Amtrak announced it will require nearly all of its 18,000 employees be fully Vaccinated by Nov. 22. Multiple sources are reporting that train crews have now joined the protest started by Air Traffic Controllers and Southwest pilots and employees. Southwest Airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights on Sunday as employees continue to react to the company’s decision to impose vaccine mandates. Earlier, employees learned they would be required to be vaccinated by December 8 or face termination.

Auto train in VA nice but after that not much to see. Tracks lined with trees, traveling at night and often late. It's difficult to sleep because of track conditions. Service and food is good though.

We have no lack of power/ flex alert issues here in kingman. We do have lightning storms that spike the system on a regular basis. Frying electrinic things. Gotta put surge protectors on everything.

It’s kind of interesting to watch this, but I can’t imagine wanting to ride around on a train. Just some thing that’s taking a really long time and you’re kind of trapped not able to off to go another direction if you want not able to stop where you want. And many many times longer than flying in a plane. It’s pretty much on me.

I’ve made two of these mistakes so far 😂 I ended up buying their not so great food and I was at the train hall at like 6:30 because in my mind people are going to be boarding at like 45 minutes before the train leaves lol best believe I will be having my snacks on my way back and I will get there at like 7am lol

love your website - you give amazing tips, tricks and info. I was hoping to take another train but between covid and now knee surgeries, I won't get to travel this year either. I did take the Empire Builder from Vancouver, WA to St Louis, MO. Had my own sleeper so of course can't wait to get on the train again. Monahan Train Station, you say? I've got to check your links 🙂

I kind of disagree on the food aspect especially in Europe. Europe is tiny compared to the U.S. You’re not going to go from Paris to Germany to Austria to Italy in one train. It’s mostly short rides.

I take the NE Regional from my family in Westchester, NY (30 min from NYC) at New Rochelle to avoid Union/ Moynihan to DC, there’s only one attendant. It’s a 4-track station. 2 tracks for Amtrak and 2 tracks for our local commuter Metro North trains. I’m still confused. There’s only one attendant for Amtrak but they tend to stay on the Metro North side when it’s super cold or hot so no one ever knows which side to go to.

10:20 The pricing on the Empire Builder is also weird like the Texas Eagle. The SEA and PDX trains join in Spokane, but depending on which "portion" of the train you are on between Spokane and Chicago, the pricing varies wildly. It makes no sense why it's like that.

I just got back from a trip from Tucson to Lordsburg, NM. Let me tell you, the Amtrak staff made that trip special. Although my return trp to Tucson was cancelled, most likely due to Hurricane Beryl, I want to take a longer trip next time.

As far advance as possible, most of the time a lot cheaper doing it that way especially if doing it in a sleeper since the sleeper pieces once the first sleeper gets book, then next sleeper will be more expensive the the last sleeper on the train will be the most expensive. For coach you do not have to book that early but still maybe. A month earlier.
