We are undeniably in a series of overlapping phase transitions. Generations used to fairly reliably be in 25-year “chunks,” but they’ve accelerated as of late. I wonder if there are any studies that explore the origins and/or motivations of this change in “tempo.”

They are not going to perform real experiments at US airports! There will be no Rocket science at the airports; anything they are selling had better be safe enough for a child to handle; they will also pay $1US dollar each at the airport to get their airport warning paper written by Shelly Freckleton which will go straight to Shelly Freckleton; it will not be $1US dollar per group of people and Shelly Freckleton doesn't care how much they pay for plane fares, Uber rides, taxi and bicycle cabs etc to reach to the airport; even if they show up in a crashed, smoking aircraft, they will still pay the one dollar fee; the airport warning paper cannot prevent airplane crashes for all who not educated, don't know rules, acting in movies, not dressed properly never eat, cannot afford food, hooking a ride Muslim, Christian's, friends family religious or other excuses the fee is still one US dollar!

even though the telephone can send a message just as fast as an email, this doesn’t mean that the internet’s impact on communication is the same as that of the telephone. for instance, social media facilitates much more social interaction than the telephone because it functions much more like a public square than it does sending letters.

the difference between the steam engine and the internet is that while the steam engine led to a more interconnected world, it required people to physically move around, in contrast, the internet can facilitate much more social interaction without requiring people to physically move.

the rate of innovation seems like it won’t be able to keep up in the near future only if you assume that innovation will always come from human brains. but if we develop true artificial intelligence then the rate of innovation will likely always outpace the Malthusian Trap and thus avoid the finite time singularity. i like Prof West but he seems to be making the same mistake that Malthus made.

he states that the infrastructure networks are space filling but this is not the case with online infrastructure. we will likely increase our social interaction in cyberspace which can increase exponentially without significantly taking up more physical space, and therefore our gains from innovation will not be consumed by the need to build more infrastructure.

all of the ideas that he references as old technologies (underground tunneling, rockets, etc) were never optimized. modernization is just as much about optimizing and distributing technologies, as it is about coming up with new ideas. coming up with new ideas is the easy part. moreover, all of the technology of the next 300 years is currently being proposed in sci-fi novels.

Right, ideas are cheap. The fact that there are systems being set up around their execution is what makes it of modern significance.

i think he underestimated the importance of computers. while it’s true that we could carry many of the same functions without computers, but the speed at which computers carry out these functions is really important. to illustrate the importance of speed, take the following analogy: pack animals can carry out all of the functions of a tractor, but we wouldn’t be able to carry the current population on the backs of pack animals.

it's not clear to me that predictability is separate from understanding. i think that machine learning will hit a wall with its predictions without understanding. i think this is why machine learning hit a wall in language learning. transitional probabilities can only take you so far without understanding what the words mean. this is also why it takes millions of examples for machine learning software to learn what a 2 year old learns from one or two examples. understanding what words mean allows humans to understand an idiom they've never heard before, in contrast, machine learning software would be totally lost. i think that the only reason that understanding and predictability seem to be distinct is because humans lack the memory and processing speed to do the calculations that computers use to make predictions.

The deeper question is - are we becoming so reliant on technology that with the absence of it we are lost and can't function as human beings? We need a balance, otherwise if technology was switched off, we couldn't function, which is utterly observed, but true!
