    I do you know if you’re buying a great fragrance by looking at the bottle?

  • @mandfscents
    @mandfscentsАй бұрын

    You honestly can't tell by looking at the bottle but just try to do as much detective work as possible and buy sample sizes to test. Finding good fragrances can be expensive and time consuming. I still have a closet full of fragrances from when I first started out. Never used them.

    I hate to see larger companies swallowing up and absorbing the smaller businesses.... I don't think things end well when this happens. These companies that absorb others tend to lose their ability to be customer oriented and become more dollar oriented... Just my thoughts and opinion.

    Thanks for sharing this. Sooo true , I made a CP that smelled horrible. The fragrance oil was from a very very reputable company ( I won't mention out of respect) that endless smelled amazing in the bottle but once the bars were cut smelled literally like cod liver oil. Horrible! I called the company because it was a very simple cp with simple oils. I am also aware that temperature changes many things. So I advised that they look into why their fragrance oil was behaving like that even in different cp recipes. I also see a difference in soap scents when I use clay. Great info that you shared. ❤ from the soap community 🎉Happy soaping ❤

    I prefer the rustic look,it's what reminds me that this is a beautiful handmade soap that is good for the skin. It's perfect in an imperfect way. Makes it more valuable.

    I've started doing an in-between thing. I rub a glass stirring rod over the edges. It doesn't save time, but it rounds the edges over a little bit without wasting all that soap. I actually prefer the unbeveled corners, though. I guess I just needed "permission" to forgo the edge treatment. I don't want to be the only weirdo who's not finishing the soap. Yours look great, and your decision helps me feel more confident that I can get away with skipping that step. I'm going for it. Thanks for this. It seems like such a small thing, but peer pressure is real!

    On clay - you can go up to 5% of total oils weight with white kaolin but far less with red & green as they can be drying. I unmolded & cut a lilac cold process bar last night made with fragrance oil Vs. essential oil. I used 3% oil weight. It seemed very strong last night but this morning has mellowed already. By end of cure it should be present but subtle in a hot steaming shower. With the price of essential oils doubling & tripling recipe costs I can see I will be using more fragrance oils. Made a mocha bar with real coffee & cocoa butter. No essential oil option there & it still nearly doubled the recipe cost with added coffee & chocolate fragrance.

  • @koogle612
    @koogle612 Жыл бұрын

    There is a lot of great info out there on max safe amounts of essential oils in CP soaps as well as guidance on clay usage. Ex. Red clay can be very drying above a certain % of total oils wt. Im learning a lot about all of this. Additionally Im discovering all of the different temperatures at which essential oils are rendered scentless or greatly diminished. Temp is a biggie. Also as George mentioned, anchoring your top notes (commonly at a higher percentage) for example. 2.5% of oil wt in oj oil anchored with an additional 1% cedar atlas boosts the oj without smelling of cedar. I tried a 2% cedar oil w the oj & could smell it which I wanted & liked. In costing out my recipes I was kinda shocked to find my take on a recipe from Elly's chocolate soap made with coffee was doubled in price by both choc & coffee fragrance oils (I thought a mocha scent might be really nice) still waiting on the choc oil (holiday shipping times...) Since the recipe already has both cocoa butter & real coffee I think a light addition of both scents should be enough 30 grams ea per 1000g total oil wt. So per batch without fragrance oils its about $15.00 to make the soap (10 150g bars) with light oils added its $28.00! & with strong scent over $44.00! Yikes! Granted Im not yet investing in bulk essential oils & fragrances yet but it just shows how pricey these things are. Given the cocoa butter & strong brewed coffee in the recipe I may scale back the fragrances to 1/2 above amounts but wont know till I mix. I really hope to stick w natural colorants vs. synthetics & essential oils vs. fragrance. With judicious shopping around for supply I think you can offer up an organic all natural product that really speaks for itself (& you can feel & smell the quality difference) at a decent price per bar with a little homework. Its just a hobby now but maybe 1 day as a side thing. Having fun exploring it for sure. Great topic.

    You are so right temperature is a HUGE part of it. Some essential oils WILL cause your batter to heat up VERY quickly and crack in the mold. Your cost analysis is super interesting-those costs add up VERY quickly. Most soap makers especially beginners or hobbyers tend to lean more towards fragrance oils due to the extensive and unique scent options, accessibility, and lower cost. Bulk definitely takes you cost down as you stated. Thanks so much for watching and weighing in here in the comments-hope you stick around for more!

    I really wanted to stop beveling. I agree in that’s it’s incredibly time consuming. However, many customers were telling me they like the way the beveled or more smoothed out edges felt in their hands, especially when they twirl the soap around to lather. So I went back to beveling. 😩
