If I owned a similar boat, i’d swap out whatever was in there for two Mercedes OM606 engines. 3.0 litre inline 6 cylinder diesel, big turbos, big injector pumps, 1000hp.

Because an om606 at that power level will be reliable loaded 100%. Comical.

Back in the 70's and 80's when you needed power and you meant business, 2 stroke Detroit diesel. Actually in commercial ships like the ferries in Seattle the EMD 2 strokes are still competitive motors. Only recently have trains gone to high speed four stroke motors, and as usual they're Cummins. In the end the Cummins must be the best motor because they're the only diesel manufacturer who has been able to keep up. Even Mercedes is using Cummins on their compact and medium trucks now. Ok mercedes gave up to Cummins diesel motors.

This is a great video. Red on the #3, Artie on the #5 and Danny on the #2. Love the kids asking questions because i was the same way with my dad. I love Cass and Whistles. The whistle that runs on #2 now is a Reading 6 replica that i sold to Justin Guy the fireman. I cant tell you how pround it makes me knowing our whistle blows there all the time. Like a dream come true!

I don't think this is from the late 80s, Shay 2 has her original headlight here, which would be replaced by a larger one by the later years of the decade. My gut feeling is that this is from around 1983, when Shay 2 received her diamond stack and started running on coal. Fascinating footage. IIRC, engineer Artie Barkley's grandson now runs Shay 11, and for a while he actually operated her with the whistle Shay 5 had in this video!

I'm guessing the reason the footage cuts just before Whittaker and skips to Artie at Bald Knob is because your camera battery died and you had just enough residual juice to turn it back on for a couple minutes. before it died a final time! I have plenty of Cass videos like this for that reason. lol Thanks for sharing the footage! Its a shame it doesn't still look like that.
