I've never seen Louise Brooks in any film before, what an amazing woman! William Powell and I are well acquainted, however. I've been a fan of his since I was a boy sneaking down to watch the late, late movies with the volume down to nearly nothing. Couldn't wake Mom and Pop without consequences, big ones too. This is great, thank you very much for uploading this!

Hollywood has always hated true beauty that cannot be poisoned. The 'canary" that was killed was more beautiful than all the female stars of her time and then some.

This movie was very well acted especially since it was made in 1929 when movie making was in its youth and there were no rules on how to act well. This movie with Barbara Stanwyck and Zasu Pitts warrants a golden 10 and well worth viewing.

I think this is =, and has always been my favorite of the Phillo Vance movies, because of how measured he is, when others aren't, in listening to Ada. Many want to discount insanity, running in families, but why are there so many depressives, schizophrenics, etc, in the same bloodline, just like thyroid, and heart diseases?

this the movie that convinced me Winona Ryder is the 90s Natalie Wood coz wow do they look similar and given similar roles (teens run amok)

And it's unbelievable that this woman never won an Oscar. No worries, as her films are a legacy that will transcend time.

Either they wanted you to know who did it right off the bat,nor they pushed that angle too hard to throw us off. It almost makes it unfortunate to the plot and satisfaction of watching.

This is practically a word for word remake of an earlier Anne Harding film....which I prefer. In this film the doctor's life has been "cleaned up" and Anne decorates the house. And, she really does fall in love with the man who adopted her son. Romero is over the top in his role. As much as I love Stanwyck, overall I'd take Anne Harding in this role any day! Much less harsh, you can feel her heartache...

The parts of Dory and Raphaelita are fictional and were created to provide roles for Beery and Stanwyck, who were well-established box office stars.

A conservative Republican, Stanwyck opposed the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. She felt that if someone from her disadvantaged background had risen to success, others should be able to prosper without government intervention or assistance.[92] For Stanwyck, "hard work with the prospect of rich reward was the American way." She became an early member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals (MPA) after its founding in 1944. The mission of this group was to "combat ... subversive methods [used in the industry] to undermine and change the American way of life."[93][94] It opposed both communist and fascist influences in Hollywood. She publicly supported the investigations of the House Un-American Activities Committee, and her husband Robert Taylor testified as a friendly witness.[95] Stanwyck supported Thomas E. Dewey in the 1944 and 1948 United States presidential elections.[96][97] - wikipedia

She nails this slow torture on the head. The torment no one understands until it happens to them and it takes us all. Aging is a curse no matter how you try to dress it is with wisdom and experience. To be frail and unable to live life fully is a cruel prison. To be “to old” yet in the mind you are forever young. Even worse would be to fall in love with someone younger. People always assume it’s physically, but that is rarely the case. Worse still to fall in love with a soul whose body is young while yours is expiring. This she truly understands in this performance
