I absolutely understand many of the things this man is saying, Lego has gotten REALLY Expensive, especially since inflation and the cost of living. There is absolutely no way we can get many of these Lego sets with all the other things we have to worry about...

LOTR is full of giant buildings and sets. Allow me to list them. -Bag End (with Hobbiton expansions possible) -Bree (town/city) -Weathertop (built to minifig scale) -Rivendell (expansionable) -Moria (Gates with watcher, inside with several expansions) -Lothlorian (giant trees with buildings in them, expansionable) -The Argonath -Edoras -Helm's Deep (original line was small and very disappointing) -Black Gate (original was just ok) -Dunharrow -City of the Dead -Minas Tirith (literally could and should be the largest castle Lego has ever built. Can come in sections) -Minas Morgul -Osgiliath -Barad-dur -Mount Doom -The Grey Havens They will not run out of ideas even if they only focus on giant builds. There are, of course, a lot of smaller sets too. And pretty much all of these (and many smaller ones) are actually available MOCs via the Chinese markets.

Here's the thing.... the first line of LOTR/Hobbit lego failed because of the exact opposite problem. Loads of small sets with small scenes and only one big build (Orthanc). The critics are absolutely right, LOTR is an adult brand for adult collectors. While I can agree there can be some diversity and especially some "multi builds", the target absolutely needs to go big and hard. The last line was full of crappy half-baked pieces that really aren't worth much. Oh, and they need to stop this stupid brick head nonsense.

The only thing LEGO was testing is if AFOL's would buy a $500 LOTR set every year. They only invest in full IP themes if there is current media targeted at kids (i.e. new LOTR movies, new theme sets). As is, they are willing to bet that adult fans of these properties will be willing to pick up a set or two out of nostalgia, and they want the masses, not just LEGO collectors/enthusiasts.

@@jojoaprilfish absolutely! We need more smaller sets in general, most of all LoTR! Considering the recent Indi wave, I prefer the chase because: the car built is fantastic! The plain as well (i don't use the stickers but added some green and camouflage parts. It's my fav Indiana Jones Film and one of my alltime fav films in general (not top 10 but might make my top 20). Sean Conneries character is the best. Therefore i consider myself extremely blessed for this set (I also missed out on IJ before) 😃

If the line was doomed, Lego would have stopped after Rivendell. Lego designers said after Rivendell's release that if we want to see more sets for Lord of the Rings Rivendell would have to sell well. It obviously did because we then got Baradur... Not sure where you're getting your information but it seems the large sets are selling extremely well and I wouldn't be surprised to see another large scaled set released in a year or two.

As long as Legi Harry Potter is still on shelves the Lord of the Rings will most likely not officially return. Both large sets did so well for Lord of the Rings I can guarantee they are working on the next giant set. When Harry Potter ends their run then LOTR will likely return.

Outside of SW, there's never been a Lego theme more ripe with Army Building potential. It's kind of shocking they haven't done it already. Gondorian soldiers, Rohirrim, Uruk Hai, Mordor Orcs, Easterlings, Haradrim, Army of the Dead, Prologue Elves, the list goes on. And there's multiple different kinds too. Now, here's where I disagree. I'm fine with LOTR getting more expensive sets more often because I think LOTR is, simply put, more grandiose to begin with. The only way to do things like that properly is $500. I'd much rather have, say, a Lothlorien, Mina's Morgul, or Edoras be properly done at $500 than a half-assed one at $100. But here's where I do agree: There's plenty of smaller options that could be done justice in a main line range. The Prancing Pony, Amon Hen's Seeing Seat, Catapults, Ballista's, Siege Towers, the Forbidden Pool, Oliphaunt, Ents, Balrog, etc. There's options for $150 and below sets. And yes, absolutely also options for diorama sets. My mind immediately also went to the Nazgul tree scene too, but I also immediately though of the Door of Moria, the interior of Mt. Doom for the destruction of the ring, the Bridge of Kazad Dum w/ Gandalf and the Balrog, mini scale Mina's Tirith and Argonath, etc.

