    I haven't found much a difference in delivery times between the two. For longer trips, I take my Garmin for mapping capabilities. Typically they both need a clear sky and a few minutes to get a message out. With phones allowing for SOS calls more now, I'm hopeful the times for any device in an emergency will improve.

    4:58 - yeah. My Jervenbag Extreme was pretty bulky. Was one of my regret purchases because its apparent the bag is more for skiers with pulks, mushers with dog sleds or snowmobile patrol units. Literally impossible to put inside or outside any kind of winter-hiking backpack.

  • @ZaryaTheLaika

    2:26 - even vegans are kind of divided about down though. Like a lot of the environmentally-minded vegans are aware production of synthetic fills relies on destruction of wetlands (especially with Fort MucMurray oilsands), whereas you can get down jackets and sleeping bags second-hand from a garage sales

  • @ZaryaTheLaika

    I do wish companies stop selling 600-fill down. They perform the same as synthetic and the meat-ducks don't have great lives compared to 900-fill geese that are not used in meat production. If we're going to have a conversation about utility of agricultural byproducts, I much rather have that go into pet foods considering the enormous environmental footprints of "human-grade" pet foods with no clinical evidence the ingredients make a difference in the health of our pets

  • @ZaryaTheLaika

    If you want, I can forward an article about Finnish dog food production where they are having this massive issue where pet parents are demanding "human-grade" ingredients in dog food, yet at the same time fur-farms are being shut down and people don't want to scale back commercial livestock agriculture. Historically unwanted parts were used in pet food production, but then the byproducts got shifted to food for minks, foxes and raccoon-dogs when the paleo diet and gluten-free diet became a fad amongst health-conscious people and trickled down to pet parents.

  • @ZaryaTheLaika
    @ZaryaTheLaika2 ай бұрын

    Sorry for being weirdly nerdy about how 600-fill down from the meat-duck industry, which are not useful to anyone, spilling over into the outdoor industry. Companies get to sound "fancy" selling down jackets and down sleeping bags, while selling a product which is inferior to synthetic fill. It's wild.

    1:20 - my biggest problem with synthetic is they only last five years before losing their loft. But you will end up owning both synthetic and down if you do any kind of winter camping because the synthetic will wick moisture away from the down which prevents the down from freezing

  • @theoutdoorminimalist
    @theoutdoorminimalist2 ай бұрын

    Down has a great affinity for moisture, both from external sources and body sources, sleeping bags can get wet from both sources, as much as 4# of moisture per 8 hrs sleep. Down needs to be aired out every chance one can get, which isn't optimal in say the Olympics with 12' of average rainfall. Both fills need constant management in sub-freezing conditions, Will Steger's Artic Expedition syntehtic17# bags weighed 52# after a few weeks from ice via body moisture. Folks subjected to these conditions should read up on VBL. Further there are many kinds of synthetic fills; chopped, laminate, continuous fiber and others, research is required. A wet down bag will always be heavier than its synthetic counterpart which can be wrung out if neither is frozen.

    I couldn't help but notice you used a camera to film this? Its probably using plastic and components? I noticed you're using a plastic clacker for filming in between takes on your other videos instead of using a more sustainable metal one? And you're wearing synthetic fiber clothing? And the rim of your glasses is plastic? I like the message you're trying to provide here its a good ...standard..but could you bulk up your sustainability score please? On a more serious note, I don't know if you've been following life straw since the mid 00's but they started off as a thing for people dying of thirst in very poor countries to be affordably produced and life saving. As a means of making more money to do more charity work (they also make giant pumps for larger villages and camps) they've started making things for more financially secure markets that have the expendable income to have concerns about things such as sustainability and different colors/materials. They were figuring out a way to help people dying from access to diseased water sources before bill gates started dumping money into solar water purifiers to donate to africa....

Doesn't really help we get +40C summers as well. Double-coated or not, most dogs don't handle huge temperature swings well.

  • @theoutdoorminimalist
    @theoutdoorminimalist3 ай бұрын

    OSMO is made from recycled polyester and nylon yarns and backed (not coated) with a polyurethane coating for waterproofness. The blend of nylon and polyester isn't common in a tent fabric, and according to Nemo, it offers the best of both fabrics in terms of durability, weight, stretch, and water absorption. This makes it less likely to stretch when wet due to being a blend vs a mono fiber and all information in this video was obtained from Nemo Equipment. Hope that helps!

    @@theoutdoorminimalist First of i dont want to hate on you or your channel, i just dont want people to be misinformed and so i stand by my comment. If you make a youtube video about a product and act as if you knew what you talk about, i personally think you should know of what youre talking about. But i highly rate your response, so i will give you a little more feedback. I just checked nemos website and found a description of the osmo fabric. They call the PU coating a coating, i wouldnt know what else it would be supposed to be... idk. To say that it doesnt break down is absurd and they dont even say that. A coating that doesnt break down close to the way polyurethane does is silicone on both sides. Its only real downside is the fact that it can not be seamtaped by machines. It is a well known fact that nylon sags when when and when under tension, polyester much less so. Nemo even says the same thing on their website: "Hydrophobicity, low water absorption, and low wet stretch are provided by the polyester yarns". So their fabric doesnt sag as much because they partly use polyester. It still absorbs much more moisture because its mainly nylon though. Another thing i want to say is that anyone should be careful with the type of pseudo scientific graphs on their website. They make bolt statements and compare their fabric of which they dont even tell you exactly what type of yarn they use to some other fabrics they just call existing tent fabric x. Does anyone think they compared against any polyester in terms of sag? Let alone a sil/sil poly? No, they compared their fabric with the worst nylons they could find. If they even made actual measurements. Its marketing just like every iphone is supposed to be 3x as powerful as the last... If there isnt a scientific study with all the details and methods listed it is 100% bullshit. Hope that helps!

  • @theoutdoorminimalist
    @theoutdoorminimalist4 ай бұрын

    I understand why that seems ridiculous because IT IS for most dogs. In fact, for first-time backpacking trips, I'd recommend much less than 25% of their body weight because, like humans, dogs need to be conditioned to prevent injury and overexertion. It seems my delivery may have confused some viewers about which weight recommendation is appropriate for which types of dogs, so I appreciate the feedback. ☺ I will add, though, that working dogs and dogs specifically conditioned for trekking with heavy loads can fit within the higher 30-50% but that should be done responsibly and with great care. That's not the standard recommendation by any means.

    Great question! The Versa Flow allows you to be able to backflush the filter, clearing out all of the particulate and increasing the lifespan of the filter. If you consistently backflush the filter you can use it almost indefinitely. But, technically speaking, the filter should last up to 100,000 gallons before needing to be replaced. If you notice the filtration speed slowing, that's a sign to backflush.

    I'm so glad you enjoy the content! It is a very important topic that deserves far more air time. And believe me... if we had the funding, we would make a full documentary! In the meantime, if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend the doc The Devil We Know or the feature film Dark Waters.
