    As a mom with a son with autism I think we are all just trying to do our best to help our kids. There’s so much unnecessary judgement from others who don’t understand. Constant research for new problem solving methods. Trying to understand your child better we just want to help them express themselves better and help them not feel trapped in their minds.

    As a former (childhood) member of Mensa who got almost identical scores in performance and verbal IQ subtests and thus does not have a horse in this race, the way I would put it is. Verbal IQ = how intelligent and capable you seem Performance IQ = how intelligent and capable you actually are People with high verbal IQs tend to be 'successful' in jobs where their position is based on how intelligent and correct other people perceive them to be based on their faculty with language. For example, a successful lawyer will tend to have a high verbal IQ as their ability to win cases is not based on whether they are actually right, but on whether the jury THINK the lawyer is right. People with high performance IQs tend to be successful in jobs where their position is based on them actually achieving results, separate to the assessment of others. For example, a successful civil engineer will tend to have a high performance IQ as whether that bridge they designed falls down doesn't depend on the opinions of other people, it depends on the laws of nature which don't give a shit how persuasive the engineer is.

    It is not just with kids with autism, but adults too. I am more so looking to understand things like the cause, examples of the thoughts, and how to deal with them. It is my theory that an autism term called pathological demand avoidance might be a link to anger rumination.

    I think that I disagree that autistic people struggle with prosody, I am autistic, and have a synesthetic experience with human voices and body language, and ~can~ understand and communicate with allistic people when I match their prosody patterns, but autistic people just have their own prosody patterns. I think this is the core reason for why autistic and allistic people have trouble communicating with each other, but not to others within their same group. Autistic people tend to hold their voices closer in toward their chest, and allistic people tend to project their voices cleanly outward. In my opinion, this is because allistic people are communicating primarily to communicate with other allistic people who just need the external social data, because that is the information that they need to navigate their social structures. Autistic people hold their voices in toward their chest, which creates “vocal fry,” which reverberates around your head, throat, and chest cavities, and provides more internal information, meant to be used by other autistic people who also have a very internal experience of life, wherein, you need a way to communicate your internal experiences of your interests to fellow autistic people, so that they can identify the autistic specific emotions that you are describing, while often never actually describing your emotions about your special interest out loud.

  • @SolarpunkLeftist
    @SolarpunkLeftist21 күн бұрын

    Oh, and autistic people don’t struggle to emphasize words in their sentences, they tend to emphasize ~different~ words, because of the different ways that autistic people experience the world, and the emphasis may not be within the allistic perception pattern, and so the actual emphasis may be missed, while the emphasis that the allistic person was expecting isn’t present. When that happens(from my own internal experience of when this happens if I miss a cue with allistic speech) the words feel like they are stacking on top of each other in a way that my brain can’t detangle easily, while they keep saying more words, which I also miss the cues for, because I haven’t detangled the original missed cue. When I experience this, I just let go of trying to follow their sentences so I don’t get overstimulated trying to detangle it, and indicate that I need them to restart, and be ready to interrupt them at the point they lost me to ask questions to find out what kind of implied information is in that area, hopefully finding the piece that lets the rest of the sentence decode easier

    Given that autism awareness and acceptance doesn’t really lead to any real accommodations in the real world - I guess if it normalizes and provides more acceptance in society among neurotypicals, then it’s a positive, and we’ll take it. Most of our lives, high-functioning autistics are deemed social pariahs - so, autism awareness and acceptance is surely welcome. I’ll take it.
