Missouri Crooked Barn Homestead
Missouri Crooked Barn Homestead
Come join us on our new homestead as we build, rebuild, and create the sustainable lifestyle we were meant to be living. There are gardens to create, fences to mend and rebuild, a barn to fix, and so much more as we make this journey a reality. We are a May December multi-generational household on 7 acres in Milan, Missouri.

Is this open pollinated
Debbie It’s looking good up there,,, Yep with the hay done first cutting, we are back at the garden picking and processing. Y’all ain’t too far behind, and y’all are working so hard it’s showing.
Thank you. I've been fearing that we were way behind, but I'm still planting. Plus, I'm starting seeds for Fall crops pretty soon. We are working our tails off.
Bring a parasol to make some shade for poor Plunger. 😊
I would have to take a few parasol's to make some shade for Plunger, but he does have shade down in the pasture under the trees and also in the barn. Surprisingly, in the barn is the coolest.
Gardens looking great
Thank you! Working hard on it.
Yeah ! Plunger the hero ! He may be a father soon.
I am hoping so.
Plunger is awesome ! Make more videos about him when you have time.
I am going to try to. He goes into the pasture sometimes and lays under the trees.
Debbie Yep starting to look a little more farmy. Y’all are working so hard, it’s looking good.
Thank you. We just picked up another 16 Barred Rock chicks yesterday evening. 50% off at our local Tractor Supply.
Greetings from Louisiana
Hello there!
Debbie!!! Wow y’all have been working so hard. Good to see the gardens going in. We are about done with hay here, and it’s been a great year for hay. We are getting geared towards canning and garden processing now. Y’all are looking good up there, and good to hear about your Wyoming home as well. Once all the hard work is done it’s a lot easier to maintain, but it’s looking amazing
Thank you and yes, you're right, once it is in, it's easier to maintain it. I'm trying to not let it get overwhelming, but I think we left overwhelming months ago. LOL.
Please please dont store jars with the bands on 😩
I have stored mine both with and without bands on and never had any issues whatsoever in over 30 years of canning. My Mother and Grandmother always left their bands on as well for many years prior to that. Thank you for the suggestion.
Howdy! Nice to see a fellow Missourian. How's the garden coming for ya?
Exploding! Pretty much everything I have planted has been up within a few days. Corn and beans were up in 4 days. Potatoes up in 5 days. Rutabaga, Collards, and Beets were quite actually up overnight. My tomatoes have already adjusted and growth is happening within a few days. Same with the peppers. However, I've had a little issue with a pocket gopher. It snatched a couple of cantaloupe plants, but I think it moved on. So, I replanted. My squash were up within 3 days. It's crazy the amount of germination speed here. It would take sometimes 21 days for corn and beans to come up in Cheyenne.
Debbie That’s a good setup ya’ll have now. Yep we learned about pigs if your pen won’t hold water it’s not gonna hold pigs, (kinda like beagles). Ha. But no looking like y’all are getting it setup good. We like it.
Thank you! We had a surprise this morning that I will be making a video about very soon. Hint: It involves an entire farm.
I got this Wilbilt bread machine from Goodwill. I want to use the dough cycle only. Have you tried the dough cycle only?
Yes, I have. It works great. I give it a little extra kneading after the dough cycle and then just bake it as I would if I were not using the machine.
@@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead I’ve used it on dough cycle, it’s great!
@@gracechen7615 That is awesome!!! I knew it would be.
@@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead I want to try using the dough cycle fully where I will take the dough out just for the final shaping but I’m unclear how this would turn out or how long it will take.
Can you make cannabis infused bread?
Debbie the garden looks great. Yes always good to get ahead of it. We are new subscribers we’re going to look back and get caught up with your journey. We are in southern Missouri but compared to Wyoming we ain’t that far
Thank you for subscribing! That would be awesome if you check out the prior videos. It has been a change moving from Cheyenne WY to Missouri, but we LOVE it.
Yes Ma’am. I bet it is a change. We look forward to catching up with y’all’s journey. If your ever in SW Missouri stop in and say howdy.
Hi Debbie. Looks good. Yes we here are a ton different than Wyoming. We are in southern Missouri. Looks great
Thank you for the compliment. We nearly came to Southern Missouri after seeing Living Traditions Homestead. We looked at the property they had up for sell. Somehow we ended up here in Milan, Missouri.
Hello Debbie, love the new place.
Thank you Sandi. I need to update my address with you. We have been exhausted every day from doing everything we're doing creating this homestead. Creating fences is a whole new one for me! Wow, your hair is growing so fast again!
@@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead please do!!! and I am so excited for you and this new adventure.
Im getting ready to build my strawberry tower
I had a strawberry tower, just be careful using these "garden towers", the strawberries sometimes just won't overwinter in them. They get colder than in ground or in a converted kiddie pool.
Wow that's exciting!! I love the use of the baby pool. I was wondering what I'd do with mine when the babies out grow it and now I know!
