    I know little about varnish. Other that it's supposed to protect wood. But does varnish itself not scratch? I have seen scratched varnish plenty of times, but I rarely see scratched wood without varnish?

  • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
    @danthefurniturerepairman94114 күн бұрын

    Varnish is the clear coat that is used to seal the wood. It scratches. If you scratch deep enough you will scratch through the varnish and scratch the wood. Almost all furniture has some form of varnish or wax on it. Hope this helps.

    No we haven't used it on any flooring. I think the poly on the floors may be too tough for the 100 watt machine. There is a new 300 watt machine that may be the answer to the very durable finishes.

    hi dan, thank you, I sanded through the veneer so deeply. I did not realize it was a veneered bench till after the fact.. learning. can I fill in a semi deep spot with the powder? or should I call it a day? rebecca

  • @danthefurniturerepairman9411

    You can fill the deep spot with a putty and sand it to the level of the rest of the piece. Maybe drip some thin instant glue around the veneer edge to keep it in place. Then color it to match. It may take a few tries to get the color correct but look at each failure as a learning experience. In my shop we say 'We succeed by failing' Feel free to email me pics at [email protected] and I will see if I can offer any suggestions.

    I would make some paper tracings and use them to transfer the shape. Slowly build up the moldable to make the shape and sand it smooth after it hardens. Not hard to do, if it looks bad just sand back down a little and go again. You can wet your fingers with water and shape the moldable when it soft like clay. I have a video coming out this week showing touch up coloring that might help. Subscribe and hit the notifications bell to see when it comes out. Best of luck!

    Will this work on damage that happened due to chemicals? A scented diffuser was knocked over on a table and I didn’t realize it, so the oil sat overnight and when I wiped it away, it took the finish with it 😢

  • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
    @danthefurniturerepairman941115 күн бұрын

    Yes it will. You should clen the area well with denatured alcohol then do a few light coats of sealer first to make sure you put some barrier in case there are any chemicals left over that will create reactions. After you have sealed it well then do your color touch ups. Take you time and go with light layers. Best of Luck!

    I'm not sure if this setup is just for the video or not; however, I noticed that you are pointing the laser, while doing the legs, towards a pedestrian walk path. There were even some people on the side walk in the background. It seems like your are concerned about your employees health, but I hope maybe this was just a lapse in judgement about protecting others. As you mentioned, this is a relatively new machine, and it's unclear how far the beam can travel.

    Excellent technique. I use a similar technique when I router off the excess rubber from the install of a 3/8" rubber foot on the bottom of a Djembe. Tge drum is always flared out at the bottom. I have to tilt the drum so it meets the profile of the flush trim router bit. I have several different thicknesses of wood depending on the angle I need.

    Hey Dan, enjoyed your video. I am a newbie in furniture repair. I purchased a old dresser, the kind with wavy drawers. It's beautiful but needs repairs. Also when I took off the old finish the veneer is very orange. Yucky! So my question is am I supposed to add a green stain to the dresser drawers to have a more brown color? I purchased a green stain at Sherwin Williams but its too dark, it turns the veneer dark brown. Can I purchase a lighter green and have the effect that I want. I am looking for a medium brown color. The dresser looks like mahogany to me, but what do I know. LOL. I would appreciate your advice. Thank you

    I use yellow to balance the red out, It may take a couple coats but it is a much lighter result. I tint my clear coats rather than us stain because it allows me to control the saturation and do light applications or you can use toners from mohawk. You just have to be compatible with the clear you are using. Also u can use a transtint or a mixol to tint your clear with a yellow or very thin green.

    I would build the moldable putty up and while it was still soft carve them in and after it hardens fine tune the look with sandpaper. You can also drag ridges in the soft putty with a fork, comb, wire brush Just have to find a similar profile. Hope that helps! I just got a 1917 Singer Trindle machine and table. For the most part it is in pretty good shape, the back side must have gotten pretty wet at some point and it is really warped but all of it is still there and it was screwed on a long time ago with small screws that are old and dark. I have never restored anything with veneer. The top has some warps too, the board that folds out and back over the machine. Like bubbles, and cracked in the bubble but no pieces are missing. The bad part is the underside that sits on the floor, the veneer is pretty much all peeled off. I can put a thin piece under there mainly for reinforcement . I was wondering if I could contact you after I have watched your videos and cleaned it up some to possibly ask you some questions. I really like this machine and I want it for use, I plan on getting this sewing machine functional. I am a 67 year old mom and grandma that likes to quilt, but I would like to repair this myself and I think I can do it. I have not ever subscribed to a KZread person so I didn't know if you can respond to my message or not. Thank you for your repair videos. I am in Texas

    Hey, Dan! Thanks for this video. I thought I had ruined my girlfriends table when I was sanding to prep the wood for finishing. The wood prep I used claims to deter blotching and balance the poly/stain I used on the first coat but the small areas of sand through still haunt me! I intend to move up to 150 grit and hit it again.Can I use spray shellac as a sealer between repair and coats of stain/poly and would moving to a darker finish help? Thanks!

  • @danthefurniturerepairman9411

    Shellac should work well just make sure it's de-waxed shellac. The rule is 'everything sticks to shellac and shellac sticks to everything' The mohawk blendal powders should work with shellac. If you practice you may not need to darken the next coat too hide the damage. Feel free to email pics to me at [email protected] if you need some color advice. Best of luck!

    Very creative solution, I didn't see anything like it anywhere and I've been researching over-sanding solutions for hours. I'm curios, there was a much bigger discoloration blotch to the left of the area you worked on that more closely resembles the consequences of my over-sanding (I was attacking a very stubborn large black water stain) . Are you going to touch paint that as well ?

  • @danthefurniturerepairman9411
    @danthefurniturerepairman94112 ай бұрын

    Hello, Thanks for watching. That area isn't burned through just a lighter area of the piece and the lighting is reflecting off it. But if it was burned through we would use the same technique on it. If you have black stains oxalic acid sometimes works well on removing/reducing them. Good luck with your project and have lots of fun with it.

    It can work with danish oil but you will need to find a tinting agent that is compatible with it and I would mix that with the oil itself and not use sealer or lacquer. Mixol makes tints that mite be compatible practice on a scrap piece and see how it goes.
