What a workout in challenging crowd and weather conditions, Mr. Baton! Despite the brief soaking, the hitch in leaving the parade ground and the disruptive whistler(s), the band came through with resolute stoicism and great shafts of musical sunshine, or so it seemed to me. A great troop this year with excellent music, an outstanding performance by the guardsmen and a reliably good display by the mounted troops. Hugely enjoyable. Hope your camera and lenses survived the downpour. At least it held off until the end, and on a positive note, those overcast skies gave you great saturated colour.

Thanks very much for this, Mr B! You've got lots of very good content in spite of the conditions being far from ideal for filming (or for very much else). I'm glad you got a complete and close-up recording of the Band of the Coldstream Guards playing the brass band march "Punchinello" (starting at about 07:05 ). It was a great shame, although not unexpected, that the weather did its worst for the march back. However, most of it was still there - the only main thing that seemed to be missing was that the mounted Band of the Household Cavalry very understandably didn't play on the way back - so they didn't, for example, play "Cavalry Walk" which would have otherwise been at about 37:30 . I did watch the BBC coverage live, but it didn't start until about 10.30 so didn't really show the early parts of the bands and troops, etc, on their way towards Horse Guards Parade.

Well they do this 3 times in a short period of time so i guess it would have had to have rained at least once during that time. Sods law it would have to be during the main event tho. At least no heat stroke this year with soldiers and bandsmen fainting. Which is a good thing. Raining cats and dogs, with brollies to the fore. Good old british weather and the good old british stiff upper lip to carry on enjoying themselves regardless.

I watched it Live on Sky, Good God Mr B, I hope you had a Sou'wester, Wellington Boots & a Hip Flask with You! You would've done well towing a Whaler to London & could've made a Fortune as a Ferryman. I hope your Shoulder stood up OK, take heart in the fact that when it fully heals you will more than probably have your own Personal Barometer to Warn you of the Presence of inclement Weather! I hope you enjoyed Yourself. I personally did not enjoy the Parade at all, with the possible exception of the 2 New Pieces of Music & the Story that goes with them. I have to Admit & Apologise to the Divisional Director of Music, Lieutenant Colonel S Halliday. In my Ignorance, I accused him of Laziness in Setting the Music for the Neutral Marches from the Standard Change of Guard March Lists, such as Arnhem, Machine Gun Guards etc. I can not Apologise strongly enough or Understand how I could be So Stupid. The March List for this Parade was set in Acknowledgement of The 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings & various other Events Linked to them. I am ashamed. Nothing for it but to look to The Garter Ceremony on Monday 17th June. I'm very pleased to note that HRH Brigitte, The Duchess of Gloucester, is to be a Royal Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. She has been a Stalwart of Support for 50 years, along with her Husband, Prince Richard, The Duke of Gloucester, to the Crown since 1974 when Prince Richard assumed the Title. Congratulations Your Royal Highness, it's very well Deserved. Hope you had a Good journey home Mr B, terrible Weather to be driving in, but I daresay you're used to it, from what I remember from when I lived there, today's Weather is far more indicative of a British Summer than last Years Heat was.

don't be so ashamed. It took me a while to understand the connection, but obviously not knowledgeable about anything. The commentator on Sky gave good insights but even he was stuck with quite awful camera work. The Independent and others just seemed so obsessed with windows, Royal Banner, empty platform and the Queen's foot to show the actual parade.

