Don't chase trends. Craft a highly readable book that reflects your authentic self. Write what you like to read and be yourself. Make your book discoverable to people who share your beliefs and worldview. Write the best book you can. Write more than one, ideally in a series. Write well and rapidly. Be a pro in all aspects of writing, editing, production values, and marketing. Aim for the highest craftsmanship in writing. Test your final manuscript with beta readers, writers groups. Do everything to get people into your story world. Hold them in there. Keep them turning the pages. Don't break the spell by making factual errors or showing off your literary style. Get a professional book cover. It's a marketing tool. Simple, bold images and fonts. Communicate genre and what the book is about. Marketing = positioning + branding The best marketing is built on things that are unique to, and intrinsically part of, you and your work. Stand out from the crowd (positioning) and have something appealing (branding). Watch Simon Sinek's video, Start With Why. Values, personal identity, emotional bond. Die hard fans have the same world view, belief system, as you. What do I want the world to know about me, in my books? A catchy distinctive concept that represents me and differentiates me from competitors. Define a new sub sub sub category for your books. Put your sub category/distinguishing feature in your biography, product descriptions, letterhead... Go to where people with your interests hang out. Participate, don't hard sell, occasionally mention your books. Find an Amazon sub category that represents your book and has low competition. Set a reasonable price, $2.99 to $4.99. Price the first book in a series $0.99 or free, to suck people into the series. Carefully craft teaser blurbs for promotional materials. Give insufficient but tantalizing information. Establish personal, helpful, relationships with readers via social media. Set up an email list with Mailchimp. Encourage satisfied readers to leave reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Don't ask family or friends. Don't swap reviews with other authors. Utilize Amazon's promotional tools and consider outside advertisements

Great lecture Rob. Very informative. As an aspiring thriller screenwriter I appreciated the film structure breakdown. I was told by a story analyst in Hollywood that I’m writing a slow boil thriller. He thinks based on the type of story that I’m telling that I don’t need to rush the story set up and introduce the main dramatic conflict half way through Act 1 (roughly 17 pages in) on a 30 page first act. I have an Inciting Incident at page 10 but it’s not related to the external conflict. It’s more personal stakes relating to the protagonist’s job. Can slow boil thrillers work in this day and age with attention spans being what they are?

Really great stuff. Only distraction was the single, visible audience member---a seriously bored looking grandpa who yawned frequently or stared off into space or flipped at great length through his notebook rather than pay attention...it was like watching a third grader.

Can you explain it without examples...? Seriously, it gets repetitive and never get to the core of "what makes a thriller"...

Thank you for making and sharing this video. You have uncovered many points that I need to improve on, marketing and branding aspects that I wasn't aware of. Thanks to authors like you who share their knowledge, writers like myself can grow to become much more competitive.

Very nice! I loved all the points, but especially #1. Had a bit of a hard time distinguishing the points after until I heard #8, 9 & 10 were all called out.
