I really enjoy your speaking and presentation style, but I was kinda sad this video is half tutorial and very little about the story of Qud. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the details of it, if that's a video you'd like to make.

It's definitely been on my pile of shame for a long time, I figured one day when it got out of 'beta' I'd finally get around to playing it. Looks like I no longer have any excuses :D Great video.

After 250 hrs of dying and refusing to play in storey mode, I finally made it, I died as an Enshrined Sultan, with deeds under my name carved into marble, only to relive again and fight for another day. Just for your information, I'm a true kin welding a set of 4 rifles blasting whatever is in my path. I later got bored and slayed every god in the map and collecting their orbs. Truely fantastic game. 12/10

The Algorithm sent me here, but I was not disappointed. I‘ve watched somebody else ramble about this great game, but I liked your take very much. The intro was really well done, the music was nice, the presentation (heh) was unique(reminded me of Folding Ideas), all in all: very good work. And spoiler free! The other person unfortunately spoiled some of the games mechanics for me, so I‘d say you did a much better job at the introduction than they did. I‘m curious what kind of games you want to showcase, so I‘ll be stay around here :3

I've been always thinking about trying Caves of Qud but I've never been great at roguelikes. Hearing that its got checkpoint systems so you don't get goomba stomped and lose your character sure sounds nice. The lore you relay sure is intriguing enough to buy it and give it a slog. Also nice video production and presentation and style! I'd love to see more videos!

Qud is a great game, though I believe the narrative is unseen by many because meaningful books are few and far between in a sea of randomly generated gibberish books meant to be traded for xp at the stilt, as well as many people finding the main quest less interesting than just wandering the lands and creating their own stories from the encounters and challenges they face. Also, I do NOT reccomend playing on classic, there are many enemies in qud that can and will instantly end your run with no real warning or build up. Esper assassins, tongue tyrants, madpoles, chrome pyramids and more can all be encountered at different points in the game and instantly end your run in a variety of ways, I highly reccomend you play on roleplay as it keeps some risk of losing progress without potentially bricking a character you have 50 hours in because you dared to walk into a new screen in palladium reef and got instagrabbed by a pack of 6 tongue tyrants. Also, really like the production value on this, very swaggy.

At 2:25 you say the game has been in development for 15 years but show the Steam release date which is in 2015, making it 9 years. I'm assuming there's a longer history to it than it's introduction to Steam, or are you perhaps a time traveller?

  • @bench0_

yeah that was something I wish I had clarified in the video... but on the presskit for Caves of Qud they talk about how they had developed the concept of the game back in 2007, it was only in 2015 when it was released in early access on steam! here's the link: www.cavesofqud.com/press-kit/

IMO, this is the best starting character, and character, period: Mutant* Any Class** (Marauder for easy early game via dismembering foes, Apostle for easy mid-late game via brainwashing merchants.) Stats: All stats matter***, so put an even 18 into everything and dump Ego. Ego is a good stat too, but it's a double edged sword that isn't wanted or needed until mid-late game. Must have mutations: Precognition. Lore friendly save scumming. Regeneration. At rank 10, prevents death via decapitation from unpredictable mid to late game threats. Ignore the HP regeneration, it's too slow to be more than a QoL feature. Recommended mutations: Unstable Genome. Grants a random choice between 3 mutations. Nothing will help a new player explore mutations more than picking them at semi-random. Clairvoyance. Lore friendly wallhacks. Recommended defects: Amphibious. Water isn't exactly rare early on if you collect junk and sell it, and there are plenty of ways to get plenty in the mid game. Brittle Bones. +50% damage from the most dangerous and common attacks is pretty rough in the early and mid game, but becomes irrelevant in the late game when your HP starts scaling. * True Kin are better at killing stuff, but in permadeath games not dying is more important. Pick mutant, get savescumming and decapitation immunity, thank me later. **If your class is Apostle, you won't need high Ego because you'll already have the best Ego skills unlocked. Likewise, Marauders don't need high Str. ***In this video Bencho recommends dumping certain stats. With the exception of Ego, ALL stats are absolutely vital. Worse, chargen heavily penalizes raising any stat above 18, so there's no incentive to minmax. STR determines how many weapons, armors, and get-out-of-death-free cards you can carry. Only dump if you don't like loot and have a plan for getting VIbro weapons early. AGI isn't just your melee AND ranged to-hit, it's also your dodge against melee AND bullets. Do not dump, period. CON determines how high your HP scales PER level up. CON is the best wisest stat to invest levelups in. Do not dump, period. INT unlocks the crafting of armor upgrades, weapon upgrades, and get-out-of-death-free cards like grenades and drugs. You can dump this and buy stuff instead, but custom gear is better. WIL turns devastating mental attacks into tickles, and improves the cooldowns on life saving abilities like Sprint. You can dump this if you don't rely on abilities and have a plan for Espers. EGO isn't relevant until the mid to late game, when you start interacting with merchants. By that point you can boost Ego with cooking, gear, and semi-rare enemies, if you know where to look. The only reason to not dump Ego at chargen is if you aren't an Apostle but still want to get the Ego capstone skill eventually. ---------------------------------- Lastly, if you want a 'just for fun' character, nothing beats Chimera mutants. Highly impractical, but very fun.

