Arthur's knights were supposed to be the best, wisest, and most skilled. It still irks me that only Lancelot had the smarts to bring the best weapon for the job (a mace), getting all of those one hit kills.

Funny, when I saw the movie forty years ago Lancelot was in a Robe with a wood staff. I guess the religious overtones were removed at sometime. Alternative endings.

True observation in film. Lancelot screaming for his King is truly an epic moment in cinema. This is by far the most outstanding in portrayals of not only the Arthurian Legend, but of the Mysteries of Avalon as well. The acting, the casting, the set designs and locations, all top of the tops in thespian mastery. I first saw this while myself and others, were in afternoon detention in high school(1982). I’ve been faithful in viewing ever since.

My favorite movie as a young boy somewhere between 8-12 years old. Released two years before I was born, in the days where film wouldn't be released in the video shop for at least a few years. If I remember correctly, Arthur has received the Holy Grail from Perceval and returned to his senses, knowing he must stop his son Mordred from plunging the realm into darkness forever. In this scene, which lives in my memory, Arthur and his knights are riding out for the final battle which will be Arthur's last, O Fortuna plays gloriously as they ride. The land comes to life ordering itself and blooming in Arthur's passing presence, blossoms fall like confetti symbolizing his marriage to the earth, becoming fruitful as the true king and the land are one once more. In the battle to follow, as the tide of war turns against Arthur and his Knights, enduring the battle in the eerie silence broken by the clash of steel and the war cries of fighting, dying, and injured men, Arthur is pulled from his horse. Vulnerable he alerts his knights by name, responding to his call, they defensively form a circular perimeter of what now seems to be a last stand. Outnumbered, it dawns on them all that they are facing inevitable defeat. At this moment in the din just before the break of morning, with the hair and beard of a wildman the voice and figure of Lancelot appears as the fog of war obscures and surrounds them, he draws a number of the enemy away, the sight of his return and prowess excites and lifts the spirits of the knights of the round table. His return is somehow more meaningful than the battle itself. From the travails of accepting defeat victory is made tangible, hope is alive with single united purpose. If they cannot win, they will at least all die together. The emotion of this moment is empowering, Lancelot has returned from self imposed exile to fight once more alongside Arthur, his friends, brothers and all rolled into one his King. Unwounded by the battle and bearing an unhealed wound of self mortification in the aftermath of victory he dies but not before receiving Arthur's praise and forgiveness. Lancelot gives up the ghost with relief after enquiring of Queen Guinever’s safety and status, which is all confirmed by Arthur, exasperated he expels an elongated final breath and is redeemed in Arthur's arms.

Everyone has commented well - so just adding this - best example of how sluggish and difficult it would have been to fight in heavy plate armour. Saw this movie as a kid - loved it, still have very fond memories of it, great acting, great story.
