There's only one rational way to maintain the unity and the recognizability of the Church: a supreme living earthly authority. I admire the historical acumen of Erick, but I'm afraid he gets lost in the myriad of events and theological opinions when the matter is a lot more simple: do we believe in divine providence? Do we believe that the Holy Spirit guides Christ's church? Do we believe that God is powerful enough to do so even through the infidelities and weaknesses of his servants, including the Pope?

Christendom is the rejection of everything in modern politics. Trump waved a rainbow flag in his first run and he is even more in line with the world this time around. At what point do we draw the line? Voting for the lesser of two evils only goes to further advance evil. Trump's pro-choice. He's "converted" the Republican party to a pro-choice party in principle. In other words, the slippery slope has continued its downward slide right on schedule. Why is voting left or right the only solution? Why can't Catholics align with "natural law" Christians/peoples in the nation & form our own party? Ideally, we'd love a new Christendom. As a minimum, we must strive to uphold natural law. Well...it seems to me that we do need to be saved by Christ...I don't think this is a Protestant thing though, because neither of us were asserting that this takes place outside the context of the Church and the Sacraments. But I am weary of the Protestantization of Catholicism that has been occurring since the second Vatican Council. I am a cradle Catholic and I always thought the concept of being saved by Christ very foreign to my Catholic sensibilities . I've read the VII documents and I really don't get what this man is talking about. You can make it into a tedious polemical battle, but only two questions matter: i, Is VII inconsistent with Church teaching as many bishops and theologians, for and against VII, have argued? ii, If it deviates from Church teaching then what are the implications for our salvation? As our Lord has indicated any convoluted discourse concerning a simple question is from the devil; Matt 5:37.

3:34 "Catholic education can be expensive" - the understatement of the century. It roughly equates to paying for university 3 or 4 times over. It's absurd, to the point of being irresponsible even if you can afford it. In what universe is paying for university 3-4x wise management of money? Then the best part, after spending all this money for k-12 catholic tution, then people send their kids into the open arms of student loan usury.
Dom knows more theology than I do. So, I respect him for that, but I hope he'll explain what makes him agree with Dignitatis Humanae. As a traditionalist Catholic, I believe religion should be public. But should a Catholic society let say non-Catholics practice their religions when their rituals might scandalize Catholics or make them doubt Catholiic doctrine?

I just want to affirm your statement that “Religion should be public.” All I can do here is recommend three books (even if you don’t read them it’s good to be aware of them): (1) “Before Church and State” by Andrew Willard Jones, (2) “The Myth of Religious Violence” by William Cavanaugh, and most importantly (3) “The Politics of the Real: The Church between Liberalism and Integralism” by David Schindler.
