For seasoned ascetics, though self restraint of senses and realisation of Truth -- with a clear understanding of birth and salvation beyond any doubt and distortion of mind -- do away with the effects of misdeeds done in the previous birth and ensure also no chance of any misdeed in future, the effects of the misdeeds done in the current life will remain, as a result of which the following may take place:- The seasoned human mind, as such, may likely undergo a slip (pure knowledge being clouded by infatuation) and therefore susceptible to entertain some sinful thoughts unconsciously, and the impulse due to the intrinsic vestigial desires, traces if any, will surface again with a longing to enjoy earthly pleasures. Thus the spiritual ignorance or mental illusion will lead to rebirth, and therefore to get rid of it completely, strong adherence to realisation of God shall be maintained at all costs! Since this curbing of desires (vestigial) is necessary to keep up realisation of truth attained, this chapter is placed next to "Truth Consciousness Attainment".

Understanding beyond any doubt the reasons for cycle of rebirths and to get rid of the same, practising yoga and realisation of truth ( truth consciousness) are necessary. Since this realisation of spiritual truth can be achieved only after renunciation of earthly desires, this chapter is placed next to "renunciation". Ascetics when unfortunately carried away by fallacies -- misunderstanding both real and false truths -- will face rebirths as demons, animals, human beings in which they have to undergo sufferings. By eliminating ignorance and achieving Truth realisation, one can get happy life that will ultimately do away with cycle of rebirths and give access to reach heaven, the ultimate destiny of mankind. For those ascetics who have realised pure Truth from their inner and outer world experiences beyond any doubt and distortion of mind by transcending various religious dogmas and by practising yoga, the heaven whereby cycle of rebirths gets eliminated is found nearer than the earth, where they live with sufferings due to rebirths. Thus Truth, imperfectly understood will lead to cycle of rebirths only. Feelings arising out of five senses, even if completely overpowered by mind, will be of no use, if realisation of Truth is not done perfectly. Thus for ascetics, realisation of Truth, beyond any doubt or distortion in mind, becomes the foundation on which salvation can be attained is well stressed here. In whatever form anything appears, we initially find that they are made up of a chain of dependent realities, forming cause and effect. If we ponder further, we logically come to the conclusion that the chain of dependent realities originated from one Absolute or Independent Reality, or an initial cause for which there is no other preceding cause to effect the initial cause will be logically concluded. Thus logical conclusion that the entire world starts from one Abdolute Reality is called realisation of Truth. Born as human beings, having obtained pure knowledge by learning, and further digesting the philosophical discourse of learned wise people, thereby realising the Absolute Reality as Truth, are freed from once for all from being born as human beings again on earth. For ascetics, who have analysed with their logical thinking power about the sayings of worldly wise people and finally realised the truth of the permanent Ultimate Reality, thoughts of rebirth will never take place in their minds due to doubt or distortion. Ignorance is the cause of rebirths; realisation of the truth of Ultimate Reality gives access to heaven. Thus true wisdom is realisation of God -- pure independent but pervading the entire universe. Thoughts happening at the time of death, since gets realised in the next birth, thinking God incessantly and also at the time of death takes one to heaven. For those who realised the all pervading in the universe namely the Absolute Reality, and practised yoga, thereby the personal ego gets eliminated along with sufferings caused by those misdeeds in the previous births and still to !come in future, provided the ascetics remain steadfast in their attitude of realising the Absolute Reality and yoga practise. For seasoned ascetics, with their yoga and attainment of spiritual power, not only the after effects of lust, wrath, and distortion of mind will go away from them but also their very names of these non virtues will get faded away once for all. Thus the fact that overpowering our five senses and realisation of God will lead esp. ascetics to live a life of permanent happiness and eliminate the effects of our misdeeds done in the previous birth is well understood here in our Thirukkural!

