I am almost done with the book and I am enthralled, I can’t put it down. I served over 24 years in the Naval special operations engineering divers, and I was in five combat tours 3M Iraq, and two elsewhere. I can understand the life, the anxiety and the fear, and God bless the chaplains because they hold us together and keep our mind focused and reading this book it takes me back and it is beyond inspirational and I am Catholic so I will see his monuments and chapels and I used to live in Sicily so I would like to get up to Galleta and see his monument in the town Square. I am now retired, but this man has motivated me and invigorated me - Cap was a true man of God - God bless you brother.

I can not help but wonder why such stories are not more broadly told? We hear of SRA and adrenochrome. Daily, evil people work dark forces yet we are told from childhood that there is no such thing as magic. This story makes me sure there are other stories of Wonderworkers untold… the first of this Saint’s mortal wounds was stigmata! I don’t need some human wearing a fish hat and red shoes, sitting in a hall that is inspired by a serpent, on a throne depicting Abbadon and chaos to tell me who is or isn’t a saint!

I found the book "Grunt Padre" when it first came out at a Catholic Bookstore. In February 2018 when one of my brothers visited me in Tucson, I had recently purchased the DVD "Called and Chosen." We watched the excellent docudrama and during one of the interviews of the Marines who were with Fr. Capodanno in that deadly battle, my brother said, "Fred Tanke went to our high school!" We both recalled Fred, after returning from Vietnam in the spring of 1968, visited his high school and so impressed our principal on his transformation to a Marine, that he was asked to talk to the whole school at an assembly the next day. Our school was 7-12, my brother being a senior and myself finishing up 7th grade. Fred graduated in 1966. Little did we know that he was present when Fr. Capodanno was mortally wounded on September 4, 1967. Later that year, in September 2018, my brother and I attended our class reunions. His 50th and my 45th from Glen Ridge HS. We made a point of visiting Fr. Capodanno's grave in the New Brighton section of Staten Island, NY. We almost didn't find it that Sunday morning but for an elderly man who parked in front of us. We didn't realize the cemetery was broken up into different sections throughout a residential neighborhood. I asked if he knew where Fr. Capodanno's grave was. He said he did and that he visited it a couple of times a week. He lead us on a two-minute drive to another section where it stood out among all the other graves with mementos left there. We would never have found the grave on our own. I carry a Marine token with me always and I placed the one I had at his gravestone. It was a great experience to be there. Thank you for bearing a long comment.

Yes, you're correct: it's Roman chant. Our deacon has faculties to assist at both Roman rite and Eastern rite liturgies. He wore vestments proper to his rite, so that's why it may look "mismatched." Our diocese wholeheartedly embraces both Eastern and Western rites as an expression of the "two lungs" of the universal Church, and it's a blessing to share with our Roman Catholic parishioners the rich traditions of the other particular Churches in our faith!
