Hi! My name is Troy, and I am The Lanky Logger!
I’ve been logging Nova Scotia’s Acadian Forests my entire life! On this channel I cover all things logging - including tree harvesting and processing, tools and equipment used in the woods and the woodyard, maintenance and mechanical repairs - and just about anything else it takes to keep the cycle of logging going!
If you’re new here it would mean a lot for the channel if you took a moment to subscribe, and don’t forget to check me out on other platforms as well!

Neat little clip like watching this stuff those back tires got some tread on them
She’s a good old machine!
Nice machine
Thank you! It works well.
@@thelankylogger I have a tree farmer C5 forwarder they’re handy
Hard to beat the old iron.
Have you ever thought mybe this machine is not meet for you to run, I’m just saying
Don’t worry another 60 yrs plus the land will have timber again growing on it . Back in the logs 🪵 day with a chainsaw we logger run 28” to 32” bar less bend over on the back , plus back them we could 3 to 5 timber together in a straight line same on time and plus put up 9 to 11 cords day in spruce and fir in pulp 🪵. 😊
Yeah Lanky , Liberals want to shut down forestry . PCT here N.S. Bowater , Northern etc. 15 years . Yeah do my own thing now . Changing my woods to mostly hardwoods , No more pulp wood I had enough government B.S.
Frustrating isn’t it.
I almost want to unlike the video because of the digs it sounded like you were throwing from the 3 minute to 3:40 mark of the video 🤣
Oh you’re a good driver too. 🤣🤣
@@thelankylogger this seems forced lol
Keep up the great efforts.
Having to much fun
Tony your right clean it up before bark rotten get into it for sure . 😊
I needed to be done. Thanks
Tony nice little load of firewood 🪵. 😊
The good days.
Looking like a good start to this years firewood season! I don’t mind a little chainsaw work from time to time- but it sure cuts into the profit!
Feels so good to be set up for the season! And good wood that is cut properly. Hard to get.
Absolutely wonderful to see such pride and skill. I was taught in the Maritime Forest Ranger School in 1985 that forestry is a systematic operation...just as you explained it.
Exactly…. If everyone does their part. It makes it good for everyone 😁. Thanks
Always nice to see a good operator. Not sure I'd let him scratch my back with that clam but maybe. The guy that said wood is as good as gold nailed it.
Log hauler Vincent is a good operator. Nice load of logs Troy.
I am very pleased.
Looks good , some BTU's there !!!!
About 180 million. Should keep the house toasty for a bit.
Love it😊
Thanks, a wood pile like that is better then gold in my eyes.
It sure is!
Real nice looking pile I love watching someone run a loader that’s not banging it on the stakes you can’t hide experience that’s for sure ! Is that guys last name Croft that was driving that truck your are so right about how dry it is fingers crossed rain for this weekend !
He takes so much pride. Not only piling his wood. But maintaining his equipment as well.
Wow, awesome job by the truck driver. How many truckloads are there?
Five loads in total
Is this wood to split and sell for this coming winters use? Seems like it may only get a couple of months drying time after splitting to season.
Yes. It doesn’t seem to matter anymore. I will be processing right into November. I do not dry wood for customers. I always said it is their responsibility to get it early enough to dry it themselves. It’s just the way it’s been done here. Thanks
There are loads of sales like that. I am at the other end of the province and do my own firewood only so far, but have thought about doing extra to help clean up our woods.
Not the first pile he’s made with that loader. Nice to see someone take pride in their work for sure
He takes a lot of pride in his work. Makes my part of the process so much nicer!
Came here to say the same. Pride in his work for sure.
What is that 'whip' on your saw handle for??
We do cut to length here. It’s a 4’ measure. Saves using a tape. Much faster.
That is a very clever idea, thanks for your reply
Bigg Dann the legend
Great video nice working machine sounds like a Cummins engine to me I might be wrong on that . great idea to get that small wood cut with a harvester hard to cut productivily by hand . Love the loyal dog you have there .
Yes she has a 6 bt Cummins. She is a great companion🐕
Right on I have a 1996 230 A timberjack with the log lift 60 Loader my machine sounds like that it has a Cummins as well
Yes it would have a 3.9 bt4 Cummins. I had the identical machine years ago. Bought it used in 2000. It was a 96 as well with a log lift. They are a great machine. One of the best in my opinion. Simple to work on and tough.
It's great to see what I consider natural forest operations. Back to the basics and professional. Great video too.
Good work! Any chance you have a job opening? Im a forestry tech out of bc. Cant find no work out here!
