Virta Health

Virta Health

Virta is an online specialty medical clinic that reverses type 2 diabetes safely and sustainably, without the risks, costs, or side effects of medications or surgery.

Drawing on decades of research, including that of our founders and advisors, Virta is driving two major innovations. First, we take a highly individualized approach to metabolic health, focused on carbohydrate intake and nutritional ketosis, to address the underlying biochemistry of diabetes and shift the paradigm from management to reversal. And second, our technology and artificial intelligence platform enables continuous, remote care and ongoing personalization of each patient’s treatment plan, delivered online by Virta physicians and health coaches.

Taken together, this approach enables Virta to deliver the high-engagement, truly personalized care required to reverse type 2 diabetes safely and sustainably in millions of people, each with unique biochemistry, medications, and life circumstances.

After losing 30 pounds following Virta my total and LDL cholesterol increased significantly but my Triglycerides were reduced in half and are perfect. Doctor freaked out and is insisting putting me on Statins. At this point I am refusing after been put on them years ago with bad side effects. I am scheduled for a CT scan with contrast in a month. I will consider my options after this. I had a Calcium Score 5 years ago without contrast and the score was zero.

I don’t understand how anyone in their right mind can believe eating the corporate of animals is healthy for humans . ☠️💩🦠💊🧪 More than 90 percent of animal meat being purchased in markets come from factory farms. Animals like humans carry many diseases. More 75 percent of pharmaceutical drugs are being given to animals being raised for food.

Hey Dr. Phinney, I've read about how ketone levels can drop as we adapt to a keto diet. Initially, they're high but drop as we start using free fatty acids for fuel directly and ketones mainly for the brain. Is this true and do you know of any publications on this? thank you!

**If you have the rash**: Please try eating celery (approx 200 grams a day) and drink diluted fresh lemon juice (ca. 2 tablespoons in a glass of water, 4 times a day). It has worked incredibly well for me (within 24 hours!), and I have tried almost everything until now without success, including; Bile salts, digestive enzymes, electrolytes, frequent showers, cold showers, dandelion root extract, nigella sativa, selsun blue, different vitamins and minerals, omega 3, drinking more water, avoiding high histamine foods, etc.

I think "keto rash" is caused by the competition between ketones and uric acid for excretion by the kidneys. Newcomers (like me) are making abundant ketones long before we are "fat adapted" to burning ketones for fuel. It is well known that uric acid levels are high in the blood of newbies to the keto diet. We begin making ketones within a few days of starting "clean keto" but it may take several weeks (or months) for our bodies to figure out how to efficiently burn the ketones for fuel. In the meanwhile, ketones are piling up in our blood and must be removed by the kidneys if we are to survive. The kidneys must shift from predominately uric acid removal to primarily ketone excretion, leaving excess uric acid in the blood. The high blood uric acid normalizes (even improves) after a few months of keto. Early on, the kidneys must prioritize ketone excretion over uric acid excretion to prevent keto-acidosis, a potentially life threatening condition. In doing so, that high uric acid finds its way into our skin, specifically the sweating apparatus, causing inflammation with its attendant itching. Boosting ketone production with coconut oil & MCT oil exacerbates the problem as more kidney resources are reserved for ketone excretion causing higher & higher blood uric acid, which is being diverted to our backup excretion, sweat glands & ducts. Adding carbs or insulin stops ketosis but that may not be the only way. Eventually, we should "fat adapt" & stop the dominoes from falling but that can take weeks or months of intense itching. Eliminating exogenous sources of ketones, like coconut & MCT oil should help. Allopurinol, used to lower uric acid in gout, may help but requires a prescription and medical supervision. Allowing blood glucose to rise enough to slow down ketone production without stopping it (~70 mg/dL), should allow the kidneys to resume their primary job of removing uric acid from the blood stream, preventing the excess uric acid from entering the sweating apparatus. Symptomatic treatment of "keto rash" is no different from "heat rash", keep cool while lowering the excess ketones without killing ketosis. Producing more ketones than our body can burn is the problem. Having super abundant ketones without the ability to burn them is not beneficial. Thank you for reading this long explanation

I have had no gallbladder for 40 years and also have had Hep C for 40 years with near normal numbers. When I did Keto a few years ago my Cholesterol went from 150 to nearly 400 and my triglycerides doubled in just a year from 75 to 144. I went off Keto for a couple of years and my Cholesterol returned to normal. I have gained significant weight and am borderline diabetic, so I’ve started Keto again, I’m keeping my net carbs below 20gm. What can I do to produce bile so my cholesterol doesn’t go up so high and stay on Keto? Any help would be appreciated! Do you think bile salts would be helpful?

Oh dear Halberg was not reversing diabetes, she would just have you hide from carbohydrates perpetuating the myths and assumptions of 200 years ago. Ignore her. If you have to hide from carbohydrates you are not correcting the problems in your body. Keep in mind that the longest lived most healthy populations on the planet eat almost exclusively carbohydrates and next to no meat, eggs, fish and dairy. She did not understand insulin resistance. Her keto approach will bring you all the standard diabetic outcomes of kidney disease, heart disease, vascular dementia, stroke and cancer.... which sadly Sarah found out first hand. Unfortunately she clearly wasn't that bright as way before the science was understood the literature over the last 100 years showed us that it is oils, fats and animal protein that cause insulin resistance and T2 diabetes. Anyone who really wants to correct the condition of their body should read and listen to Mastering Diabetes by two T1 diabetics and biochemist who actually understand how the body really works.

What does it mean now since I've done a paleo-ketogenic very high fat diet losing weight and my cholesterol ratios are terrible. Does it mean there is a disease process going on? Does it mean my body is clearing fat stored in the liver or heavy metals. What is causing this? How could I have high triglycerides I only have 1 to 3 apples peeled per day that's all the carbs I ever have. I'm always in ketosis according to ketone testing ( blood/keto mojo)

I’ve been taking magnesium for years, then went full time keto last August. I was having lots of cramps, so added potassium, which helped for a bit. I also rub magnesium lotion on my calf muscles after I shower at night. So I added more salt to my diet, and that’s helped greatly too. But one thing that has really helped is stretching my leg muscles, especially after a hard day at work where I’m on my feet all day in work boots, and walking a lot! I think stretching is a component that’s being missed by a lot of people, as adding supplements can only do so much.
