I don't often collect sets from licensed themes, but I have noticed that some of them, like DC and Harry Potter, have become a bit stagnant. As cool as it is to see how the LEGO System has changed with each iteration of the Batmobile or the Great Hall, it would definitely be interesting to see some more obscure stuff brought to light. I remember there was a time around the late 00s when LEGO Star Wars made sets from the Expanded Universe. LEGO Batman also produced unique, non-comic/movie sets around that time as well. I don't think it'll happen, but it would be fascinating to see LEGO make something like Star Wars' Freemaker Adventures for Harry Potter. Also, I am incredibly happy to see that Galidor poster behind you. It's such a weird theme, but I love it for that.

I assume that WB have a big say in what they can produce. If the TV show goes ahead, we will hopefully see more from the books. If the show flops it could cause more trouble however. I wish they had carried on making Fantastic Beasts sets, it would have been so useful for MOCs.

I was initially all for these massive $500 sets with the massive scale of the world, plus I think the theme overall lends itself better to bigger sets, but a $140 set should exist at the VERY LEAST. They could do dioramas if they really wanted to keep the large scale element of the theme without taking up a full line of sets, something they may be trying to avoid. With no congruent/well received Middle Earth media releasing to the public right now, I think the fear is that no one in the general public would be buying LEGO based a movie franchise that came out 20 years ago, but I find it ridiculous if that really is the major setback. The massive rise of LOTR nostalgia akin to the love that the prequel films had online a while ago is being replaced by Lord of the Rings, all the prequel meme accounts are now talking about THIS series. What may be going on that I hate to seriously consider is that they know the fans will either buy it or not, and they want you to spend $500, or to leave wishing you had. I don't like to think of LEGO that way, but the reality is that a lot of companies work that way already and do thrive on that model. Look at Apple selling $1,000+ phones doing gangbusters.

I am a classic castle fan, and thankful the pieces go to pick a brick, but there are lots of parts from LTOR and others that I would like to get but its just feasible to but them aftermarket. So yeah that disparity of IP sets and lego creations is kind of self defeating.... Just charge a pick a brick premium for the heads and torsos... They really do need to come out with smaller sets as the new big one of the black tower will have like 4 regular orcs, which is not going to help anyone make a small army... so it just seems like they are missing out on sales that then turn people to the after market creating higher demand there... but then I think they bought out brick link so may be controlling the market and upselling the pieces there so having a high demand helps its sellers and they still get a piece of each sale.

it's just a thing. if you want the thing to be collectable then you want it to be expensive, or otherwise have exclusivity. if you want it to be accessible then you don't want it to be collectable. regardless it is an organization of plastic. the sets you are describing, cheap and readily available, were existent but in 2011. temporal exclusivity is standard practice in legos business model. for example say instead of wanting lotr sets you wanted original space sets. this is of course a reasonable want to have. but it is not a want that is consistent with the products lego provides customers, one of those being that they have collectivity though sets being available for limited amounts of time. if lego agreed to the want of producing more space sets then they would be doing harm to their customers who have collected those sets. the ship has sailed for temporal exclusivity, so now lego is exercising their license with cost exclusivity.

Completely agree. It's one of the main reasons I collect LEGO alternatives now. Smaller brands make a much wider variety of sets, although anything that LEGO holds the licence for is obviously off limits. Pantasy and CADA have a great track record of working with popular IP, so I try to support them as much as possible. And while I don't personally like knockoffs, I can totally see why someone would buy a knockoff Rivendell set for half the price. We just want to play!
