Hi Steve, my understanding is that the length of the lens can cause excessive strain (law of the lever) on the camera's mount. I still can't believe this has happened to us and I'm wondering if they have been using a different compound of metal for their mirrorlessless mounts. I never had any issues with EF mounts

I think we need to be honest here and admit that canon have got this wrong. Those backgrounds are exactly what we expected with it being f9. We get better results and smoother backgrounds with sigma 150-600s and Sony 200-600 lenses. I cannot believe Canon have produced a lens that doesn't perform as well as their competition and are charging the most for again compared to their competitors. Canon has now tricked people into thinking a wildlife lens with worse backgrounds worse low light performance and a higher price tag is somehow good ! Canon are going in the wrong direction
@mattkempphotography61106 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. At a time when both of those brands produce lens that reaches 800 mm only then can we make a comparison. For the moment, it’s apples and pears. This is once more, Canon pushing the development boundaries and I think it performs well for that reach. At 600 mm I would hope there would be vast improvements on the Image quality. Time will tell

OFFICIAL UPDATE FROM CANON REPAIRS: Work Completed: Inspected unit and found wear on the (R3) body mount causing the lens to become detached in certain conditions. Dismantled unit (R3) and replaced (BODY MOUNT, LOCKING PINS, SPRINGS/COILS) due to wear and tear factors. Performed flange back adjustment. Reassembled unit and test mount operation. Notes from Canon Tech: We were only able to replicate the reported fault by applying excessive force to the camera body which falls outside normal operating conditions. Please note that force of this nature can impact the operational integrity of the camera body/lens My own conclusion: The good news that there is no fault with the lens itself. I suspected the R3 mount on my camera was the culprit and this has been confirmed today. You can see in my video that I am not applying any great force to release the lens. I don't think that it is the weight of the lens so much that causes excessive force to the mount but more so the length of the lens and the leverage it can have on the mounting system. Thinking back to physics class and the Law of the Lever, I will be careful in future to ensure the lens is handled with extra support when extended to 800mm. I don't think that this will be a widely experienced issue but please be mindful that this can happen. I hope everyone is enjoying this amazing lens as much as I am. I'm happy to have it back in my hands and I look forward to sharing more photos & videos soon. Best wishes from Matt

@mattkempphotography6110 Fantastic images, thanks for sharing. I had my doubts about this lens, but you've pretty much quelched them, though ATM I'm using the R5. I come from the days of shooting action sports professionally with the Manual Focus Canon FD 800mm f/5.6 L with F-1n body + "motor drive" (5fps), and, of course, Analog Film. In those days, any of the major publications would only accept images shot on Kodachrome 64 or Fujichrome Velvia 50 transparency films (we rated the Velvia at 64 ISO and pushed +1 stop in processing)! So, you can imagine that with the combination of being limited to just 64 ISO, a large 800mm super telephoto wide open at f5.6 with its extremely shallow depth of field, MANUAL FOCUS to track BiF and action sports, which all require High Shutter Speeds...Hoffman's Iron Law was against us and you had to be 110% on your game and have Perfect Lighting conditions in order to nail just a single usable image! OH...I also forgot being limited to just 36 frames per roll of film, which meant you could easily miss the best shot(s) between film changes! :/ ...AND, the compounding cost of both film and developing. I remember one year in particular in my itemized Expenses for my tax return I submitted over $36K USD just for raw film, processing, and printing costs, LOL! The usuable high ISO of modern digital cameras + competent "lightweight" zooms such as this Canon are literal game changers...but they also make it a game that's easy enough for ANYONE to play, hence the competition for paying work is exponentially greater. Just for a day, try limiting yourself to 64 ISO, 100% Manual Focus, and Manual Exposure, and see just how far you get! 😜 OH, Turn Off the IBIS and/or lens IS, too, haha.

As soon as you started to talk about how great the bird was... you sold me on how great the lens is. You pulled up a picture and were not drawn to lens errors, making explanations on why it wasn't good, or the conditions, just about the photo and the subject. The equipment should disappear in an image. Sure we buy our gear and we are proud of it (for some reason), but it's the art of the photograph.. and when the gear gets out of the way and lets you make art... you have the right gear for you and that moment.