Attachment with earthly possessions -- possession of feeling of mine in the external world, and that of ego in the inner world -- their impermanence being self evident, tends one esp.an ascetic to do away with them slowly i.e. renunciation, which therefore deserves to be placed next to the chapter "impermanence". Those who curb the desire of possessing earthly wealth are not going to be fitted with any mental agony due, in case of theft of gotten wealth. Difficulties at present we have to undergo in acquiring the earthly wealth, and safeguarding them, and the mental agony we have to undergo when the acquired wealth is lost and the consequent sufferings we have to undergo in our next birth -- all will be done away with in the event of curbing our earthly desires in our mind. Curbing of desires for earthly possessions, apart from eliminating sufferings will simultaneously bring slowly good things, which if ascetics require, should eliminate desires, the process of which consequently makes self restraint of senses to live a righteous way of life as a virtue. Earlier one curbs his desires, longer will be his ecstatical period. For an ascetic whose ultimate aim is to reach heaven, he must give up his earthly pleasures being received from his five senses, and simultaneously do away with senses-pleasure-giving earthly materials, since those materials instill in one's mind to do sufferings and sinful oriented earthly activities and inhibit from doing yoga and attaining spiritual wisdom. Possessing even any single thing of worldly importance will have the effect of calling back all the previously abandoned worldly materials which will naturally stand in the way of doing austerities. Thus any attachment with worldly pleasure giving materials shall be completely eliminated for ascetics who are preparing ways to reach their ultimate destiny. Ascetics whose intrinsic desire is to get rid of cycle of rebirths and having realised the permamence of their physical bodies and therefore attachment with them has to be done away with, and hence their bodies are considered as redundant, what is the necessity of having attachment with other earthly things? Ascetics who eliminate the feelings of conceit of "I" and "Mine" -- human arrogance -- from the bottom of their hearts, will reach the stage above celestial beings. Ascetics, who cling to the feelings of possession of I and Mine, will be susceptible to undergo sufferings for ever and never reach their ultimate destiny. Annihilating attachment is asceticism. Complete elimination of attachment of worldly desires leads to a veritable ascetic life; others who don't, will get entangled in the cycle of rebirths only to undergo earthly sufferings for ever. Only when worldly desires leading to the arrogance of "I" and possession of "mine", are given up, then only rebirth will get cut off, else instability will continue for ever only to face worldly sufferings. God, the Ultimate Reality, is free from attachment. Ascetics who want to renounce earthly desires, desire the attachment with the unattached Ultimate Reality being the pure virtue to be attached for ever. Thus complete renunciation of earthly desires are the pre requisites for an ascetic who want to avoid cycle of rebirths at any cost, and therefore reach heaven is well stressed in our Thirukkural!

The ignorance of ascetics to treat impermanence as permanent i.e attachment with transient earthly possessions and physical body to enjoy earthly pleasures, is ill behoving for them. The slow accumulation of wealth, in the event of good fortune, is like the gathering mass in a theatre from different walks of life before beginning of the show. The sudden loss of gotten wealth, in the event of ill fortune, is like the disbursal of the audience when the show is over. In the event of acquiring perishable wealth by an ascetic due to his good fortune, he must, as quickly as possible with his short life span, practise virtues enduring -- conducting temple rituals and doing charity that leads to gaining of spiritual wisdom and finally attaining salvation. A day time, based on the rotation and revolution of earth around the sun, though seen as ecstatical and enjoyable (permanent) for a layman, yet it is, as learned wise people realise, is just like a saw, having many teeth, hanging over neck, meant to cut one's life slowly and destroy life in the long run -- impermanence of physical life and transient life time is well illustrated here Before approach of death, when bodily infirmity, hiccup and powerless tongue are certain to happen, ascetics, having realised their imminency, must aspire to do good things within their short life span to attain salvation. "Yesterday he was alive, but today he is no more", which is the impermanence of physical life that commands predominance on earth. Those unwise people who don't realise the transient nature of human life period will indulge in fancying in innumerable -- at times reaching crores in number -- comforts and luxuries of life for ever. Thus impermanence of life is clearly shown in the normalcy of unwise people. The relationship between soul and body is like that of a transient fledgling period, taken by a growing fledgling that deserts it's nest after it gets full fledged. Death is nothing but sleep, and birth is nothing but awaking from it. During death, physical body gets destroyed, but the everlasting soul takes another body to continue its life till it gets salvation. Thus birth and death , by their very nature, are ligically like the continuity of sleep and waking. Thus the impermanence of our physical body and material wealth, and even after death the boundless sufferings the soul has to undergo will continue till the soul gets freed from faults, are well stressed in our Thirukkural so as to instil in our minds to develop a desire towards living a righteous way of life of human values and ethics to avoid ultimately the cycle of rebirths!

From the process of self restraint of senses applicable for ascetics, there emerges the dawn of spiritual wisdom in the soul, enlightenment and impulse towards attaining salvation. Four chapters namely impermanence, renunciation, truth consciousness and curbing of desires are excludively devoted to the process of achieving self realisation and finally attaining salvation. Those things once formed are impermanent and will have to face destruction later -- suggestive of inevitability of ending or dying. Thus, ocular mirage, rope on the ground imitating living snake organism are false views (impermanent); but, when it is fully realised with rational thinking power there emerges their true nature. The very slow process of biological growth, though seen permanent, will die later at the old age. All biological organisms will appear permanent when it is endowed with cause of life (soul); but they become impermanent when it is seen in the background of its functioning (biological species). With all differences in vogue, the general consensus that everything formed is impermanent and susceptible to disappear later, can't be challenged. Since realisation of impermanence of earthly pissessions leads an ascetic to giving up his desire to possess the same, this chapter on "impermanence" gains prominence in placing as the first chapter towards the process of gaining spiritual wisdom and ultimately salvation.

