  9:50 Although I’m white and certainly not in a place to say I relate to the experiences of black people, this is a parallel I can see with my own experiences. I’m trans, and existing in a society where you’re absolutely not the default is exhausting, mainly because you’re constantly having to explain yourself and justify your own existence to people who are generally hostile to you. Getting into any space where you are considered the default is an immense relief and ultimately gives you an opportunity to talk about your struggles without those who wouldn’t understand interrupting. It’s a powerful thing. Thank you to Akala for this wonderful talk and to the uploader for making this accessible. Solidarity.

  Very interesting discussion. On the point about the LGBT+ Community and the Tories, sadly the vast majority of my LGBT+ friends are Tory voters! I have never understood the Gay mind and being Tory, seeing just how rancidly anti-LGBT+ many on the right are, I just put it down to a case of Stockholm Syndrome. I would never ever vote Tory or support their causes from Brexit to their immigration policies.

  Warning to all African countries! Ethnic-based federation experimenting in Ethiopia caused much damage. The fascist Nazi communist TPLF from the Tigray region experimented with the ideology of the federation which they never understood, the same with communism which they also had difficulties among the Ethiopian people. This social experiment caused ethnic cleansing and apartheid among Africans. The international community eagerly followed the experiments, and some were aware and warned that it would lead to civil war. That's what's happening now.

  Nicole Kidman doesn't need me defending her but I should point out that she is only very distantly related to Sir Sidney Kidman (the person Akala refers to as the fourth biggest landowner in the world) and I severely doubt she has directly received any benefit from land taken from Aboriginal people. I say "directly" because like me and all other white Australians, we have all benefited from land appropriation.

  see explanation at the start. that particular jump was when I was about to have a coughing fit and had to leave the room momentarily...
