I loved Crossroads as a child, after school, we mocked it and then even better we saw Victoria Wood’s version in Acorn Antiques! I am sure you are loving your life in the hereafter, wishing you could send us a script on it!

While Acorn Antiques was largely based on Crossroads, Victoria Wood said she also drew inspiration from a lot of other awful programmes that were on in the 70s and 80s. The name of Mrs Overall was a play on Mrs Mac, a character in the Scottish soap "Take the Highroad". Victoria also said she based a lot of the dialogue on a radio soap called "Waggoner's Walk". Victoria said everyone seemed to speak to each other "in block capitals" in it, the lines were so clunky. Finally, she also took inspiration from a 1970s ITV series called "The Cedar Tree". It was similarly low budget and one of the actresses regularly forgot her lines while the others had to improvise around her. Because the budget was so tight, they would just keep on filming and not edit out the mistakes - much like Crossroads.

I love the deliberately janky acting and wobbly sets/graphics. Getting the production to look cheap on purpose was a genius idea, including deliberate errors.

Julie Walters is so hilarious and her West Bromwich/ Birmingham accent makes it even funnier! Those closing credits are such a good send up of Crossroads!