Love the video. I have been playing qud since before it was on steam. I have only been past golgotha like 6 times. and only once was I ever powerful enough to venture to the far right of the world map and explore ruins. I got a spiral borer after golgotha and used to at a location i knew I could get to z level -10. I found a ton of good loot down there.

I saw that. Caves of Qud actually IS Hobo Simulator. The more you think about it, the truer it seems. For anyone curious, I recommend Sseth's review from a few years ago. It got me into the game, and I've sank over 700 hours into it. Cud has the right mix of care, effort, passion for games and this game itself, and weirdness that it's worth buying for those reasons alone. If you're still on the fence about something in this game, feel free to ask, and you'll get an unfiltered schizoid consciousness stream as a reply.

Hello there, Comrade! Just a tip from another Fellow Gamer (👋): in my extensive experience as a content creator for the past several weeks, you're really missing a huge focal point here: toes. Typically, big-time streamers like us tend to show piggies in our videos. It's a pretty common sensical part of this career, but with a bit of time and toes, I think you're really gonna start seeing your views go up. After all, without our feet, where can we really take our minds? Best of luck!

Regular rpgs started to bore me, I yearned for the feeling I got when I played FO3 when it came out (was quite young don’t judge me too hard). It was mostly the exploration and itemisation that hooked me. Setting was nice of course but the former was what hooked me. A few years ago I played underrail, that game made me feel the good chemicals again. After I finished that… (jk got soft locked out of the ending because the game is a sadistic piece of shit).. I kept looking for the same experience. In the pits of despair I bought starfield, trusting Todd. Uninstalled after 5 hours played. Saw sseths review many years back, found the game intriguing and funny but too obtuse. Back then I didn’t have the patience for the excel spreadsheet experience-graphics. I bit the bullet and bought this game two months ago. The spring molting beta was a god send for me who had no prior experience with the text based menus QuD rocked. I now have 400 hours in this game. From my guessing I have not reached 3/4 of the game yet. Setting, itemization, exploration, OST, visual aesthetics. Everything is 5/5. The game activates my imagination like no other game. Piece of fucking art… I also fucking hate this game sometimes. Love-hate relationship for sure.. god damn fucking chaingun turrets behind corners.. great video, I will stop sending seths review and send this one to people instead.

I must be weird (likely mildly autistic) because I actually think that the original UI was better. Sadly, the original UI got wrecked during the transition to the new UI. Even if you disable the advanced UI options, what you get is only a shadow of what the original UI was. The world is pretty enough to be worth putting up with a bad UI, but I still think it's a shame.

i feel like saying qud having a wall is a little incorrect, it has three walls, the first wall doesn't take much to get over, the second wall is much harder to work out and honestly the last wall probably has most people looking up how to get pass it. someone could probably argue on how many walls there actually are, but the thing is, it doesn't matter how many walls there are, you hit a speed bump and are always forced to slow down whenever you reach a point you haven't before,