@@ardeladimwit Hello ardel, I watched Sky for awhile, Their Commentator claimed to be an ex Scots Guard. Some of his Comments were interesting but a Number of them were so inaccurate I find it hard to believe he was involved in anyway with The Household Division. For example, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery don't have a Colour they Ride forward with at the head of their Procession, the Number 1 Gun Serves as their Regimental Colour. Also the Companies of Guardsmen don't Stand in the 'L' Configuration to recall how it Looked at the Battle of Waterloo! They Stand in the 'L' Shape because The British Standing Army, such as it was at the time of the Restoration of Charles ll to the Throne, when they were trained to Form " Hollow Squares", a Swiss Trick for Defending against Cavalry Attacks. The Square was formed by 2 'L' Shaped Formations of Infantrymen when an attack by Enemy Cavalry was Forming. On the Command "Form Squares" the Infantry would Form 2 'L' Shapes, ideally where possible the Long side of the L would be 50 men & the Short side would be 25 Men & there would be at least 3 ranks, preferably more. They would then join together in Squares of 50 men by 50 men & the 3 Ranks would be 1 on their Knees, 1 Standing & the last would be Standing behind & between the Standing Rank. They were set in a Chequer Board Pattern, so each Square was Covered by another Square behind & between, able to cover each other & Pour in devastating fire on the Cavalry Attackers. They were faced with Four Sides of Pikes, Muskets (when everyone had them) & in the Early days of the Hollow Squares, Battle Axes & even some Cross Bows. The Infantry targeted the Horses, disembowelling them if they tried jumping over & Cutting or Stabbing Forelegs if the Cavalry came within Range. In the Centre of the Squares, were Ammunition Boxes, Field Dressing Kits & the Wounded, all men not forming the Squares would be reloading the Muskets & attending to the Wounded. They were definitely used at The Battle of Waterloo, there are many accounts written by Officers on Both Sides of their Effectiveness, but that was towards the End of the Kind of Battlefields where they would be Needed. The Hollow Square Defence started in 1660 because Charles ll had seen them while in Exile in Flanders & bought the Concept back to England when he was restored to the Throne. Ironically, he also bought back a Regiment of Cavalry, made up of Cavaliers & the Sons of Noble Englishmen Loyal to the Crown & King. These were the Kings Body Guards while in Flanders & Charles ll called them his Life Guards. The Descendants of those First Mounted Men to Guard the King's Life, are on Parade in this Video. I find it incredible that any one who served in the Household Division, would not know the Story of the 'L' Shaped Companies, though to be fair, with all the Cuts & cost saving Measures, with now only 6 Companies of Guards as opposed to the much Greater Numbers of Guards who used to Form this Parade, it maybe hard to make the Connection to the Hollow Squares of years gone by.

Bonjour, Bonjourto. The "Doggie" is Seamus & hr is the Regimental Mascot of The Irish Guards, the Regiment who Trooped their Colour on this Parade. He is the only Regimental Mascot in the Whole British Army who is allowed to Lead their Regiment on Parade. Other Mascots may March with their Regiments on occasion, but they must March at the Back of their Regiment. Seamus has been with the Irish Guards since he was a Puppy & has been Well trained & knows the Drill. He is well loved by the Irish Guardsmen & I think Spoilt now & then as well. He is more likely to think all those people accompanying him on his Walk are his Servants rather than to be wondering who they all are.

Hi Delvin! If you don't know already, your intuition earlier this year was bang on about Gareth Chambers. In the BBC1 Birthday Parade broadcast, the commentator, Clare Balding, announced a couple of times that it was his final troop! If he was appointed to the senior post as you thought in July 2021, it would seem to have been only a three-year term, although he was a drum major in the division before that. A big loss for the Household Division, I would think, as his MVO would seem to confirm. By any measure, he's had a fantastic run: led the HHD bands in two troops in which his regiment formed the escort, and in birthday parades that marked the late Queen's platinum jubilee and the first for a King in 70 years, not to mention his big roles in the late Queen's funeral, the present King's coronation, and in sundry diplomatic, regimental, civic and in other national events. Incredible really. Also, according to Balding, it was the last troop for Lt. Col. James Shaw, the Garrison Sergeant Major's boss, so big changes appear to be in the wings for the HHD.

He's been an excellent example of a Guards Division Senior Drum Major! I'll say this, he's definitely one of the most Iconic ones! Up there with Steven Ward. A bit sad my prediction became true this quick, now the question of who will take over?!? Is it someone we know? Or is it someone we've only seen once, or never seen? Whoever it may be has some pretty big shoes to fill, that's for certain! Some big changes in the horizon indeed!

Hello Delvin-Pedia! I was disappointed not to hear "Slattery's Mounted Fut" but Consoled myself with "Paddy McGinty's Goat". I didn't Notice if the Woodwinds were playing on the Return March, I couldn't hear them but that means nothing. A shame the Weather couldn't hold off just a little bit longer. Did you watch the Actual Parade Live as you usually do? I have to admit to Unholy Glee, Major Perseus blotted his Copy Book in the Colonial's Review because he wouldn't Settle in the New Position they had the Mounted Band in. So they bought Major Apollo in his stead & he was even Worse! People tend to treat Horses as Dumb Animals, but all the Trooping the Colour Veteran Horses, knew they weren't where they Normally would be, they take note of landmarks around them & mark the Spot they should be on. So if the Silly 2 legged Creatures move somewhere else, the Horses try to get back to where they know they should be & behave rather Badly if they can't. MOTH & I took bets on whether the Grey the Field Officer in Brigade Waiting was mounted on was going to Bolt with him as it did in the Colonel's Review. It was very Fidgety but he controlled it very well, Well done him! Hugz to you & Yours 🤗 Hope all are well.

