Linux! Open Source! Nerdy Toys!
You're probably here because you ran across one of my training videos. I try really hard to stick to what I know, and teach Linux stuff and technology adjacent stuff. But... sometimes I can't help myself and I post videos about whatever super nerdy thing I'm doing or playing with. But if you like Linux, you might like the other nerdy stuff that occasionally distracts me. You'll only know if you subscribe!
I do lots of others stuff too. I even have a web comic! If you want to see my other stuff, you can find me here:

Thank you for the video, for the record, netplan uses systemd-netword in headeless system (you can for example check with systemctl status systemd-networkd)
Yeah, I'm completely lost with how fast you're going through everything. It seems like you're assuming I know what all this stuff is already which is fine. I just thought this was an introductory course. For reference I'm doing this for my degree but I don't know anything about linux so when you talk about an OS over a kernel and just don't explain what any of that is, I'm gone. I'm sure it's helpful for intermediates already in the field though.
Please solution this problem I have a 9 volt three pin adaptor . In this adaptor current current and go how I fix it,the current isn't stable . First one second come 9 volt and second time come zero volt please help me for about it
I always knew it In Minecraft
I totally agree! I have a large box of power supplies, sorted by voltage range in large ziploc bags. I can't tell you how many times I've gone in there to find specific power supplies.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience on this topic!
I knew most of the commands but I stayed for your enthusiasm and super clear forward explanation, looking forward to dive into your other videos of your channel!
there's more than one way to root the tux
😂😂❤
This is good information. But its a bit broad based. For what im looking for
Not true about polarity always needing a multimeter…A lot of times the wire will have a white on black line or one of the two adjoined wires will be scored to delineate positive and negative. A lot of times I’ve found that if the wires go into the converter, they do not twist or go different directions, so the side of the wire corresponds to the wall prong it lines up with.
do i still need to port forward my HA server though port :8123? Thats where I am having issues.
not all heroes wear capes thank you so much mate
The only example I think of where a write to, but no read permission is allowed would be a log of some kind.
O freaking K. I get it now. Thanks shawn. Awesome as always
One thing that must be known about Linux, is that anything that can be completed on a Terminal can be completed on a Graphics User Interface (GUI).
Windows, turn on WSL, it's a great transition for learning on Windows. You can boot and use several different distros all with it connected to Windows. I run Kali Linux and Ubuntu. Mostly for cyber security aligned stuff and learning about servers. Arch and Mint are quite popular in the user space.
As an electronics hobbyist, theese are in-valuable when I need a quick and dirty way to power up experiments. Theyr'e also good for powering projects. For instance the home made amplified speakers I'm listening to this on are powered of an old laptop adapter!
Fantastic video Shawn!
Your 120 volt a/c to 12 volt a/c adapters are for low voltage garden lights. The reason being is if you run d/c voltage through the underground wires you will cause the wiring to corrode.
Since they kicked Wally out of The Bronco's and did not allow him to play for Australia because he'd beat Reg Gaznier's record, I never watched Rugby League again. He was flying into Training in helicopters 🙄 Teammates should had recognised that is how quickly "get things done people" get things done. "You will not believe this! but Wally has gone in for a try during the break!" When those blokes walked out shouting, "Queenslander!" it was like the Maroon from their Jersey's thundered through the turf of Lang Park and straight up into your own Nuts! These days, it's all quite meaningless. Garry Jack, Ben Ellis, Wayne Pearce, Des Hassler, you would watch the weekend games just to know who'd ya'd be up against in Origin. "Hang on, something went on in the background... Lindner just got flattened by Roach!" "Oh! ya don't do! take your eyes off a Front Rowwer when he's got you linned up." Then! "Goes to Bobby Lindner! Try to Bobby Linder!" I carried a cd copy of "Bring Back the Biff" with me into Western Europe. They stole everything I had. All I wanted to do was visit Meteren to Honour Poppy's WW1 service. Cousin Clem sails a Beer Can raft from Darwin to Singapore to Announce Darwin is back on the map! 😅 and calls it "CanTiki" 😅 Andrew Johns was so funny that I was calling him the next Paul Hogan. I was in Darwin 3 years ago and had to drink water from bottles people threw out their car windows. I thought to myself, "It's pretty decent that they take the effort to replace the cap" I saw a dead Canetoad on the highway, raised my fist, and shouted, "Queenslander!" I must say all my life all Mum would say about death is "It would be a blessed bloody relief" She had plenty to 'complain' about, but just got on with the job.
as they say .. no good deed goes unpunished lol
Passed my linux+ exam with help from your videos. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
thanks shawn for this course you SAVED ME. WGU really dropped the ball with this course. it was really just an unorganized mess and your class was more clear and concise then the Dion course which really doesnt even touch the knowledge required for the test. again thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
Thank you for this feedback. Am in the middle of the Dion L+ course and it was feeling “off” to me.