This is what l have thought about these slow lenses from Canon, on paper they sound like something to steer away from but are actually very useable in real world photography. Canon also appear to be designing their RF lenses to rely heavily on lens correction eg. 10/20mm F4 and post production tools such as denoise eg. 800mm F11. As l have said in the past l applaud Canon for thinking outside the box with their RF lenses, l would by choice take a 200/800 F6.3/9 over a 200/600 F5/6.3 even though it won't pull you through all situations obviously. @davepastern I posted Canon’s official words in the comments. Let me know if you can’t find them and I’ll email them to you. They said that they couldn’t replicate the same issue without excessive force, but you can see in the video that I’m not applying any force at all.
any updates Matt? I wonder if you've been using a vertical camera bag and holding the camera with a long prime focal length attached and that's stressed the lens mount...I'm just concerned cos I have a mark 1 500f4 and a Kenisis L511 vertical bag and do this with my 500f4/R3...
hi Dave, I use a lowepro backpack/bag. The model is pro runner. It is well supported and is not a vertical bag. since the mount has been replaced, I’ve been using the camera and lens combination in the same way that I always have without any further incidents.
@@mattkempphotography6110 thanks mate. Did Canon say the cause or what they at least suspect?
Any resolution on this? I am ready to order one for my R3 but have concerns following your video.
Disregard - found your answer below.
all good. they work well together and be sure to support the lens in a way that doesn't strain the mount. I hope you enjoy the combo :)
excellent video
Hey, thanks! :) I'm glad you enjoyed it
wtf
I had this same issue with an EF100-400L Mk2 on an R5. It would be good to understand why this happens.
What BS from Canon, great wording indicating that you're the gorrilla unscrewing your own lens...

Thanks for the heads up. I have an R5, but I will still be vigilant once I purchase the 200-800mm.
no worries. I think most people are safe. I was surprised that a 2 kg lens could have such an impact on a pro body mount but I’ll be super careful in future. i’ve shot with heaps of heavy prime lenses and my workflow is the same so I’m not sure why this has happened. I’m still waiting for the verdict from Canon and will keep you updated once I know more. in the meantime, I hope you’re enjoying that phenomenal reach and creativity that this lens provides
Will the lens hood from the 100-500 fit onto the 200-800??
Hi @Wellin220365, thanks for your comment. I think they are very different. The 100-500 uses the white Canon ET-83FW III (which is probably felt-lined) and the 200-800mm uses the ET-101 which is 100% plastic
Good to know
I'm gonna go put a Lexus badge on the hood of my Toyota so that I can think I have something nicer than I really do.

Matt, it's simply a lie/human mistake: "it doesn't do it with any other lenses". This is only a mounting problem on your R3.
? I see the word "lie" and wonder where you are going with this. I don't attend every debate that I'm invited to but "It-does-not-do-it-with-any-other-lenses!!!" Canon CPS witnessed this today. Yes, the R3 has the issue and all other lenses hold strong so far. You are strong in your words so feel free to correct Canon for having the same opinion. I could be wrong/a liar ;)
@@mattkempphotography6110 External mouting parts od RF200-800 are different than mounting externals of other RF lenses? I don't think so. This is only a mounting problem on your R3 copy. The current title is misleading people.
No problem with my R 3 / RF 200-800mm combo
Great to hear. I didn’t have an issue either up until a couple of days ago. Good to keep in mind and hopefully you don’t ever experience any issues.
No issue with my R5
Great to hear. My R5 is also performing well
UPDATE: at a glance, after visiting CPS this morning, it appears that my R3's lens mount might be the culprit. We put the 200-800mm on another R3 body and couldn't replicate the problem. Please be careful even if your R3 and 200-800mm mounts aren't problematic. Mine was holding strong up until a few days ago. It hasn't had any knocks or rough treatment. I carry the lens by the tripod foot and I attach a strap to it if I'm going on longer walks so there hasn't been any abnormal strain on the mount. The R3 is a very light body and I'm still surprised that this has occured. I'll keep posting updates as I find out more. Wishing everyone a safe and creative 2024!
curious - have you had a heavy lens mounted on the R3 and carried the camera/lens combo by the camera and not the lens for lengthy periods of time? edit: I somehow missed you saying you carry the lens by the tripod foot, please ignore my reply!
What was the reason for this situation? Is the pin on the camera bayonet loose, does vibration cause it to be pressed in, and the lens is removed? My R3 has a bit of play with almost all lenses.
@@karapuzerkarapuzer1512 Thanks for your comment. The combination is still be assessed by Canon. Nothing is loose and there wasn't any abnormal play within the mount. Nothing rattles or appears apparent. I'm also looking forward to hearing what they conclude because it's still a mystery to me also.
Canon QA is dog shit
Terrifying.😱
It was certainly a big shock. I was right on a cliff edge over the ocean. Could have been a whole lot worse.
I always, always, always run a tether from camera to a long lens regardless of whether I'm using a lens strap, or a camera strap - a separate independent tether between camera and the long lens - always!
For sure, I can understand the security of a tether for a heavy prime but didn't think it would be necessary on a 2kg tube like this one.
Wow that is scary fortunately l not having this issue.
I hadn't had that issue either until a few days ago. Very scary. Looking forward to getting it sorted out.

