1. epoxy→(transparent/colored/anti-uv/polarized) film: bind to veneer with heat (and maybe pressure?), uniform thickness, no bubbles; can stack a lot of layers with different kinds of film as you wish and then bind again 2. shorter and narrower stripes when binding (easier to get precise), but thicker (or multilayered) the final patterned sheet: the light play with changing viewing angles is what makes it cool, right? 3. stretch veneer when binding 4. glueing 45°: cut layers before 45° and join same side parts from adjacent layers, so the same sheet adjacent parts are joined, making it match more precisely; sand the glued surfaces; use right degree clamp 5. use led light diffuser film, leaving 1/2in between leds and film
Possibly your best piece yet. Be guided by your disasters as they may direct you in new directions. That's my secret. Let the creation flow though you and be not a forced manipulation. I'm nothing without my mistakes.
This is a truly amazing work of art and craftmanship, Ray. I am a mid-level turner and like to try new ideas. I have a couple of questions about the video. At 3:06 of the video you state that each half is glued together in a stack of 3 (I thought this was done earlier in the video. Is there some other gluing going on?) Then you cut the stack of 3 at right angles on the table saw into individual pieces (you make these cuts all the same size. Then how do you get the layers of the plywood to line up between pieces when you glue them together? It seems that the width of the table saw blade would shift the pattern on each piece) I hope these questions are not too foolish, but I would appreciate your advice.
One idea would be to laser out the veneers as rings. That way there's be less internal lathing and less waste (although you'd have to have a plan to use all the middles).

Very clever jig! Nice work- I think it turned out great! I'm working with a 900x900mm bed but I don't have space to feed through since it has to sit in a corner- so it's kind of a trade off. Either way, it's just a 10 watt laser so until I'm up to a 20+ or a CO2 I probably won't utilize the whole area- still nice though. Prettiest place on Earth that I've seen in Person has to be the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The view from Pike's Peak was just plain epic in all directions- I felt like I was drunk after driving up to the top, I think I was focusing on the road, then once I got out I can see for Hundreds of Miles in all directions- kinda messed with my head a bit!

I wonder if it's possible to make a birch ply acoustic guitar? Patterned ply for the top would look amazing! Dunno how you'd do the sides, end/edge grain would look so good but would it be malleable enough? Would make for an interesting watch. Peace.

I love it. I have just started making segmented bowls. I wanted to make one with jigsaw pieces, but could not figure a way to do it. Your project gave me further ideas but I might need to make one like yours to highlight how I might cut in jigsaw pieces.

Thank you for this video! I have been looking for it since I saw your first videos on the open helix corkscrew. This project has fascinated me. Now I see more detail in how you are doing it, and I am more determined to try to reproduce your work. I do have a different idea for the jig. I will provide video for my efforts - win or lose, and give credit to you either way. If I can reproduce it, I figure we both win. You have promoted your new cut, and independent research has proved it to be viable. I have seen many videos on segmented turning, and they fascinate me. But none have created the excitement that your project has for me. I hope that I can share positive results of my efforts, and congratulations to you for educating us all on how to do it. I kinda hate these. I used to love woodturning in school, but it just went away as something that can't be started at home easily. I could have done now 20 years something I liked instead of all the other crap. :D