The most veritable virtue, that incorporates also the essence of all other virtues, is the incomparable virtue of abstinence from killing any living organism. Resorting to killing will cause intensive sufferings equal to the combined effect of doing all other sins. Thus abstinence from killing as a virtue gains importance esp. for an ascetic. For ascetics, the most important virtue to be followed, as learned people point out, is that of not killing. Distributing food to the needy creatures thereby safeguarding their lives is very much stressed here for ascetics. The virtue of not killing other living organisms, as learned people put it as the incomparable and peerless, stands first, and next comes the truthfulness. Since truthfulness -- self regulation of words (verbal skill) -- relates to the welfare of human beings only, but the virtue of abstaining from killing -- self regulation of action -- encompasses the collective welfare of all living creatures on earth, the latter deserves much importance than the former. To reach heaven or attain salvation what is the virtue to be followed by ascetics? It is guarding steadfastly the virtue of abstinence from killing any living creature, lower or higher in the evolutionary hierarchy. Thus this virtue of abstinence from killing becomes the predominant virtue for ascetics. He who fears from his bottom of heart the inhuman act of slaughtering or killing and therefore adheres to the principle of not killing under any circumstance, even unconciously, is acclaimed as a great person than all those who fearing rebirths, renounce domestic life, and embrace ascetic life. Hence, the exclusive greatness of the virtue of abstinence from killing than all other virtues is very much stressed here. The God of death will not approach those ascetics upholding the virtue of not killing others, thereby being blessed with an extension of life days, and enabling to achieve the attainment of wisdom, which finally gives access to attaining the ultimate salvation. Ascetics shall not resort to killing even in the face of a fatal attack. Direct and indirect killing being considered as equally sinful in all respects esp.for ascetics must be done away with. Killing animals to appease the heavenly people and obtaining wealth, though found fitting for domestic life, shall be completely done away with in the case of ascetics aiming at salvation. Killing any living creature, under any circumstance regardless the purpose, place and advantage gained from it, is considered as a vile, and the persons involved in it though unconciously are treated as base men, as learned people put it. People who are now seen as affected with loathsome diseases, limbs decaying, poverty stricken and doing mean jobs, are those who did the despicable inhuman act of killing other organisms in their previous births, in the words of learned wise people. Thus the act of killing for any purpose shall be eliminated from our minds to live a happy and prosperous life, not even with an iota of suffering, is very much stressed here in Thirukkural!

Man - endowed with thinking power (sixth sense), occupies the topmost position in the hierarchy of evolutionary ladder, and acquired leadership qualities - has as his natural duty to safeguard the lives of all other living organisms (endowed with one to five senses) in the same way as he safeguards himself. He has to abstain from killing other living things for obvious reasons and even unconsciously. As such, this virtue of "not killing other living creatures" gets prominence among all other virtues dealt with so far, and incorporates the essence of all other virtues, the discussion of which warrants a separate chapter in the last of the ascetic penance section. Thus for an ascetic, it is mandatory for him to completely abstain from killing other organisms for no reason .

