and celebration. Humans have always liked parties because a good party defuses tensions and anxieties. and promotes bonding and good fellowship.

Well in rural Ireland we all have individual sceptic tanks which we are obliged to maintain ourselves. And 99.9% are properly maintained. It is the same in rural England. If you don't have the machinery to clean out your own tank, you help your neighbour with the harvest, or do a couple of milkings for them and they return the favour by emptying your tank with their slurry tanker. Why isn't there this type of co operation here. The government cannot be held responsible for everything. We are only a free state for less than a hundred years, after centuries of colonial rule, mismanagement and genocide. Yet Ireland standard of living is way ahead of parts of rural America. Why is this? A legacy of oppression and slavery? Lack of initiative and independent thinking?

Every black rapper that came out of Alabama and black player that played for University of Alabama that now play in the NFL should pull their funds together and help these people.

He doesn't know scripture very well. Jesus was close friends with Mary and Martha.. also there was a group of women who followed jesus in his ministry and "attended to his needs"... I.e. cooked for him. The reference to self castration was not a recommendation... it was just that a reference of what some do. Paul said it was "better to marry than burn with vain desire." The man is still steeped in the darkness of Roman Catholicism.
