I would Shove a Pi5 (8GB) with LoRa LoraWAN Shield or 2 Hack RF One SDR's ( or a few for Directional sectoring 433MHz & 838Mhz 915MHz) Nice Thing With the Raspberry pi (PI3 ~ Pi5) They All Support POE 24V ~ 48V DC over Ethernet cable 30W 80W you just need 2 Path Jumpers for the POE 4 pins However I would also Use Mesh WiFi v6 for Closer Nodes even run a Mesh Telnet BBS (bulletin board system) Terminal Mesh Service on both Wifi Mesh & LoRa WAN Mesh (After all it is a PI5 With SSD M.2 nvme ) so can run a OFF Grid micro Internet (LoRa & WiFi)

Damn you beat me to it! I was in bunnings the other day and saw those arlec units with the same idea in mind. Ive just built 2 repeaters the same way. The only difference was a 3d printed custom housing that attaches via the existing hinge mounts with waterproof cable tunnels similar to the arlec design. I'll upload the design and link here when I get a chance. I was concerned about the panel size and battery capacity so I'm glad the hear they stand up OK! Nice work.

What is the benefit of a node over a repeater? In a small isolated group of three devices communicating, which would go on the mast?

Way to go Matt! Looks Like it's my duty to build, install & be responsible for continuous maintenance of two or three Meshtastic LoRaWAN repeaters for the Alstonville plateau area, Lennox, Ballina, Buckombil mountain, Evans Head wrapping around through Woodburn, Coraki Dead straight back to Lismore!! >8-D

Im hoping meshtastic and LoRaWAN start getting a greater following over here in Australia as much as it has over in the UK. Be nice of there were more 'local' suppliers that didnt want to charge an arm and a leg for the stuff the UK and USA get dirt cheap

I'm a 56 yr old Aussie living in USA 21 yrs,... Just heard about Meshtastic the other day then stumbled on this video, well done ! I'm new into radio here & using GMRS but we have some frequencies which are free & unlicensed to use, also think it's cool that CB is still alive but this whole Meshtastic LoRa concept is pretty cool :) I'm wondering how much it cost you in AUD to set up both systems in the video.

Quite a few good US Meshtastic videos out there too. Always interesting to see what people are doing with Meshtastic in different countries. I don't know if we'll ever catch the UK though! The nodes in this video came in at almost $100 AUD. The solar panel and the enclosures are probably the most expensive things here. Batteries and the RAK or Raspberry Pi boards aren't too expensive. AliExpress has been a good place to go shopping for some of this stuff, but you'd probably get cheap solar panels and enclosures from Lowes or Home Depot over there. Rockland would be a one stop shop for everything meshtastic in the US. store.rokland.com/

@@GamingKing545 Antenna is good, homebuilt. My placement is not high, 19M ASL, but interestingly enough, in one direction along the long side of 500 m long park, I get contacts 5-10 km away, So it is definitely placement that is my issue, and possibly the other guy, he has his node under a wooden roof an I suspect there are too many nails tuned to 868 in it. Driving around town with my handheld, I never pick him up??

  • @mattrixon

The cable gland at the bottom isn't water tight, so any condensation that settles can exit through the hole.