Doing evils to others out of one's own self interest or enmity or by chance (unconsciously), being morally bad actions, which happens even after elimination of angriness, and with a view to eliminating this practice also, it is placed next to the chapter "abstaining from anger". Inflicting evils on others and thereby causing destruction with a view to getting things of high value shall be carefully eliminated, as advised by people of spiritual strength. Even if an angry person does some evil to us, better not return any evil, and to remain neutral is the principle of men of spiritual strength. Even if a person does some evil on others for no fault of them, doing in turn some harm to him will bring irretrievable loss; for an ascetic, he will lose his richness of penance gained so far. Therefore, for an ascetic, it is safe to ignore the evils done by others, lest the evils be does in turn will become the breeding ground for emergence of other vices, thereby nullifying the richness of ascetic values. For ascetics, the humanely punishment they have to do for evil doers, is to remain benevolent to them, whereby the sublime return will kindle the spirit of repentance and inculcate in the minds of evil doers and to develop sublime feelings of remaining courteous for ever; and finally the ascetic must forget the entire sequence of events, else reminiscences of which reverberate to do malicious haughtiness. "That ye resist not evil; but whosoever shall smite on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also" is the humanely sublime return. For ascetic trainee, imbibed with compassion, of what use of his wisdom, if he does not treat the sufferings undergone by others as if his own. Thus the true wisdom gained by ascetics will instil the extension of compassion towards other living organisms undergoing sufferings and make them to realise the true pain as if they are undergoing. Ascetics who have realised from their worldly experiences about the kind of things that will cause sorrow to others, must abstain from imposing the same to others. Consciously, don't try to do evil even to a person in the lower strata of society, even to a smallest degree since the devastation it produces is large, and at any time - even if one possess the strength to initiate an evil. Those who have realised from their social experience the physical and mental pain of the sufferings meted out to them by others, must not do the same to others. But most people do it. Why it is so? Is is because of their ignorance and discarding the dictates of one's own conscience. For such wantonly doing evils to others, there is no atonement and therefore the doer must undergo sufferings later. If an ascetic trainee does some evil to others before noon time, he is bound to face the effect of the natural rebound of the same evil upon him in the evening time, even if the victim fails to take revenge upon him. Since ascetic trainees are aware of the fact that they will lose their benefits of penance and also face the natural revenge that will come in matter of time, they should abstain from doing such ill deeds. Those who have realised the truth that the present sufferings they are undergoing are nothing but the reflections if their past deeds, and if they want to live a happy and prosperous life now, they should abstain from inflicting sufferings towards others now itself. Thus, doing evil to others under any circumstance must be done away with. He who sows will reap. He who sows discord will reap discord. Action will have consequences. To enable us to live a happy and prosperous life, all the above moral facts are well stressed in our Thirukkural!

For ascetics, to attain spiritual strength, not only do away with anger but also obliterating even thoughts of it from one's mind is mandatory. Since telling lies by other persons may induce angriness to be restrained by ascetic trainees, it is placed next to the chapter "veracity". Ascetics shall have to restrain angriness against their juniors or morally weak persons since it will bring everlasting suffering and ultimate ruin; with seniors, the question of restraining angriness does not arise since human tendency must automatically restrain the same against people in the higher hierarchy of society for fear of retribution. Never resorting to showing angriness against anybody under any circumstance will bring happy and glorious life. It is better to avoid angriness with others, else it will become the breeding ground for emergence of other vices. For ascetic trainee, his angriness will do away with his natural attributes of smiling facial expression and soul full of delight, thereby shaking the very foundation of kindness and compassion on which his life stands, and finally bringing utter ruin to him. There can't be a greater external enemy to him than his own internal emotional angriness. If an ascetic trainee wants to safeguard himself from any external danger, he should restrain his anger at any cost lest the fallout of which will result in losing his ascetic richness and attributes, apart from facing the detrimental effects of his own anger ending in ultimate ruin. Thus the arch enemy of ascetic namely his own emotional angriness must be completely obliterated from his mind. Fire will destroy anything. Similarly, for an ascetic trainee the fire of anger within him will bring devastation not only to him but also cause to lose the helping attitude of his senior ascetics, who, being dissatisfied with his out of character, will finally desert him. Striking the earth with hand, depending upon the force, will cause severe pain or destruction to the hand. Those who regard their anger a noble thing and indulge in raging will face an equivalent suffering or ruin. Though one metes out unbearable cruel persecution, ascetic trainees, as their Godly character warrants, shall refrain at the most from developing feelings of angriness; such restraint deserves much commendation. Such ascetic trainees, doing penance, will never entertain even thoughts of angriness, by virtue of which they will reach their ultimate destiny. Raging ascetic trainees are figuratively deemed as dead since their aim for attaining salvation can't materialise. But those who do away with such malevolent angriness will be praised for ever and their aim of reaching heaven is certain. Thus Thirukkural, dealing with the bad effects of angriness, cautions us from developing even feelings of angriness in our minds, else it will bring us ruin in the long run. Thus angriness, the arch internal enemy of mankind, must be completely eliminated with at all costs, is best dealt with here in our Thirukkural!

