Turning a barren yard in a region with only 300 millimeters of annual rain into a sustainable garden is no small feat. Yet, I'm taking on the challenge to create an eco-friendly, low-maintenance oasis that can thrive in a dry climate.

Starting from scratch, I cleared weeds, debris, and compacted soil to lay the groundwork. My plan includes distinct zones for native plants, a vegetable garden, and a relaxation area. Composting and rainwater harvesting are key components to boost sustainability, while drip irrigation ensures water efficiency.

Choosing drought-tolerant plants like succulents, cacti, and hardy herbs allows me to create a lush garden with minimal water. As the garden takes shape, wildlife is starting to return, with birds and bees finding new homes among the plants.

Though the journey is far from over, each step brings new insights. Join me as I continue to transform this arid yard into a thriving garden. Let's grow together!

I would put a lot more logs in the bottom of the raised bed and then tons of weeds as they are full of minerals and free. I had great success growing potatoes on top of my weeds and veg scraps in a rhubarb forcer pot with hardly any soil. They grew huge. The idea of the rhubarb forcer is that it’s open on the bottom like your beds so the worms can easily get in . When the plants sprout I leave the lid off. The point is, that we need way less soil than we think we do

Thanks heaps for your suggestions. Unfortunately everything here is at a premium, even weed's and logs. I had given some thought to putting a couple of bales of straw in the bottom but even they are difficult to source here. It all keeps life interesting. 😂
