Nice project. You can use a Raspi4 or 5 directly rather than raspi zero + Arduino right? They have more pins that pi zero

Why not solanouds? Sound could be fixed by adjusting the overall input voltage to them or adding veritable resistors. Other issue is making sure the prices slide right.

Great video. This is great. Trouble is I have no 3D printer or CAD experience. I've messed around with Pi and Arduino but loose the plot with the programing. So My thinking is there is always a different way to do the same thing. 1: Big plastic box to hold components. 2: Married to an existing remote control vehicle. 3: For a camera I could use one of those cheaper WiFi security cameras. 4: learn CAD (FreeCad) to make some parts to marry to the control box. I did turn a wiper motor into a a servo with some grunt once, and controlled it by modifying a remote control unit from a cheap toy car. I, as they say am on the case. Thanks.

So the diagram that I showed in this video I animated directly in Adobe after effects. If you want a proper sandbox for testing electronics I would use TinkerCAD to start.

In yonder olden times, back even before KZread had high-definition video, I built a similar setup around my living room for O gauge trains. I couldn't bear the thought of any of these getting derailed from way up there ($$$!) so I took advantage of an ancient wall-mounted entertainment center left by the previous owners, and built out an around the walls loop at its height (about the same as the back of a typical couch), using pretty much the same tools you did, except for the 3D printer. Of course, building for O gauge meant the trains were _way_ less forgiving of tight curves than Lego trains (I have some really _large_ locomotives and freight cars) and so I wound up jigsawing 36" radius curves out of a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood, and built straight sections made of 1x3's, supported on 1x2's, crossing the room entrance with a lift-out curve equipped with removable legs. While I didn't document my build process, almost all of my (very small) channel's videos are of the trains I operate on said loop, giving views of pretty much all the engineering (heh) I performed.

That was really cool! Massive respect for diving head first into so many different new things in one project. If you can get access to a laser cutter, that would have made clean and quick work of a lot of that project. You can put painter's tape over the parts that will get cut, and any burn marks should end up on the tape and not the art. As far as having the eyes follow someone in the room, I have never done anything like that, but I'm pretty sure you can get a camera and hook it up to the electronics, and use existing tracking software. Not sure how difficult that would be to implement though. I could imagine a whole wall or gallery filled with different cat art, but all with moving eyes tracking people. That would be fun.

Very cool as always. Only adjustment I would make is a way to switch track from down below. And some sort of sensor that would stop the train if the track isn't switched....so it doesn't launch off again like it did during your test. Very cool either way. Agree with your decision to leave the wood grain showing. You could always stain it if you wanted a more finished look.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS! What a great build! Question out of curiosity, what is causing the audio anomalies at @1:44 and @1:53? I am super looking forward to your future project where you either make the train IOT enabled to allow folks to control it's motion or lighting (or livestream the view from camera), or the inevitable upgrade when you knock tunnels thru your walls and really have a project on your hands!! :D