I LOVE converting kiddie pools. So much space, they get warmer, faster, and they stay warmer longer so they extend your season slightly.
Love the view and all the space you have. Happy gardening 🌞
Me too! The view is absolutely the best we've ever had. Happy gardening to you as well.
One step at a time
That's what I keep saying, but I also remember we're already behind for the new gardening season in Missouri.
@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead life is a challenge you push forward. Remember your always chasing the the sun you lose it at night but it comes back in the morning.
Love your set up! Randomly had your video pop up on my feed. I am sure you guys have considered electric poly for Plunger. Could prob run a very hot set up to deter him from tearing up barn. Although our agh pigs are a lot smaller the electric net works for them. We keep them on pasture but are getting ready to move them to the woods. I know Sheraton Park farms channel runs duroc on pasture and have had success with single strand electric. Cheers!!
Thank you for the tip. He has broken out twice now. We have found out that he wanders about a bit and then comes home for his evening food. Now he hasn't tried it again. I guess he just needed to get used to the place.
Congratulations on the change
Thank you! We are LOVING it.
Save the seeds
Always!
Needs a net
Turned out I didn't need one.
Going to miss the expertise on Wyoming gardening. The new homestead looks outstanding. Looking forward to following the crooked barn homestead.
There are things that I will miss about Cheyenne WY and there will always be the 9 years of growing experience that I have there. Everything I attempted there I found a way to make it work. There will be a lot of footage of the new homestead. We may be a little slower than some of the bigger homesteading channels, but there will be progress.
Spoiler alert: We chose this property and we're currently here. There are new animals that have joined the homestead. Sorry that it took so long to get a video out, but it took us more than a month to get everything ready to move and then move. Everything is so green now and we've weathered through a couple of storms that had inches of rain with them. Make sure to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to see more videos as they come out. There's so much coming up with this new homestead.
That house is so pretty! The land looks great too!❤
Ball and Kerr are the same company.
That's good to know. Looks like they blanket a few different brands. Anchor Hocking is completely separate, however, and I've started using a lot of their jars.
Thanks for the review thinking to get one and wanted to make sure it holds up against a zoji or other made in Japan appliances
Glad I could give an honest impression and help along a decision.
You're moving to my home state. Perhaps I will move to Wyoming since I don't really care for the Midwest.
It is really windy in Cheyenne which is more damaging on plants than anything else, in my opinion. There is a lot of Wyoming that is being purchased by folks like Bill Gates. Rare Earth minerals have been discovered in the mines near Gillette which can cause complications to obtaining property there. I'm glad we did not end up in that area now. Basin, Wyoming is one of the most fertile growing areas with warmer soil temperatures and far less wind. The land there can be really expensive. It takes a lot of research on the wind corridor, etc.
Wyoming is someplace I wish to live. Along with Montana, Utah, and Colorado.
Enjoyed the update
Going good
Goodluck with the move to missourie!
Thank you!
How exciting for your new adventures
We are so excited!
How does this compare to the Baby Bubba okra?
Some call it Baby Bubba Okra and it performed amazingly. I had enough to eat on and also save seed from.
How long does it take? You tell us to plug it on but not how long to leave it cook. How long?
I put it on for the full 120 minutes cycle.
Where are you from originally? Good luck on your move!
I am originally from East Tennessee, a place called Roan Mountain. I spent a few years in North Carolina after marriage. When that ended in divorce I moved back to Tennessee, then took a job that moved me to Washington DC. Returned to Tennessee and then moved to Cheyenne WY in 2015.
@@MissouriCrookedBarnHomestead Wow! I watch channels from east Tennessee. That was quite a change from there to Wyoming! I've lived in Wyoming my whole life. I wish you all the best! Your new place sounds wonderful! 😁
We will look forward to seeing videos of your new home. Congratulations!
Thank you. New videos will be a little slow, we have a short amount of time to get everything moved.
Cool if you ever find yourself here in Louisiana let me know
WOW, so exciting.
My husband and I (born and raised) lived in Southwest Missouri until 1993 when we moved to CO. Were there for 21plus years, then Montana and 2020 moved to Cheyenne. Very challenging with trying to grow veggies, plants, trees etc. here. I see the post from our FB friends back in MO with the beautiful flowers and trees blooming and sigh. LOL! Hope you find what you are looking for and give me a shout out when you get there. We know MO pretty well. Watch out for deer!
Thank you for sharing your story. We are still on the search, but it is so gorgeous here.
Nice!
We are thinking about moving to Missouri also!!
That is awesome. It is certainly gorgeous here.
Nice update
Thanks
Looking good! Wish I had the space and windows.
Nice eggs
Many many thanks

this machine is amazing for turkey, wings, and salmon or baby back ribs....if you marinate the meat as you like for 4 to hours before hand and baste the meat every 20 minutes! amazing!!!
Thanks for the tips!
