A 6 month suspension for 73mph... in the UK you could be driving 73mph on a road similar to that and have people overtaking you!

I‘m glad living in the same country just without ali. You can go there on the motorway with 35mph over the speed limit and end up with an 80eur fine.

Victoria isn't the place to try and speed. Cops don't fuck around here. That being said. That cop was very reasonable and respectful. Even if they wanted to let you go they couldn't. The highway patrol has too many devices wat hing them also

does a shit load over the speed limit... police are mafia.. nah mate... just don't speed.. simple.. i lost my licence speeding once. it was a stupid thing. but its pretty damn simple.. shouldn't be doing more than the speed limit. its that simple. no debates. the road rules are there to be followed, its no suggestion about it, just do the right thing and you'll be right

Based off how the road looks i would have guess it was a 110, dumb speed limit to farm money

Nearly happened to me once, pretty sure cops saw me doing 105 in an 80 near 4am when I rounded the corner I saw two of them waiting at the lights, they proceed to light me up but for some unknown reason when they got up behind me they gave up and just drove off without pulling me over. I still did a u turn and as it turns out I had gotten done by a camera anyway 7km over.

In Australia, we have public healthcare. Even minor speeding is proven to increase your risk of accident greatly. You were going almost 1.5x the limit. Why should the taxpayer pay for your hospital bills?

  • @grmnj

Regardless of what you believe the speed limit should be, if it's 80 and you are driving 118 don't get surprised you're losing your licence, you know exactly what you were doing and what the risks are. The cop was very nice with you.

As an Australian, a car driver for 13 years and a motorcyclist for 2, yes: Aus cops are a ruthless mafia, in the way that someone who has absolute power over someone with absolutely no power is ruthless. Australia is a laughing stock.

License suspensions should only be meted out if the driver has demonstrated dangerous driving AND poor judgement that could have led to a severe accident. The cops should have the authority to decide whether this rider posed a risk to society by being behind a wheel or handlebars. Speeding in a school zone where kids are present (with similar prior offences?) That's an example of poor judgement by someone who shouldn't be driving. Letting out some throttle on your motorcycle (with full gear on - clearly the rider is experienced) on an empty highway in clear sunny conditions? You're fucked for the next 6 months. If this guy was a tradie who's job relied on driving then he is absolutely shit out of luck. And this is all from the state where getting caught going 5km over the limit in a 40km zone by a fixed speed camera nets you a demerit point and a $260 AUD fine. Absolute fucking bullshit. That's the one thing I hate about Australian road policing. Everything is uniform and no exceptions are given out. They work for themselves and the state, not the community and that's exactly why everyone hates the Highway Patrol.

A good friend of mine is in the VIC traffic police, and they were told by their superiors to have zero tolerance when it comes to speeding. They aren't allowed to use any discretion, it's strictly by the book. This was a couple of years ago, but I would assume it's still the case.

People complaining about how "slow" our speed limits are. Anyone who has seen at least one Dash Cams Australia video will know just how terrible drivers in this country are, we can't be trusted with high speed and all people have to do is not speed.

Speed limits are artificially low on too many roads and highways in too many jurisdictions just to steal more money from people in the name of "safety". It's a disgrace. Driving under the influence and hesitant/indecisive/unpredictable drivers are far more dangerous.

Nah you've gotta play nice when it comes to Aussie highway cops, they have a lot of discretion when it comes to what fines they do or do not give out. If you aren't forthcoming with their questions they take that as slight and will throw the book at you. It's fucked.

Losing your license over something minor like that is crazy. Once in the middle east I got a fine for driving 50-75 kms over speed limit, the limit was 120kph. It was something like 135 Australian dollars. No demerits or anything.