After taking all CompTIA core certifications, I am now studying for Linux+. I really like Linux, it's so much fun! Great video!
I've been watching (and rewatching) the linux+ videos that you did - which are fabulous by the way. I have a question that's been bugging me and I was going to join tonights live stream to ask - but I was trying to fix a DNS related issue and so missed the stream. Enough waffling.. Who is the guy in the background photo / picture on the wall who appears to be holding a shoe / or has his legs crossed to see the shoe ?. Thanks ... David. (just about to book the comptia exam.).
Sorry I had to leave early, great show as always thanks Shawn
you might be able to use buck converter spliced in if the voltage of the device is lower than the brick or a boost converter spliced in if the device needs more volts note you may need more amps if using boost converter these buck or boost converters are usually configurable so you should use a volt meter to make sure the output is correct for people that have the nes (even though it says you shouldnt) (you can use a dc adapter as well with a range of voltages): kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIilxcRxmM-eiaw.html
i wanna petition for you to teach us all to be linux admins pplleeaasee
if you could just go ahead and walk us through each linux test id appreciate it -- i too am here from WGU their course for linux LPI is terrible
Not sure if you mentioned it or you will later in one of the videos but are the terminal commands (eg. ls, mv, touch, etc.) universal for all the distributions of Linux (eg. Debian, Red Hat, Arch, and/or SUSE) or does it depend on the terminal emulator also? (eg. Gnome Terminal, Konsole, Guake, etc.)
hey, hope you’re doing well. I am struggling on an assignment and was wondering if I could reach out for some help if there was anyway you feel comfortable getting in contact please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.
Mr Powers, I know this video has been around for a while now, but I've been going through some college courses on LInux the CLI. While I've generally advanced past these basic commands, YOUR WAY OF EXPLAINING AND GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMMAND ARE SO MUCH BETTER. Thank you. At the end of your video, you said to throw out some ideas for a different video. Could you at some point create a video on the | (pipe) command? Maybe you already have and i just haven't gotten there yet, but one of the biggest issues I've found is not knowing which commands go together well when using it.
Want to say good morning and thank u for your course. I’m paying for a network + and the instructor is all over the place and I’m getting discouraged thank u for this may you be continue to bless us with your knowledge in a beautiful way
try tldr instead of man, like "tldr ls"
Awesome video, thank you
hey, hope you’re doing well. I am struggling on an assignment and I need some help. If you don’t mind if possible, could we please get in contact for further communication it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I am still very new to LInux. So, there's probably a million different things a person can do to make it easier for them to read, but how in the world did you change the font color? When everything is just black and white, all the different lines run together. I love this color scheme you're using.
planning on taking my exam this Thursday, rewatching some of your videos again... very helpful.. thank you so much man!
Fantastic video!
su to a user only needs the other user's password to gain access to the other user's account. Not the root password (unless you're switching to root obviously). It is mentioned otherwise at the 1:52 mark
Sadly it doesn't show if it works the same way if your primary ip adress is static and how nmcli would alter the config file in this case.
af means as fysically possible
I made the mistake of skipping over octal notation & it was on the exam
If you held your fingers together to make a pretend pistol and then started hoping around like youre a spy in front of a woman then youre a fuc kin assh ole
Hey Shawn, just wanted to take a minute to say thank you. I just passed my 010-160 Linux Foundations exam, and your videos were extremely important for me and helped a lot with my passing score. I really appreciate your passion for linux and for teaching. I can tell you are a great guy and you've helped out so many more people than you realize. Thanks so much for everything. Cheers 🍹
1. screen -rx attaches to a screen session without detaching it. 2. <Ctrl-a |> does a vertical split in screen 3. a tmux style status bar can be added by adding the following to your ~/.screenrc: # status bar, with current window highlighted hardstatus alwayslastline hardstatus string '%{= kw}%-w%{+b yk} %n*%t%?(%u)%? %{-}%+w %=%{g}' # make screen load a proper shell, which includes .screenrc shell -$SHELL