yes, it's my R3. All good on the R5 and hoping a replacement body mount will get it sorted. Hopefully yours hold strong throughout its days :)
this happen to me on R6 + 28-70
oh no, I hope there wasn't any casualties. What an awesome lens that 28-70 is. It's also quite the chunk of glass. Scary that it can happen because I've always trusted Canon's mount systems to never fail. How did you get yours sorted? I'm thinking Canon will just replace the body mount component.
Repair shop for $600, then traded both in and added cash for R5C and 24-105 f/2.8 didn't bother dealing with canon was 1 week out of warranty, lens hit the floor

I just got this lens yesterday and after seen your video I confirmed that it works as intended with my R3. Thanks for sharing a valuable post for those who might be potentially affected.
@hawkforce3109 Thanks for your comment. I hope you are having a great time with your new lens. It's fantastic and I think this issue is an isolated problem with my R3's lens mount.
Interesting, I thought a mount was made to a certain spec but looks like something isn’t right. Nice catch let’s see it handled properly now
Wow, can confirm. Canon needs to issue a recall.
i’m hoping to speak with CPS sometime today and will post an update. Sorry to hear that you have found the same issue.
@gladoscc I took the R3 and 200-800mm to CPS this morning and at a glance, it seems to be an issue with the R3 mount rather than a lens issue. Hoping a replacement component will be all that's required. Let me know how you get on. I'll keep you updated when I hear more from the tech department
I have tried and tried to reproduce this on my R3, but I am not seeing the issue. Be interested to know how this works out.
Hi Steve, it sounds like your R3 has a tight fit which is great. My R3 seemed to have a minute amount of play which was just enough to dislodge the locking pin. I'm thinking that a replacment lens mount on the body will solve it easy enough. Glad it wasn't the lens. I've been raving about its build quality
@@mattkempphotography6110 That's really strange. I thought tolerances would be much tighter across production. I wonder how many units are affected? I tried it on my R5 as well, but it's tight on that body also. The lens is great. Just different enough from the 100-500 and my primes to justify keeping them all. Canon wins again! ;)
oh wow...I'm gonna email CPS now...
I took mine into CPS this morning and it seems to be an R3 body mount issue. Hoping it is just a replaced component that sorts it out
@@mattkempphotography6110 that does make sense, although it is odd that it only affects the 200-800 and no other lens. It's a really weird situation.

I had to google who he was. 😅 thanks for bringing him to my attention :)
Matt should I buy buy this lens, yes or no? BIF, planes mainly. Thx
To confidently advise you to buy this lens, I would need to do more BIF photos (we had a heat wave here recently so birds have been very docile) Also, may I ask which camera body you’ll be using? Jan Wegener just posted a great youtube video that has some good BIF samples plus his evaluations. I value his opinion and suggest checking him out while i gather more data on flying subjects. if you are on a full frame camera like an R3 or R5 it is a good performer but I would like to do some extra testing before advising you to pull the trigger on a purchase
@@mattkempphotography6110 thx Matt. I’m using R6 (version 1)
Hi Vance, thanks for your comment and thanks for taking the time to check out the video. I totally agree with you. People will look for a review just to find faults in something and then pick it apart. This lens is what it is and I really enjoy using it. it delivers a reach at an affordable level and its main shortcomings seems to be the F9 aperture. Challenges like this only force me to get more creative. I hope 2024 has been going well for you so far.
Matt, what camera were you using at the time these photos were take? Great video. Thanks for the review.
hi Steve, thanks for your comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The images were all taken on a Canon R3. The Canon R6 mk ii would produce similar results
I've had one preordered for two months, any insight on when Canon is shipping to the rest of the gang?
Hi @benhuffer1554, I'm in Sydney, Australia and mine was meant to arrive in early Jan. Surprisingly, it turned up a month early. I have read some horror stories online about Europeans having to wait until April. I'm not privy to shipping info unfortunately but I hope yours arrives soon.
Anyway am enjoying lens which is pretty much glued to my R7.
It is definitely a lens that pairs well with Lightroom's recently added Ai tools. The masking and lens blur features go hand-in-hand will be an important part of the workflow. 800mm is amazing on a full-frame and I'm sure you're loving the extra reach on the R7. cheers!
I order 200-800mm lens to go with R8. I think thats a budget setup.
@@mattkempphotography6110 R8 has same sensor from R6 mark ii. I figure since its at f9, light will be an issue so I went with R8 instead of R7. It was same price.
