Maggie a Gardener and Maker

Maggie a Gardener and Maker

Before I retired I had to travel extensively for my job in the construction industry, when I bought my former homestead-homebase in 1993 my dream was to sell it when I retired then go traveling for fun. In 2021 I sold my longtime homestead-homebase but instead of traveling I started a new homestead journey renovating an old fixer upper built in 1939 and developing a rural one acre property in northwest Florida. After paying cash for new homestead my first priority was to remain debt free, so I had to choose between homestead without a mortgage or no homebase. I chose to have a homestead first, I feel peace in my heart that my homestead is mine without a mortgage and I do have a small Jayco travel trailer that I may convert to solar and composting toilet. I am enjoying gardening, and DIY house projects, having space to let my dog roam free in my own yard. I need a dependable tow vehicle if I keep my TT, but I'm undecided if I want to do that or build out a rig that I don't have to tow.

    I’m so glad that you’re back. I can see how busy you have been during the past couple of months. Your yard has come together nicely. I haven’t been able to do much this year and still need to finish laying wood chips. I will get the deck painted and animal proofed next spring. I also plan to purchase a few large raised beds. ❤

    Oh my dear gardener friend Que, you have done so much more than me the past couple months in your garden. I have been doing mostly inside projects last few weeks, also I been doing accounting tax work for a client and so my garden and yard has suffered. I still haven't made my keyhole garden that I learned about from you. The horse manure is still on my utility trailer probably rotting the floorboards of the trailer, shame on me. It has been so blast furnace hot outside and feels boiling water humid outside too the past month or so and I have honestly been happier being inside with aircon.

    I gave you a cigarette lighter item that you can put in your car and it sends your voice through your radio speakers. Nothing to do w this post but reminded me of the item that you can be hands free when your phone calls come in or out and not have to hold the phone. Have u done that??

    I put that up someplace, I'll have to look for it. It didn't have instructions of any sort in the box or on the box so I looked online to find instructions but then realized the location of my 12volt outlets (cig lighter plug) in my GMC Terrain are both in such a orientation that I can't plug that into those outlets.

    Oh yeah, books, books, and more books. I kid you not, about 30% of all the boxes you see stacked around throughout the house and porch are books! I know some are so out of date that if I donated them they would end up in the trash bin where I donated them, they wouldn't even recycle the paper, I know that for a fact because I've volunteered at many of the Library and charity shops and that is what they do with books that don't sell. The books on technology that are old are the first to go in trash bin at those places because they don't value old technology. I am a crafter and so even if the books are out of date I keep them because I can always repurpose hardcover books as well as paperback books into some new life for them but mostly I just like to see them on the bookshelf. I had all of them on shelves at my old place before I sold that place and moved up here to this place. Out of date technology books are like history books to me; I think it is a great way to look back on how far technology has come! I have my mama's books too, she loved books. She had different taste in books than me but I still value them because they were mama's and I know someone in the family (like my little sister) will enjoy having many of them. I can even mail by USPS book rate to her. You know it's suppose to be way cheaper than regular but I'm not sure anything is cheap at USPS these days!

    Yes and I did save all those seeds and will be germinating some soon to see what will grow from those seeds. I also found a lot more information since I made this video. I did find a source and I bought seeds from her. I will grow those ones in a different patch away from the ones I grow from y own saved seeds. Okra will cross with each other if they are close to each other when in pollination phase so mine that I saved last from last year may be a cross between others I was growing near that one plant. I will be making more videos this summer on the okra I am planting. The videos will probably be long version, not a short. I made some long version ones on the okra last year too.

    Good luck! I'm impressed - you're doing great! I have no idea why YT recommended your video to me tonight, but I watched & think you're very brave & inspiring to show this glimpse of the journey you are on. Plus I read the full description & it's impressive how much stuff you have already sorted through! I don't have as much stuff to sort through (part mine & part 2 deceased family members) - & I'll be getting rid of a lot of mine by donating - but it is so hard to get myself motivated & stay with it. I'm working on it a little at a time when I can summon up the emotional & physical energy at the same time lol, & I've been picking up steam lately thank God.

    Dang neighbors. Is she old?

  • @Maggie-Gardener-Maker
    @Maggie-Gardener-Maker2 ай бұрын

    She and I were talking over the fence awhile back about this fence falling into my yard and I reminded her that I offered to help her take the fence down and she can take the wood and repurpose it over in her yard farther away, maybe up around her house. I suggested she do like I did on the other side of my house and install the fence boards horizontally and paint them black. It is a stunningly attractive look and would be great backdrop for flowers and climbing roses! She was going on and on about her physical condition and being old. I said I bet I'm older than you! She laughed and said no way. Then she said she is 68 years years old! I laughed and said I win because I am 72 years old. Her mouth literally dropped open. She acted like she didn't believe me. LOL.

    Any steroids

  • @Maggie-Gardener-Maker
    @Maggie-Gardener-Maker2 ай бұрын

    No steroids. Vetprofen is the antiinflamatory. There are many brand names for that NSAID, the generic name is Carprofen. I used that for the girls for years. Additionally when needed is an actual pain medication called Gabapentin. The girls had that and it helps Tango also because just like the girls, his is the nerves from spine affected the legs.

    Sister you need to make a shade New Orleans garden around that tree and put tropical plants, they love moist. Wind chimes, table chairs, alittle music and a breeze or fan hooked up high. Get those free bricks and make a setting area would b awesome. Love and so glad you found some natural fertilizer. Love u

  • @Maggie-Gardener-Maker
    @Maggie-Gardener-Maker2 ай бұрын

    LOL... that fertilizer is the fish emulsion that I mentioned many times over past couple years, I also been using Dr Earth products for many years, they all drive Tango into frenzy smelling, drooling and then he eats the dirt where ever I put it so I have to be careful with it. I have found plants dug up before and him eating the dirt!

  • @Maggie-Gardener-Maker
    @Maggie-Gardener-Maker2 ай бұрын

    I do have long range plans for that area as a shade garden area. It is on the west side of my house, it's just outside the bathroom that's in the house. You may notice the trees are growing beside the old brick shed. You may have seen in other videos the shed roof is leaking and rotted in some portions. I have long range plans for that brick shed too. I think it will compliment a shade garden area adjacent to it, I think I may have mentioned in some videos that I have to remove the roof and joists due to rot. What I really want to do is remove the roof and remove part of the walls and reconfigure the building to make it a garden lounge area. I should make a video telling about my plans but I want to get the travel trailer out of that area because it is in the way to anything I want to do in that area. As usual with all things it seems there are ten other things I have to do first before I can do what I really want to do.
