Jeff Williams Guitar

Jeff Williams Guitar

Learn to play guitar confidently, whether you are alone on your couch or in front of an audience. Anyone can learn to find their own voice on the guitar, but it helps to have solid guidance along the way. I've made my living in and around the Boston music scene for almost two decades. I've played with tons of bands across virtually every musical style (from reggae to country to funk to classical and so on) and have taught countless students of all ages and skill levels to achieve their musical aspirations, whatever they are.

Taking what I've learned as both a student and a teacher, I've created an approach to learning skills on guitar that provides the structure you need to see forward progress but maintains the flexibility required to allow you to experiment, refine your sound and have fun.

Ok please understand this, no harm intended..back in the 60s when we would close off the block and bring our instruments out into the street and play there was NO SUCH THING AS FONK GUITAR OR FONK CHORDS. we just called it Rhythm so when we would speak to each other we would say..yo bro play that FONK we were talking about the way it made us FEEL. OK now let me explain it this way..when Dr Fonkenstein came down in the Mothership and we said yo man that's that FONK right there WE WERE TALKING ABOUT HOW IT MADE US FEEL !..if we said ..that's them BLUES we were talking about how it made us FEEL ..I remember the white folk would ask us What Is FONK ? and we would say if you can't FEEL IT we can't explain it to you. So please understand someone can have excellent technique with Rhythm guitar be playing their behind off BUT the FONK ain't there because we can't FEEL what they are playing, sounding good and feeling it is 2 totally different things..back in the day if you went into a dance joint to play and those people couldn't feel what you was playing..your whole band would be lucky to get outta there in one piece.

Great video. Extremely helpful since I'm in the middle of working on Bertha. At my level it would be extremely helpful to briefly explain what the thumb is doing. Especially on partial, sus, and more complicated chords. Sometimes I can figure it out using theory to eliminate possibilities. Sometimes not. These finesses - muting and thumb - seem to take the playing to another level. I've experimented, trying to mute the A-string on the C and using my ear. Ironically I found I accidentally muted the high e-string sounding the pure 5-Root-3 triad. But advice from better players is always helpful. Your example of how to work in the sus 4 is a great example. Thanks for your channel. Great resource for learning using Dead tunes.

I've played guitar for decades. And I've adored Bob Weird for decades. I'm ok at the guit-fiddle, but I can't do pinky things very well! My pinky is almost TOO attached to my ring finger on my left hand. I have trouble controlling it and sometimes it just feels like a limp noodle over there Haha. Well, Bobby's stuff gets difficult because of that sometimes. Love him so much though!

How about improvising in F# Major, Mixolydian Scale. With the Flated 7th.The F# Mixolydian is a mode of the B Major Scale. It contains exactly the same notes, but starts on another note. The F# Mixolydian is the same as the F# Major apart from one note, the seventh in the scale. Mixolydian can also be described as a Dominant mode.

What I discovered about Duane and his solo style is this, he would play a lick, then play it again only slightly different. Maybe even 3 times and then resolve it. And move on to another idea, doing this until he built up to a crescendo. Duane would take you on a musical journey this way, building then releasing and building again, traveling another road on this musical trip.

As to playing slide, Duane said think like a harmonica player. All those swooping bends came through in his non-slide playing too.

Nice job. As the isolated guitar on YT shows us, Duane’s part in the verses is much more complex than what’s here. Duane’s Duane, and we’re not.

You’d probably know this. I always wonder during Jack straw during the jam when Jerry fires off a set of notes in a quick flurry and I always wonder what it is exactly. Is he doing legato when he does that? I’m sure you know the part I’m thinking of.what I mean is, I’m sure you know the point in the jam that I’m talking about. Maybe you know how to do it.
