I've got a 300 rally and would like to keep the slipper clutch, but replace the frinction disks to stronger ones and remove the judder springs. Any advice on which friction + metal disks and how many of the do I need?
@pommeybikerАй бұрын
I havent found a clutch pack for the crf300 slipper clutch that doesnt include 2 half friction plates. So you would need to buy 2 clutch packs so you can take 2 full plates out of that to replace the half plates with. to make a full stack of full plates. I havent looked in a long while. So see if there are after market options. The ears/tabs on the friction plates are different from the cbr300/250 basket and are not compatible (which is why you have to install the basket)

Thanks for the great video! Any idea how effective the inverted pre-filter is at filtering? To me it makes sense that for filtering you want a funnel going into the snorkel, rather than a wide open cone on top of the snorkel, but it also makes sense that this greatly reduces the volume of air going in. Have you guys found that the inverted pre-filter still does its job?

Why do an oil change and tyre on a wr250?? Fresh tyre from home and fresh oil would do the entire trip
@pommeybiker2 ай бұрын
well the main reason is that it costs a huge amount of money to recover a bike from the desert, so you want to give yourself every single advantage to cross it in one attempt with no issues. If thats a $20 oil change, and extra traction with a $100 tyre so the engine doesnt have to work as hard, you could potentially save yourself thousands of dollars in recovery fees and a failed trip - i personally used the same tyre, but did do the oil change. Fresh oil just before the crossing as thats when it will work hardest and be hottest - Simon didnt change tyres or oil but also burnt his clutch (likley not because of the oil). If we didnt have spare clutch plates he would of really been screwed

I think this is incorrect. To my knowledge, the PAIR system is 'Open' by default, not closed. The solenoid's function is to shut the air supply off at the correct times, not to open it up, so unplugging it will allow the air to flow into the exhaust port even more. A simple solution to stop the PAIR system is to put a marble into the hose from the air box then reattach the hose to the air box. No air can get through; the PAIR system stops operating.

You need to read up on how a slipper clutch works: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qX6Dqa18ktmzn5s.html&ab_channel=MotorcyclistMagazine . It's not going to 'slip' when you're accelerating (unless the clutch friction plates are worn out) by design - the 'slipper' part of the clutch is only on heavy downshifts (so you don't lock up the rear wheel when downshifting too aggressively). The CRF300OL actually has a slipper/assist, so when you're hard on the throttle, the 'assist' ramp will actually apply more pressure to the clutch plates. This allows for only 3 springs, which gives a nice light clutch without losing the holding power.
@jackt3603Ай бұрын
Yes, this is exactly right. These clutches are also referred to as 'slipper gripper' clutch, as they help grip the clutch during acceleration and help slip during deceleration.

From what I know, just because there is no check engine light doesn't mean there are no error-codes being thrown in the ECU and putting the bike into a different (emergency)map. My Nuda 900r for instance had a defective exhaust sensor from factory. Noone knew until I got the ECU tuned and my mechanic found the error codes. The bike had been running fine in a secondary map for years.

I was going to comment on the original video to suggest the spark plug socket tool but resisted and watched to the end to find you had posted the update! - hence jumping on here to find you had discovered the demon hack. Awesome. Most praiseworthy videos. It seems you are one of the few that actually think about what tools can be put to what uses. And what fasteners are realistically likely to be needing tools. My rear shock mount needs a 19mm over the nut and an 8mm Allen to turn the bolt - but I am highly unlikely to need to remove my rear shock on an off road tour, so those tools get left behind. I have also changed out hex head bolts for Allen headed bolts so I leave ALL sockets behind, now only needing to carry 4, 5 and 6mm Allen bits in 1/4" hex drive. That's it. Interestingly, in the same vein as your creative approach, my sparkplug socket, being 16mm, drives a Draper 3/8" extension bar (the one with flats around the 3/8 female end) so I can use my flexi-sparkplug tool as a 3/8" driver for engine bolt tightening duty. And yes, it is 19mm outside across the flats so I can use the adjustable Bahco spanner to give extra leverage. And so it goes on..... Happy days