Even lies are considered as veritable truths, provided it confers goodness to any sinful individual; it will safeguard him from punishment or stop him from committing suicide and simultaneously compel or force him to change his mind and adopt to live a new better way of life - a turn in his life is achieved! Thus the following are considered as equal to lies:- 1. Telling about an event that did not occur, but in no way brings any good 2. Telling an event that occurred but did not bring any good. The following are considered as equal to truths (veritable):- 1. Telling an event that didn't happen but brings good. 2. Telling an event that happened but brings good. The veritable truth, being what consciousness dictates, deals only with the goodness it gives to others, and has nothing to do with the nature of the relative event. One shall not be under the false impression that what he says as lie, will not be known to external world. Since, his own conscience, the internal world, is the sole witness for all his activities - a natural witness that cannot be done away with - will bring suitable sufferings to him as a divine punishment later. Since lie has its own natural effect of bringing in ruin, it shall not be resorted to under any circumstance. Obeying his conscience and resorting to telling veritable truths the sublime value it carries:- 1. place him in the hearts of wise people 2. he will be considered more important than persons who do the combined acts of charity and penitence. Overcoming the difficult task of earning monetary wealth for domestic life and doing penitence for ascetic life, the act of speaking truth veritable, an easy work, will give the combined effects of doing all other virtues, apart from bringing glory. The benefits of doing all other virtues will reach one, if he unswervingly practises the act of telling truths, lest the benefits of other virtues, in the absence of truth telling, will be of no avail. Our outer physical body gets cleansed by pure water, our inward mind gets cleansed by truthfulness virtue only - apart from the virtue of purity in thoughts. Body cleansing will give a new stimulus to our internal world; cleansing mind will give rise to self realisation. For ascetics, though cleansing body and mind is required, cleansing mind will get prominence. All external lights, both natural and artificial, will drive away the external darkness only, but for wise people (ascetics) these external lights are of no avail to get rid of their internal darkness, for which the pure radiance of the light of truthfulness will only have the desired effect. No other virtue but truthfulness commands a high respect than others, as we find when we go through all philosophical studies seeking true knowledge, transcending the human instinct of lust and angriness. Thus the literary meaning generally given to the words "truth" and "lie", gets modified here according to the humanely benefits it confers on the beneficiaries, a peculiar interpretation done exclusively in our Thirukkural! Thus truthfulness is the leading one of all virtues that give spiritual strength is well established in our Thirukkural!

Truth - the haecceity of which according to the exclusive, sublime and humanely civilised interpretation of Thirukkural - is the uttering of carefully chosen words that the context or circumstances warrant in the interest of humane consideration that in no way brings any harm to any other person - thereby providing a chance to any sinful person who would have realised the divine goodness offered to him by the speaker that would sting his conscience and ensure clean of heart, instantly correct himself for opting to live a better way of life since his inborn human character - provided he has at least an iota of human conscience - will definitely outweigh the vestigial animalistic consciousness in him in his turn of life around. With a view to reiterate the importance of doing away with the ordinary human habit of telling lies for ascetic trainees, this chapter "veritable truth" is placed next to ascetic imposture and coveting.

Ascetic trainees imbued with the aim of seeking salvation, and not being carried away by atheist's logic - therefore duly respected by veritable ascetics - shall not indulge in the act of coveting others' belongings - a despicable act illbehoving for ascetic trainees. He, not blaspheming heaven, being much eulogised by seasoned ascetics, will not even entertain thoughts of secretly stealing away others' belongings - the act being considered as sinful - shall refrain from deceiving others with a view to stealing away surreptitiously their belongings. The coveted monetary wealth, though it appears initially to do something good to the individual, will, in the long run, bring not only more loss than the transitory gain brought, but also wipe away the entire temporal wealth earned honestly, apart from entailing him to undergo an everlasting suffering as a divine punishment. Thus the impulse to carry out the despicable act of coveting others' belongings, if realised in practice, though brings instant euphemereal pleasures will ultimately entail everlasting grief. Ascetic trainees who renounced the feelings of "possession of temporal wealths of mine" but indulge unfortunately in hoodwinking others and coveting their belongings will lose their sanctity since they fail to recognise the highness of compassion which they are warranted to unflinchingly pursue with all kindness, despite any difficulty that may befall them. Those who realised the spiritual truth of life, namely the cause and effect relationship of one's life happiness they enjoy and sufferings they undergo are nothing but the reactions of his past deeds :- 1) will do away with the devilish wisdom of coveting; 2) ascetic life will ever dwell on them, but deceit will dwell in the minds of those yearning for coveting - no other human value they know but only coveting which will lead to developing evil thoughts of deceit, at the instant of which they will perish. 3) but failed to do anything to atone for and ameliorate the bad effects resulting from his past deeds, and not adopting the righteous way of ascetic life, he is considered to be much imbibed in the despicable act of coveting and therefore being found to be unfit for living ascetic way of life, deserving to be deposed from there finally. Thus the act of coveting and living ascetic life of spiritual highness are entirely opposite to each other and never will go together is well established in our Thirukkural!
