  Probably nothing wrong with that locomotive at all, I’ve seen this type of thing happen to diesel engines working hard at night, you might not even see those carbon sparks during daylight.

  OK all you railfans; did anybody consider that the reason for the wheel slip and the turbo flame-up was: too heavy of a load for one locomotive to pull. They needed to call out some booster power to get this consist where it was going.

  There are diesel locos from 1958...1963 era which still run nicely. In comparison 1979 is not old like hell. Naturally they need service and cleaning off the carbon from exhaust systems. Why it slips so badly...wrong calculation of pulling power and friction conditions on that grade...the rails were ruined by that much of sparking by the wheels.
