Those roof-tops you can see in the first 2 minutes ... We got very pissed one night, so when we came out of Rizzy's (Monday night - drinks 50p) we climbed up the fire escape at the back of Sainsburys and climbed across the roofs as a 'short cut' - except the drop back down at the corner (Swifts ?) was too high so we had to go all the way back. Looking at that pitched roof above what was the co-op - I'm not sure how we made it ... ah, those were the days.
Ingenious how the winding for the motor also served as a step down transformer to power the amplifier.
Was a popular cost saving trick dating back to valve days. Often a tap for filaments on older players. Daz
Oh I love these beautiful old radios. Thanks for the upload.
Will this operate on batteries as well as house current please.?
This one is mains only. Daz
I grew up in Norwich in the Unthank Road area in the 70s and 80s. Really enjoyed seeing how it was.
Could you repair one of these mic I sent it to you
Can receive it every evening here in Denmark but I think it has whooping 5KW today. Must be about 600km or so.
Great video. I have two of these radios. Both working well. If its not broken don't fix it.
Great video, I have not taken my apart, just wondering if the 4 screws from the back is the only one holding the cover on? Also, have you change the battery on this unit? thanks
No I haven't changed the battery as yet. All I can remember is care is needed sliding lid on as not to catch the plumbing, lol. Daz
Ecl82 tat is cool. 😀
Darren, I held such a tape recorder in my hands in 1980 and was dumbfounded by the simplicity of the cassette release/retention mechanism and thus still can't understand how and why it works like that. . This mechanism is clearly visible at 4:40. Could you make a video from the same angle slowly pressing the CASS button a few times? . Thank you very much !
Onya Dazza, look good together
I found your Hitachi WM20 video very helpful. The AR SW7100 is identical, and your video proved it
Did you have the wiring schematics to work from?
Great video! Just got one myself. Wont ff or rewind, but the mechanism inside seems to move freely. Maybe something wrong about the capstans (?). Do you know the size of the rubber belts on this one? And was it just unscrew the voltage switch? I see there are two screws on the switch - one on the top and one on the bottom. Will it make it removable so that I can accsess the cassette mechanism?
1969. The BSR deck mech gives it away. Bsr slightly changed that auto mech in mid 1970 for lighter tracking during engagement of the velocity trip.
Thankyou, so 1969. That makes it similar age to me lol. Daz
@@darrencoe5795 ''Yeah'' were all hopping along now daz, guess that is why we instantly recognise these old relics. I highly enjoy your knowledge as i have the same expertise interest, long story. Please do more if you can find time. Your video detail and talk through is superb, certainly one of the best on here.
Turntable from hell. Cracking job.
Thank you. Autochangers are such a task. Daz
Does it play and record chrome tapes?
The answer was given in the video. Watch again.
Nice job, those decks are tricky to get just right. Cabinet looks nice too.
thanks. I didn't have much hope for the cabinet, but it looks ok now. I varnished the underneath to stop it flaking too. Daz
Wow looks so good your the best super job 😀 Thanks cant wait to play something on it
Yeah it will be good for it to be used after all this time. Your welcome. Daz
Wow, that's a spartan radiogram. Really built on a cost but still a lot of metal and wood. These days it would be all plastic. Great job on the restoration. Really nice to see another video of yours. 👍
Thankyou. I hope to make another video soon. Yes it's really a basic radiogram, but I understand a simple to operate radiogram was called for at the time. It's sturdy built though. At least it's more sustainable than plastic! And of course gives better tone to the speaker. Daz
Thank god ..A Great video that is really interesting Just done a BSR UA 8 The dirt that washed off, i stripped the whole thing and washed the mechanism with warm oxy wash it still needed 2 washes..Thank you for showing this deck never seeen one exactly like it..Strange how it works the record sizes, Still automatic not like the later ones ..Great job Darren Brilliant video as always ..Hope you are keeping well ....