That's the fastest moving Tree Farmer ive ever seen . My father in law has an old C5 from the 70s, and my brother ran a C6 for a number of years. Those two old machines weren't as nimble as the one in this video.
Great video, that dog living the life! I spent alot of free time as a young fella with my uncles n dad on these machines, but I remember the Tree Farmer a little different cab configure configuration. Was a Duetz air cooled if I remember correctly, back in the 80s.Was a good machine
And there is still lots of them working now. Can’t kill that old iron. Thanks
Perhaps an interview style video with Dan and a walk around of his machine. Great video as always. Stay safe
Good to see it's getting done. Have you found a pulpwood market ?
Yes. It is a very poor market though. A local pellet mill. But it’s gone and the woods is a clear blow downs. Thank
Smart to clean it up before there is a forest fire like what happened here on my end of the province
Absolutely
brush is some tidy
He did a great job! Thanks.
Ya that small wood is a lot of work to stump pile it like that it makes a neat job to haul with porter but hard on the back for sure . What mill do you sell your wood to an does the mill by the fir an spruce mixed or separate .
This wood will go to one of two local stud mills. This is 9’ studwood. And it will go as a mixed load spruce/fir load. Are you from the area?
Right on I’m from Weymouth Nova Scotia other end of the province my logs go to FREEMANS in greenfield
I have sent logs there before. Very nice!
Nice video. A tip for you if it's okay? The first tree you cut at 11:09 that landed across your strip. You could have limbed out the top side of it and left it to be used as a bench and then you could have felled the trees on the right side of your trail across it which eliminates bending over and makes for faster limbing.
I actually said to myself when I fell that tree. Wrong😆. With that small wood and little piles unfortunately is a lot of bending over. Thanks for the tip!
This is an old video made by NFLD forestry but it is a good one. kzread.info/dash/bejne/opOizphwYKice8o.html
Yes, we use that quite often too.
I feel like Kenny would approve of your rows! 😁
Yes I hope so Ron. He was a great teacher!
Workin hard buddy !! See you next weekend for some Play time !!!!
Always Wayne! See you next weekend buddy!
Nice videos
Some of the hospitals here in Nova Scotia burn wood chips for heat. They renew supplier contracts every two or three years. Understanding their chip requirements may put you at an advantage as some of the existing suppliers are using older technology and therefore not supplying great chips. Just a thought.
Saw the rant, I have 50 acres of fir that is a bit immature but the site is prone to end throw, ants and red but…can’t get a contractor.
It’s tough. If the industry was in better shape we would have more contractors around. But they are slowly dropping off.
And now if there is a high percentage of pulp no one will cut it because when they do they are on a quota and getting nothing for it. There for the land owner is getting very little. It’s a mess.
That was fun to watch. Nice job Troy.
It was fun to do! Thank you
Once you Buck with a long bar(mines a 28in) you will never bend over again.
32"with a 462. I took an ice pick to my screen, and run KY jelly for bar oil. Hand file, and cuts through anything like butter.
I currently have two saws with a cutter missing and i cant even tell...they cut great...just found you ...go husky
nice comparison video. also its cool to watch a fellow nova scotian ....thumbs up !!
He really did a nice job on the ported saws! Thanks
Makita bought out dolmar a few years ago... but they are gonna dry up cause Makita wants to completely do away with gas powered equipment in favor of battery powered equipment
Oh ok! That is how it went. I’m not all that familiar with Dolmar /Makita saws. But I do know one thing. That was a nice working saw. Thanks for letting me know!
When you’re trying to sharpen the chain I like to do strokes and not just back and fourth but that’s my opinion I guess
I do strokes as well. I just never take the file out of position on the back stroke. So it isn’t against the tooth on the back stroke. It is a much faster way to file. Thanks
I have recently gotten more into saws. I’ve had an old 51 that I got from a pawn shop here in town (Raeford NC) about 8or 9 years ago. It still runs like a top. Last year I bought a 585 with a 36 and 32 bars and just bought a 562 with a 24” and a 28” bar. I inherited our family farm of 56 acres here in NC and I plan on taking down a few big pines to slab up to build some barns and clear a few other spots. There’s a 395 at my local shop that’s been there for a bit and it calls my name every time I go in there. It’s eventually coming home with me , when he gets the price right. I’ll be checking out some more of your videos to glean what information I can from you. Be careful out there and much love from North Carolina down in the Lower 48🤙🤙
You never can have enough saws. Haha. Thanks so much!
@@thelankylogger I am learning that 😁
Have 92 cc big bore husqvarna ported decked for u to try
