    Oh look! 2nd owner to an ‘05 Dolphin Grey Ultrasport Avant (with the 1.8T/6MT combo too haha) you’ve definitely made a solid decision keeping this. We have an ‘11 e91 328i with the sport package, and I truly enjoy the USP almost every day of the week over the e91. Make a few friends in the community, do some basic wrenching, and in the long term you’ll enjoy both saving thousands of dollars while keeping your Dolphin as good as new. Cheers!

    My biggest complaint about my Z06 is the shift points. Even in track mode it shifts too early. Have to use paddles. Having traveled and lived all over the world, I've developed a patriotism that is now controversial. So it's a no brainer between a German and American.

  • @Joe_Hutchinson

    That’s an interesting observation about the shift points. Especially considering how high the engine can rev. The Z06 is a world class performance car that bows to no other.

    I have experienced the 4S when driving cars I have reviewed and they seem the complement those cars really well. It’s great to feel them on my 911, a car I am very accustomed to. 997.2 versions are awesome. I had a C2S with manual and Fabspeed intake and exhaust and loved it.

    Great to see you Back At It!!!... I'm due for a full tire change and on my 991.1 4S. Have you noticed any difference in "Road Noise" of the Pilots vs the PZero's, hopefully they're quieter. Also, have you considered the Soul Perfomance header and exhaust upgrades? Sound on that NA would probably be Incredible!!

  • @Joe_Hutchinson
    @Joe_Hutchinson15 күн бұрын

    So here is the thing on the road noise. Since I run winter tires through that season, I wasn’t able to do a direct, back to back noise comparison between the 4S and P Zero summer tires. I remember last summer when driving the P Zeroes on the GTS, I remarked to my buddy Milton that the GTS allows more tire roar and road noise into the cabin than his Corvette Z06 (when the Z06 is in comfort mode). So at first, when I drove off with the 4S, I heard more noise than the winter Michelin Alpins. But the GTS allows more tire roar and road noise into the cabin anyway. So this is a long-winded way of saying the tire roar doesn’t seem annoying or particularly louder than what I can recall of the P Zeroes. I also have contemplated an exhaust. I had a Fabspeed intake and exhaust on my 997.2 and really liked it. I guess I need to decide if I am serious about a GT3 or not. After this drive with the 4S tires, I fell back in love with the GTS!

    @@Joe_Hutchinson I LOVE the GTS... I believe it's the Perfect Blend of Power and Agility without being Too Much to Use on a regular basis. I've been contemplating stepping up to the 992 4GTS, but it's hard to give away the "NA Engine Notes". Good Luck with your decision on the GT3!!!

    The 991.1 is a cracking car with one of the best sounding exhausts across the Porsche world. Having had one and then moved to a 992 it was clear that although the 992 is hugely capable and more grown up modern car. It’s very quiet in comparison and you pilot rather than truly drive it at road legal speeds. It’s therefore feels more of a cruiser and more of a GT car than a sports car at road legal speeds. True enjoyment only really comes at silly speeds or on a track where you can really see how far things have moved on, which is a real shame. I then swapped into a 991.2 GT3 which is great - brings back some noise and adds that special feeling to every drive. Believe it or not its also more fun on a public road, not just track use. But tbh the 991.1 S/GTS cars make a far better sound more of the time ( where as the GT3 is all bark high up the rev range and little sound below 4k revs) and the slower pace of the S / GTS models means you get to enjoy wide open throttle and blips for just that bit longer on the road. So be mindful of these aspects when you are thinking about changing. You might miss what you already have…. 👀

    You ask an interesting question - "is it worth $300k?" I see two different perspectives: For some, it will be. You take a $80-90k car, and add 200k+ in upgrades, and .... it may come close (who knows?). This is obviously far more than just enormous brakes and a trick suspension. But, is it worth it? The other aspect says that $300k is about where you'll be with the Porsche track star. Highly refined but brutal track monster. It's highly likely that the Porsche will be built better, have better materials on the inside, and won't likely be misrecognized for your kid's Mustang. $300k is also a starting point for some Ferraris and other brands. But, can you get a factory built race-ready & street legal track car from Ferrari for $300k? Not likely (that's good GT money, but not track money). I've owned a Mustang - many, many years ago. I now own a Porsche. But, I'm getting up there in age, so *I* am not looking for a track star, as I'll likely put it into a fence, and my back won't be able to take that solid suspension. If I was spending that kind of cash, I'd likely go for either a GT-class Ferrari, or a 911 S/T.

  • @Joe_Hutchinson
    @Joe_HutchinsonАй бұрын

    You make excellent points here. I agree, the Porsche is likely built better with better materials inside (the GTD on the stand was locked with black tinted windows so no peek inside). And you are so right, "worth it" is very subjective. As you cite, not everyone is looking for the ultimate track weapon. A GT-class vehicle in this price range will be more user-friendly on the street and still provide thrills. I love the concept of the 911 S/T. That is one of my dream cars. It has the GT3 RS engine, manual transmission and, a street-tuned performance suspension. I still remain impressed that Ford would build a gas-powered halo performance car in this day and age of electrification. A supercharged V8 engine producing 800 hp on a chassis meant for those who love track driving? That is a rare combination from a mainstream auto manufacturer. As a performance car enthusiast, I applaud Ford for even making this product. But you are so right, answering the question, 'is it worth it,' is another matter.
