    I tried playing solo and the Cultist (called Samael in 10th Anniversary edition) destroys me every time? Hardly seems fair that the simulated player acquires/defeats two cards every turn especially at the start of the game

    Despite there being dice in the game, it looks like they're only used to create kind of unique starting points to the game and not influence each round by re-rolling constantly. This, IMHO, makes their random effect minimal enough for it not to be an issue for me. I like contract completion games, like Tides of Time, so this is one I'll keep on my list to look out for. Thanks for sharing.

    My picks are Sentient - sort of a robot optimization game, a bit of set collection and area majority, very mathy but very fun. Space Explorers - basically Splendor with a 1960's space race theme, very very good. Tsukiji - fantastic set collection game with a hint of stock manipulation.

    The ark-work on the box and main board looks great. On the player boards it looks a little less great, but still rather nice, better than many. I may not be a miniatures person, but those monument miniatures look awesome. Even the card-board versions of the monuments look very nice, though I have not too great experience with those plastic holders. Nice looking customer meeples. Nice art-work in the rule book too, but the game seems to be missing play aides. I'm not sure how you might solve the issue with the food tokens on the player board. Perhaps something like in "Cat Lady", where you get proper tokens for each type of food. Then again, it looks like these were intended, so they could be used generically, where each token might represent a different type of food. Numbered token (1 food, 2 food, etc) might seem like it would reduce the issue, but would just shift it to a later point. Engine builders aren't for everyone. You always start out wanting you had more resources and finishing wishing you had more ways to spend said resources. Nature of the beast, I guess. If done right, it can really add, and even make sense in the game. I'd certainly pick it up, if I could find it second hand at a not too high price. Thanks for sharing.

    There are (were) two Martin Wallace games in my collection "Lords of Creation" and "Tyros". The first, "Lords of Creation", in my opinion, is a terribly slow game. It has two phases and you're really stuck with what happened in the first phase. On top of that, there's quite some restrictions on how you can build it up and then there's luck as well. If your opponent just happens to have more luck with dice, just prepare to sit out a long game, where you slowly see yourself fall behind more and more. The second, "Tyros", is an 'ok' game. It has those hobbit sized cards and the board is rather small. But at least it doesn't take up a lot of table space. I kinda liked it, though not enough to be able to convince others to play it with me. A bit like a second choice to many other games that I have. With that, Martin Wallace isn't in my wow!-factor list as a designer, but I may be wrong. This one seems more interesting, but I'm not sure if I can get others to join in. I might play it, if someone I know owns a copy. Thanks for sharing.

    Looks like an easier version of Agricola for kids, and I happen to like that game. It also looks cute in the art-work. I would surely give this one a try, if one of the younger players I know would ask to play it. Not sure if I'd get a copy myself, but I always encourage kids to bring their favorite game anyway. Thanks for sharing.

    "You get a sand-timer, which is nice. We immediately got rid of it, and just use our phone." Can't help but love comments like that. I'd do the same, toss out sand-timers and use my phone. But I can see value in putting them in there, after all, there's got to be at least one, perhaps even two people out there, that are going to play this game, but not have a phone or a watch... Right? Missing pen and paper is fine for me. If the game comes with pre-printed paper, it feels like they're just trying to get you to buy more of that, when you've used it up. Besides, I tend to use a scoring app for tracking scores and items anyway. The components looks cute and nice. The board feels a little like a game of life board and a game of goose board. Not much into this word type of game, but I know people that are, though they prefer it more basic, without a board, just the words. All in all, a nice looking game, but I think I'll give it a passe. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest
    @PaceNest3 ай бұрын

    The box looks good, as does the front of the manual. I don't mind card-board components, but I really don't like having the punch them out myself, as I can guarantee you, at least 20% will not come out properly. If games come with card-board components, they should be delivered as loose components, never punch-outs. That's my thought on them anyway. As for the game-play, tile placement... jay... not. Sorry, not my thing. Looking at the box, and what's inside, I think the box is the most appealing part of the game. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest

    Still feels a lot like Patchwork, with a Pack & Stack (2008 by Bernd Eisenstein) theme theme instead of quilts. I think I'll give it a pass, as I'm not much into tile placing or polynomial placing games, and I purged my copy of Pack & Stack a while ago already, much like any other tile placement and polynomial placement game so far. Thanks for sharing.

    Resetting cards to a predefined order sounds more like a tutorial version of a game, rather than a game itself. If the rules are actually changing during play, it sounds like Flux. If they just slowly add rules and complexity, it's more of a tutorial style 'game'. Either way, doesn't looks like something I'd like to play anyway. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest

    Nice looking rulebook, good looking components, love the art-work on the cards. Not having variable player powers doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I can see why some people would want them. I've played games with and games without, and I've enjoyed both. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest

    Still not a fan of real-time games, but if this were a turn-based one, I'd probably go for it. I do like the way a battle is played out, as well as the art-work. I think it's really neat that they allow played to choose the gender if their characters. When applicable, I think all games should allow that choice. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest
    @PaceNest3 ай бұрын

    Normally, I'm not into real-time games, but it looks like this one might work. Two player would be enough for me though. The theme is looks kind of fun for the play. Not sure if I'd really like it or not, but I might give this one a try, if I see it. Thanks for sharing.

    The art-work on the box and inside the rulebook looks cool and the cards look really nice, but the board... the board feels like they were almost out of budget, compared to the rest. Thanks for sharing.

    I agree. I hate when games do this with box art vs inside the box.

  • @PaceNest
    @PaceNest3 ай бұрын

    Don't worry, you're not the only one that's not drawn in by the theme on this one. It turned me off too. That, and the fact that it's a tile placement game, which aren't generally my thing either. For it's theme, the art-work is acceptable, but not great, another reason it didn't pull me in. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest

    A quick reference on the back of a rule book? No, thanks. Like you, I think a quick reference should be smaller and available for each player, not just one, printed on the back of a bulky rule book. If the game is as forgiving as you say, perhaps it's aimed more at casual players, who don't want to be punished too hard when playing. Not a whole lot of art-work, though the art-work that is there, looks fairly nice. Dice are not really my thing, but their influence isn't too big, it's less of an issue for me, it depends. If what you do and how you prepare your move decide at least say 70% of the outcome, and the dice 30% tops, I generally tend not to dislike it too much. Thanks for sharing.

  • @PaceNest
    @PaceNest3 ай бұрын

    Yeah, totally not my type of game. The artwork looks nice enough for someone to try and make a real game with it. Thanks for sharing.