You are right it’s a terrible way to market an audience and Brock heads are ugly. They need to get on the ball with affordable sets army packs and iconic sets like Amon hen the prancing pony and lothorien. I hear next year they will make a minis tirith as that was teased for next year. We’ll see I hope they don’t screw it up and make it a regular theme. They really need to do better with price and what they are picking and pricing not every fan is rich.

My large Lego purchases need to be saved for HP so LOTR is a pass for me. Rivendell is a great looking set but I also have nowhere to put it. Barad Dur is a hard pass even if it was cheaper. I would consider buying a cheaper diorama in the theme as that could easily be displayed on the bookshelf with the LOTR books. Glad to see you back doing more consistent content! Still one of my top fav Lego youtubers!!

Amazon exclusive? It can also be bought from all the LEGO stores. I think they are purposely doing large sets first so the hardcore fans are forced to buy it as it is their only option. A Modular Minas Tirith would be pretty epic.

I watched your video and still don’t understand your thumbnail. Having high selling, high priced themed sets doesn’t equate “canceled” or to your point at least for many years from now after all big names locations have been hit, but not all themes do continue like Star Wars (and I don’t think all should). I am actually sick of how many times HP redoes things that didn’t need to be redone. We may even see War for the Rohirrim sets upon that release when the movie comes out, but time will tell!

The lord of the rings sets appeal to non LOTR fans of lego (especially castle fans) - love both sets, will do my best to get them, even if they are not a priority for me. But there are better chances I would get smaller sets that have something I like or have pieces I need (like wargs, orcs, nice armor and weapons, so on). I fully support the modular sets part. The only reason I touched the harry potter sets as an adult LEGO collector (outside of getting a few sets here and there for a fantastic creature like bugbeak) is because I LOVED the idea of buying small play set you can play around with and then combining it with others to make a huge castle.

I'd be interested to know how you came to the conclusion that the sets perform poorly on the market. The opposite is true; both big LotR sets were partially out of stock upon release. Additionally, with timely ordering and selling the GWP and minifigures, it was possible to recoup the full purchase price and by another one! Of course, the sets are far too expensive, but LEGO is doing excellently with this strategy (see Star Wars UCS) and will not change it. Many people are not aware that LEGO now appeals to an international audience, and as someone who spends a third of the year in the UAE, I can assure you that hardly anyone there cares whether a set costs $500 or $800.

100% agree, the fact that rivendell and baru dur sold so well even at their price should tell them the market can sustain a full theme. I'd buy some sub £100 sets but I'm not such a big fan that I'll ever drop £400 on a set. I think LOTR would be a great addition to the roster of themes especially if they don't go nuts. A few sets a year could easily keep fans happy and buildings would be great for castle fans. I assume they don't want to conflict with their medieval theme and harry potter being their current fantasy offering but I honestly don't think they would see a decrease in interest or conflict.

  • @marvinbange1216

Lego LOTR roughly falls into the Fantasy/Castle theme, and sadly thats something that Lego pretty much exlusively makes several hundred dollar sets for, think Castle, DnD, Lord of the Rings. The cheapest Set they made in the last 10 years that fits into this general theme is the 3 in 1 castle and thats still a hundred dollars. Im convinced they are fully aware of how badly fans want this stuff back and purposefully only do these uber expesive stuff. The more likely thing they tested is if they can do more of these big sets, and i think its more likely we will see another big one like minas tirith next year instead of a playscale wave. Besides, if they really think they need to test if a Lord of the Rings theme would sell like they claim they are so out of touch with their community that all hope is lost anyways :D I mean LotR is one of the most beloved franchises ever, the aftermarket prices of the old sets and especially the minifigs are absolutely ludicrous and people have been very vocal about wanting LotR, or more generally Castle and Fantasy stuff back for the last decade. Ofcourse a Lotr theme revival would sell like crazy.they thing
