No evidence the LAPD were anything else but lazy and complacent. They decided it was a burglary, with some cause at the time and left it at that. As regards the length of time that it took. They were supposedly snowed under with live cases, with little time to review dead cases. The LAPD eventually did set up these Cold Cases reviews, which eventually led to her identification.

Honestly, my theory is that he was being chased. First of all, he was working in the nuclear industry in Japan which is always acquainted with either military or special forces. He lost a shoe when he was trying to get in his car. Then he reached her house to get some protection, in a hurry he forgot the car keys in his car. He knocked on the door and upon receiving no response and watching a person approach, he found the pipe the only option and had to squeeze himself in to save his life and then got stuck. For me, it's kind of weird how police didn't ask around about his work since one of his acquaintances actually ended his life a few weeks back? Wouldn't you want to know if the two cases are related? It just doesn't add up
