Harry Cliff

I'm a particle physicist at the University of Cambridge working on the LHCb experiment, a huge particle detector buried 100 metres underground at CERN near Geneva. I'm a member of an international team of around 1400 physicists, engineers and computer scientists who are using LHCb to study the basic building blocks of our universe, in search of answers to some of the biggest questions in modern physics.

    K2-18 b is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits an M-type star. Its mass is 8.92 Earths, it takes 32.9 days to complete one orbit of its star, and is 0.1429 AU. Its star is highly unstable. K2-18 b is too close to the star. At mass 8.92 x Earths this is more like a Hot Jupiter. Neptune is four times the diameter of Earth and 17 times the mass. So no life.

    I am so glad that we have finally settled the point that in a gravitational field, antimatter behaves the same way as matter. A very ingenious experiment to create an anti-hydrogen atom. What we now have to figure out is why matter became dominant in a gravitational field and antimatter did not? I trust that there is enough of a hint in this statement to tease out an answer to this most challenging of questions. Cheers. PC

    Interestingly, scientists can always confirm all other elements in the atmosphere with 100% certainty, but when the element is detected, something that could be produced by life, they come up with the famous excuse that the sensor didn't work, we are not completely sure, then they don't want it to exist conspiracy theory that hides from us that there is life in the universe

    i don't like the way you totally ignored the issue of how the quantum fields came about after 4:58. fundamental particles come from energy and quantum field. you go on and on about the energy part and completely ignore the quantum fields part

    That’s a fair point. The honest answer is that we have very little idea why the quantum fields we have in nature exist. We do know that they took their current form when the Higgs field ‘switched on’ during what is known as the electroweak phase transition around 10^-12 seconds after inflation ended, but we do not know why there are 6 quark fields, 6 lepton fields etc. Perhaps there is some deep symmetry principle that determines this - a la grand unified theories - perhaps it is in some sense an accident - a la string theory. Maybe a topic for a future video

    But you are gauging the effect of gravity on tiny particles right?? I know you cannot make antimatter in large quantities?? For a quantum particle gravity is as negligible as to be not applicable!!

    I think that to find the answer you need to precisely define the nature of magnetism itself, not knowing the nature of magnetism creates a huge blind spot it’s like trying to grok an equation without knowing it conceptually, then what your doing is route calculation?? You could try and fit in the current value within the ambit of the standard model, if there is absolutely no way for it to fit in according to the standard model that is when you begin to try tweaking the model itself??

    IF you could build a "bubble" that made anything inside of the "bubble" INVISIBLE to the Highs field, then the bubble and all of its contents should shoot off through the universe at the speed of light, since the "bubble" and its contents would appear to the universe to be a very large masses object, like some kind of giant neutrino. So we could get to Proxima Centauri in 4 years, correct?

    If humankind could reduce Earths gravity, even for a space launch, what benefits we would enjoy. But it appears that even antimatter is vulnerable to gravity, seemingly. Bummer.

    Measuring the magnetic field of the muon must be difficult because of its short lifetime. A tau has an even shorter life time, is it so short that one could NEVER measure its magnetic field? Knowing its magnetic field could presumably be valuable?

    You’re right yes, the short tau lifetime makes measure its magnetic moment extremely challenging (they’re also harder to produce due to their large mass), but there are ways to it. One idea is to use what are called ‘ultra-peripheral collisions’ at the Large Hadron Collider where two protons glance off each other by exchanging photons, which then pair produce taus. We’re actually looking into the feasibility of this at LHCb right now. In principle the tau’s magnetism could be very strongly affected by new forces/particles so it would be fascinating if it could be measured precisely.

    Frankly, I think we're pretty lucky to be on such a puny planet as ours, otherwise it would be extremely difficult to get off of it, what with its much greater gravity. I knida think that would further, maybe enen seriously stunt our growth, so to speak.

    Having two models for the same particle means that the Standard Model is not Fundamental. It is overparameterized, and there is an overparameterized model for the muon that can FINALLY replicate observations. It is just a bad model (the Standard Model), and the paradigm of "fields blah, blah, blah" is not a good paradigm.. never mind "Quantum Froh"...:)of course, if you add Dark Matter "field" then everything is right...:) (I am kidding). It is just idiotic. By the way, one does not need more data to know the model is wrong. If two logically adjacent experiments (a collision experiment and a magnetic susceptibility experiment) where empirical parameters from one model do not allow decent predictions on the other, it is a sign that you don't know anything. They are logically adjacent because they are supposedly sensitive to the same "fields" (everything and Dark Stuff), and thus, if the connections to the underlying "reality" were correct, they would predict reality consistently. Since they don't, the underlying model is wrong.

    Muon is heavier than electron so the spacetime curvature around muon is different, thats why predictions are not correct :)

    Yes you have made a impact on me by your channel and the subject you are highlighted. Since it a heavy electron, we can expect it's e/m ratio is different than electron. Magnet yet have not seen a monopolar degree but it is weird that it's magnetic charter is anamolous . Is it had been studied in those angle too ? What if the more heavy version of electron could have monopolar magnetic character shift. Thank you for giving a view of lattice QCD and it's future .

    Depends how you look at it - they were massless originally but it’s a trivial change to give them mass in the standard model by adding right-handed components of the neutrino fields. Then they can get their mass from the Higgs mechanism in the same way as the other matter particle, without needing altogether new particles or forces.

    My focus after finding papers by Sternglass-Einstein on rotating electron_positron pairs forming a named meson as two counter-rotating pairs from dynamic-property eqa's, papers didn't have those. So, how to form pairs became as 1st condensates of a BigBang a neutrino hitting a hyperviscous charge_fluid entity to spin off quantum pairs, with splash forming other charged particles/entities. Seems to hold up to explaining some things, the energy_of_annihilation should nearly equal the energy lost by the neutrino a basis, decay later a portion of inflation, darkmatter as pairs are neutral externally, those enough to smile about. This is an astronomical recycling process of bangs create a convertible energy from pressure+temps that can be a particle at less of both to labs. Favoring cellular/multiverse with GreatAttractors gobbling each other would be the scene without a process to convert incoming mass to energy away from the Attractor's core before it becomes too massive again. Too intriguing to ignore since getting onto the charge entity of the moment has a finite viscosity & neutrinos for ammo plentiful, the after-impact neutrino may have a named entity would be massive support for the idea the most fun thought.     Our technology now can detect chemical signatures in atmospheres that suggests existence of life. My opinion is when this is found it's a good chance life exists.

    No. These are QFT particle fields that are quantized; not your classical force fields that are smooth. Particles _are_ excitations of fields. Forces are remnants of older theories. If you can't have well defined position, how you're going to define acceleration and force?

    I would expect this is more a demonstration that physics is NOT the same in ALL frames. We are moving through the universe at about 0.1c, which means we are not at rest... but rather that the magnetic field and muons, although relatively within a stationary frame, are not actually in a stationary frame. Or otherwise said that the principle of equivalence that says that it's the rest of the universe that's moving and the experiment is stationary is not actually true. Also these experiments are made in slightly different gravitational gradients, and different latitudes which gives a slightly different speed based on the earths rotation. When they first moved the apparatus to the new site there was a difference immediately found - eventually with enough samples though that disappeared; but then that's time of year since we orbit the sun at about 0.01c, and the earth is spinning at like 0.001c (maybe that's 0.0001c).