@@vickyRoyalHistory Helloooo My Dear Vicky!!! Hope you're keeping well! Slattery's Mounted Fut was played rather quickly, they cut-off half way down the approach road. Specially after they marched off twice, they had to halt at the beginning of the approach road, from what I could tell the King's carriage wasn't ready to roll off. Plus the weather in typical British weather fashion came chucking it down! Good job spotting the difference in sound, the Woodwind section had their instruments under their arms or up their sleeves. So the Massed Bands were almost a Brass Band, if it weren't for the Saxophones and Bassoons. Difficult to hide those up a sleeve! Lol! Yes, I was awake at 4AM to watch it live. Did you hear about SDM Gareth? This was his last Parade as SDM. A bittersweet Troop! I don't blame the horses, it was quite the interesting troop. Lots of new things left, right, and centre! That was the Major General's Horse that bolted off in the Review! His hat also went flying! Good thing it was more calm this time around! The Chief Librarian sends many Huggz to you both! They are Members of the Republican Movement. They never dared to behave like this when Queen Elizabeth ll was alive, the Public wouldn't have Stood for it. There has been Conjecture however since 2021 that when the Queen Died, the Monarchy would Die with her. It's been hotly Debated for Years, especially around the Commonwealth. I myself think that The late Queen was so well loved & respected, there was never anything going to Happen while she was alive. Charles however is a very different sort of Monarch, so the Republican Movement is pushing hard for Change. Those undecided yet, will watch what happens under Charles Reign & then make their Decision, until then The Monarchy is safe.

It doesnt really matter. We are a democracy and they are free to protest peacefully as much as they want. Shame they cannot do it by lobbying politically through the democratic process instead of trying to spoil others enjoyment of occasions like this. And its just going to alienate more people against their cause anyway. So why do it? Just shows the type of characters involved. Extreme political activists are always going to be the most active and vocal in our society. Fortunately for us they are always going to be a tiny minority within it too. The monarchy with all its pomp and circumstance will survive as long as it changes with the times. Which it has and will continue to do so if necessary. Too much ingrained into our history and culture now to just disappear completely, as well as it being one of our biggest tourist attractions and a useful exponent of soft power for the nation abroad.

There is one thing that Puzzles me, The First Band to Arrive was The Band of The Grenadier Guards led by DM Stu Laing, which is Right & Proper as they are the Most Senior Foot Guards Regiment in the Household Division. The Second Band is The Band of the Coldstream Guards, led by ASDM Scott Fitzgerald, fair enough, they're obviously Following the Order of Seniority. However, why is The Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums Marching with The Band of the Coldstream Guards? It has been Pointed out to me quite Forcibly by Multiple People in the Last Month, that Corps of Drums & Pipes & Drums of The Household Division, always March behind their own Regiment's Band. I know that's not Strictly True, but am disinclined to enter into Argument with People who should know far better than I. So why aren't the Grenadier Guards Corps of Drums Marching behind the Band of the Grenadier Guards? Furthermore, the Most Commonly seen Corps of Drums are those of The Welsh Guards & they aren't on Parade! There is also the Point that I was told that last Year's Parade did not have Pipes & Drums because The Trooping Regiment, The Welsh Guards did not have Pipes & Drums, so there were No Pipes & Drums. They did have a Corps of Drums, so all Regiments with a Corps of Drums had them on Parade. I was further told that the Only 2 Regiments without a Corps of Drums, The Scots Guards & The Irish Guards, had Pipes & Drums, if either Regiment was Trooping their Colour, there would only be Pipes & Drums, because they don't have Corps of Drums, no Corps of Drums would be Paraded. Confused? Well so am I! I'm not Stupid enough to think that things don't Change from time to time, but all the Information was repeated to me in the Last Month & some of the People Concerned should know, they are Currently Serving in The Household Division or Family Members. Any Body have any Idea?

Thank you so much for posting this. I live in the USA & love parades. Watched the Coronation Practices in the dark. It is so refreshing to see non- commercialized parades. It's a wonderful celebration. God Save The King!