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, I did make it longer than normal this time. It's amazing how much dust and stuff that grease attracts. I must admit the deck isn't one I've seen either but is similar to the BSR in the Ferguson stereo minor with the 10 inch sensor. Hope your keeping well too and I have to look at the ua8 video. I'm quite busy with mother at the moment, but hopefully calm down soon. Daz
Hello Darren ..The video was great . Please keep sending them always like how you make them..I find the old BSR decks are usually straight forward to fix unlike the weird deck fitted to my HMV radiogram .. Mind you they are nothing compaired with some VCR's i have looked at ..Best of luck with your mum And thanks again Colin.
These were cheap but they did the job I have rebuilt lots of these BSR decks and they were made to last I have never had one worn out top video Darren
Thank you. Yes, they are sturdy decks and I think cheap wasn't the same as today's cheap as there is still a lot of metal in the deck. Daz
Wow, that is a real poverty spec radiogram, no FM & mono 🤣 It certainly needed a lot of work, I hope the owner is going to give it regular use!
FM still was a luxury in early 70s, it seems. Rob tells me this was a secondary radiogram for his mother as the main one was too complex to operate. I can understand from my own mother's dislike of menus and multifunction controls. Yes, by fitting a Bluetooth option I hope it gets used more. Daz
Another enjoyable video. Thanks Darren,
Thanks Terry. Film length video this time. Daz
Hi Darren, looks like the original spec from Alba was to produce a radiogram. with the lowest grade components available. The plastic BSR TT was a good start. I must admit it sounded slightly better than I thought it might.
It's a budget gram, but did surprisingly well. The large cabinet helps I guess. Typical germanium and silicon line up of the era often found in big radios like my grundig concert boy. Good to hear from you, Michael. Daz
Well done babes x
Thanks, got there at last with this one x
Good to see you back! 👍
Thank you. I'm going to try and finish some more projects and get the videos up . I've had to spend a lot of time looking after my elderly mother. Daz
Hello, my grandpa just passed me one of these units. What kind of tape would they take and is it easy to come by in the UK? I have never really used a reel to reel machine before.
It uses standard 1/4 inch tape and up to 7 inch reels. You can buy this new and various online market places that will have second hand tape. Some old tape may not be very good and will shred it's particles on the heads, but other tapes hold up well. Daz.
Hi Daz, thanks for you message that really helps! Robin@@darrencoe5795
Damn Lip Smacker
Have lived in Norwich all my life and will never leave here despite all the changes, it's still a great place to live. 😂
Hello! I own the same radio. Tell me, friends, where can I get such a Pioneer 4 ohm 1W speaker? I looked online, it wasn't even on eBay. I will be grateful for the information.
Thank you for the informative! video Absolute beginner here, just got one of these do you know by any chance how i would go about hooking this up to a computer or a phone to play videos on it ? Greetings from germany
You may find this video interesting kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4CllM6JpMLVaKg.htmlsi=KnQxFyXg_NbnmPvn as I look at conversions from HDMI. Daz
Had one of these as a kid as my first record player. It was black with woodgrain. I loved that thing! Happy memories of playing my Mum's old 45s (not very carefully, sorry Mum), and then my own LPs. Very simple with very little to go wrong.
what is the huge building in the back at 1:47 to 1:51?
It's the old Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, demolished now replaced with housing.
Thanks for the video! about to embark on replacing all the lights inside my mom's 202. Not sure I'm ambitious enough to swap for LEDs, although it looks slick. any idea what bulbs the original used? I have the schematic, but it lists a part number that nobody seems to have.
It is AM or FM signal?
I got one for Christmas 🎄 1976
That signal at the bottom of the long wave band is station ddr-h 145.68 khz rtty 50/85 German weather station
Thanks Darren, nice video. I also have an MVT 8000 with exactly the same problem. Great scanner but indeed a little hard to program like you said. I did not take the board out yet but it's clearly the so-called gold cap losing charge instantly. Where did you buy the cap you used and any idea how long it will keep the charge? 73 from PA.
