    Is a serpentine the same as a timing belt

  • @andrewr7585
    @andrewr75856 ай бұрын

    No they're different. Serpentine/drive belt runs the alternator, power steering, etc. Timing belt keeps the engine internals in sync with each other. Also, the Mazda 3 has an internal timing chain, not a timing belt.

    Great Video! Rag trick is great, most people just cut the old one off, but if you want to keep it "just in case" this is the way to go. It also is good for getting the new belt on. For me, I was not able to get any kind of socket onto the tension cast nut due to clearance, but a 17mm wrench from the bottom worked, and I zip tied it to the axle while I did the belt. Hope this helps anybody else with tight clearance!

Thanks andrew R

    Fyi for anyone doing this, try your best to get an oem belt, it runs the engine you dont want to mess with the fit. Also on mazda 2.0l (probably 2.5l too but i dont have that) its recomended to replace the belts every 60k-70k miles at most to ensure the engine stays running good

    This is why my Jeep YJ was quickly changed from BFG ATs to MTs. ATs just don't cut it in mud. Unsiped mudders suck on slick pavement though. Sipe those 2xx/75R15 BFG or Geolandar MTs if you can't fit something like a 31" Trxus MT.

    Thank you. My recommendation: Turn the wheel all the way to the right before jacking up the car. That'll give you more working room. For the tensioner, put the closed end of a 17mm wrench on the nut and then hook another larger wrench onto the other end to give leverage I laid under the car to get the water pump belt on/off. Don't try to put the belt onto the guides of the water pump first. Put it in place on the crank pulley then work it onto the outside of the water pump pulley. Then go back and get it back in place on the crank if it slipped out of place. I found it much easier to start the belt onto the top of the water pump pulley. Takes a good amount of force to turn the belt onto the pulley The serpentine I got from above and the front of the car with my right hand pushing the belt tensioner and my left keeping the belt tight on the crank, ac compressor, and alternator. Seems more awkward but i struggled with visibility trying to work from the side of the car with my hands doing the other job. The belt is gonna come all kinked up and all it's gonna want to do is fly off if you give any slack

    I have a 2012 Mazda 3 sky active grand touring 5 door. The original bill had 138,000 miles on it. This was the perfect video for this car. The only problem I had was installing the serpentine belt since I was doing it by myself. I ended up using zip ties to attach the belt to the crank pulley and then basically everything went fine.