Well done ❤
Thank you for this presentation, its exactly the type I learn from. Even though I'm a vintage radio collector, I find the new technology just as fascinating, especially the way you explained it.
Many thanks. I found it interesting to look inside and I do use it as the DSP keeps the fades to a minimum at night. Daz
Nice one Darren, looked extremely complicated to me, well done.
Thanks, it was an opportunity to see one of the receivers from the peak of monitoring in the late 80s and 90s. Daz
Wish you lived near me 👍
I have a little jasonkit in my my workshop feeding an old pa high z amp.And i must say it is a bit of a fm mono dx munster with a good anntena..Think you for the vid.I thought i was the only one left working with this type of stuff...Cheers...
My Dad had a Ferguson Videostar at this time. He worked in Norwich, Chapelfield. I can agree it was a heavy on the shoukder piece of kit! We were extremely privelged to have a 'video recorder'!
You built it so I'm sure you know, but I thought the white diode visible from the horn would be the mixer diode. The iris from the Gunn cavity appears to be further in. I've been a ham for over 40-years and a couple of times wanted to fiddle with 10ghz but found that the components are scarce as chicken's teeth with prices past the Moon. So, I never did.
I have the same unit, the play was stuck but I got it free. Problem now is the play and fast forward/rewind are slow, sometimes stopping altogether. I can feel that the two spindles that fit into the cassette holes are tighter than normal but I don't know how to remove them for cleaning. I can't find a video that shows things being re greased!!
Hi...I know this is an old video but I was very excited to find your excellent footage of the Chinon movie recorder. Believe it or not I have 7 of these machines...5 of which have different faults. If I had your electrical expertise I might have managed to fix them. I do however have a clear understanding of how Chinon's Sound Synchro system works. I am an avid super 8 fan. As you cannot buy sound super 8 film stock anymore this little system comes into its own and it works very well indeed. You do of course need a suitable cine camera equipped with the necessary synchro socket and the correct cable to connect to the tape recorder. You also need the Chinon projector which also connects to the tape recorder via the din sockets on both devices. Fortunately I was able to find instruction manuals which give clear guidance on bow to set the whole system up once you've shot your film and recorded the synced up sound on the recorder. When the camera is connected with the special cable to the tape recorder and the tape recorder sync switch is set sync the run trigger of the camera starts and stops the tape recorder and the large red light illuminates to inform you that sound is being recorded. I hope you see this post...if you want to know anymore about the system I would be very happy to share my knowledge of how the whole system works...I think its a great sync system if you want to record true lip sync recordings to your super 8 films. Thanks so much for posting your video. Oh you mention the strange the strange record/playback head. This is to accommodate the recoding of a sound track and a sync pulse signal generated by the camera as you run it.
ive just bought this chinon tape recorder, on ebay untested, as the tape deck didnt come with any power cable. nor any instructions! do you have any recommedations on where to find the old 240V power supply it needs? do you know if theres any online manuals @michaelconnor1041, or if you share any of what you do with your set up to learn from?
Keep trying to post a reply to you but KZread refuses to post it...I've emailed you at lousybadgermedia...cheers

Daz, I'm stuck at first base... how do you actually get the chassis out of the box!!? Have unscrewed the two screws either side but alas, she still won't budge - my first attempt - but what obvious move m i missing... great video by the way?
It's a while since mine was apart so memory is poor, but the knobs have to be unscrewed and there're two holes underneath the case to access those lock screws and the wave change knob screw is accessed from the rear. It's unfortunate I didn't show more in the video of taking it apart. Daz
I just bought a Dynatron Elan TP38-39. Some of the Dynatrons have a few hidden gems inside them. You're a wizard Darren. Honestly , you're a wizz at old vintage radios. I appreciate the skill it takes to fix one of these old radios.
Thank you very much for your kind comments. It's a challenge sometimes but we get most of them going to some degree. Daz
I would also like to build a 160 meter transmitter. Do you have a diagram of this transmitter? jack ON1UF (belgium)
