The Beatles Interviews

The Beatles Interviews

I have been collecting Beatles and Solo interviews for 30 years and often wondered if anyone else would be interested in this geeky corner of Beatledom. At the last count I have approximately 1000 and still growing. I'll be posting at least one a week depending on how busy life gets. So from 62 and their first ever interview to what ever is happening now. Thanks for joining and I hope you find the interviews interesting and engaging. One note of caution Our John does like to lead us up a garden path or two on occasion.

John was murdered just about a month after Reagan was elected president. The Oligarchy didn't want Lennon commenting on Reagan and the Moral Majority and the right wing agenda. So they sent the murderer to NYC.

He seemed more level headed and better than his early 70s interviews. He was still witty and brutally honest, but he seemed more calm and enthusiastic. It’s a shame what happened to him.

Good to see this here. I originally posted the audio of this interview about ten years ago, in two parts on small scale KZread channel. So hopefully it gets more hits here. After the interview was transcribed (only partially and heavily edited) and published in the Red Mole newspaper the cassette tape it was on was tossed into the bin in the offices of the International Marxist Group. As it happened, a young IMG member (and decades later a friend of mine) Richard Hatcher retrieved the tape and subsequently had it enhanced by an AV technician at the University where he worked, and put onto a CD. It was this that he handed to me in 2013 and asked if I had any ideas what to do with it. I was told by Tariq Ali that the same IMG office had Jagger's hand written lyrics to Street Fighting Man on the noticeboard for a few years until someone also binned them. No-one back then had much idea of the historical or cultural, let alone financial, value of such ephemera...

The thing is, Paul selling George, John, and Ringo as head over heels in stupor with Allen Klein is just mythology. This is like McCartney telling you the idea for Sgt. Pepper came from Mal Evans not being able to identify what sachets are. This is a man who drives them up and down the motorway. Took them to airports. Booked them into hotels. This is a man who does not know what salt & pepper sachets are on a plane? Allen Klein's history with The Beatles starts in 1964. Brian Epstein turns down an offer from him on part of The Beatles pie. He announces in June 1966 he wants them as clients. In November 1966, it makes British newspapers that he has two of them. (it is believed that it's Harrison and Lennon he has obtained) Brian Epstein, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr all deny these claims of Klein's. They said he was talking bullshit. They're not even dealing with the man yet, and they already see he's bullshit. And he says this at a time when their contract with Epstein had not been renegotiated yet, and it was overdue. The only Beatle that did not like Epstein's management was McCartney. The only Beatle in London between September through November 1966 to be negotiated with is McCartney. Everyone else is in Spain or India. The press follow these Beatles to the corners of the Earth to find out if they're leaving Epstein, or if they're breaking up. McCartney? Goes completely off grid. I didn't think Beatles could do that in 1966. For two months no less. The only Beatle that could not be reached for comment about Klein's claims is McCartney. He's now out of town, still off grid, when the other 3 are back. One author has suggested it's McCartney bringing Klein in in the first place. I have a hard time disagreeing with that theory.

Harrison : So we worked something out, which is still a joke really. 3 songs for me, 3 songs for Paul, 3 songs for John, and 2 songs for Ringo. But that is the main problem you see. Howard Smith : Why did Ringo only get two? Harrison : Well, because that's fair. That's what you call being fair. When he contributed that one song, "Don't Bother Me", it was before the formation of Northern Songs. George Harrison and Ringo Starr were completely left out of this formation, even though George Martin was asked if he wanted partnership. He hadn't written a song! He just produced them. In a 1964 interview he stated that the only problem he really had was lyrics. He felt that he could come up with as many songs as Lennon & McCartney once getting over that obstacle. In 1964, he is absolutely confident in himself that he will achieve this. He stops writing songs for them after the Northern Songs formation leaves him and Ringo as "Employees for Hire." But in September 1964 he gets his own publishing company. Which gives him 100% copyright ownership, and 80% of the publishing royalties. In December 1964, the publishing company is named Harrisongs Ltd. It gives the artist a deal few were seeing at this stage in the music industry. But he submits no songs using this entity, until he is offered partnership in Northern Songs, with no ownership, and less than what Lennon & McCartney make in April 1965. Which to be fair is expected. They are writing the bulk of the hits. But at the same time, that a composer earns less on his contributions than the other performers on the song do, is kinda wack. A year later, he's secured the opening song on the new Beatles album. This is a big deal. And it's a shame that McCartney, in particular, was telling this man (his friend) that his songs weren't good. One could say he said "as good as Lennon or McCartney songs", but I say any person in your band telling you you're no good at something, shouldn't be in a band. They should go solo, where they can tell hired musicians they're no good. You don't do that to members of your own band. The love you take is equal to the love you make. Well there's no love in telling your bandmate his songs aren't good. "Taxman" kicks ass. I find it no surprise McCartney jumps on its solo. Engineer Norman Smith stated McCartney started being dismissive of Harrison's playing ability in 1965. Probably after "Yesterday" went to his head. Or people started telling him he was the Beatle that mattered. It's a shame that McCartney sued the others just as Harrison broke free of this band that didn't fully appreciate him. Or support the idea that a band could have THREE WRITERS that churned out hits for The Beatles. It's better for the band right? Right? But McCartney, even by 1969, is still seeing this guy as a threat when he writes a song. The transcripts for the Get Back sessions, which are far more illuminating than Jackson's film, show that Harrisongs are getting disregarded. He begins running them through "For You Blue", which had already been performed a few times, but McCartney introduces it to Lennon like it's something he's never heard before. He does the same with "I Me Mine." And then returns them instead to rehearsing a McCartney tune, rather than this new song. Even though he has planned to have 20 - 30 NEW SONGS READY WITHIN A 2 WEEK PERIOD FOR A LIVE TV BROADCAST WITH A BAND THAT HASN'T PERFORMED BEFORE THE PUBLIC IN THREE YEARS. Well here's 1 more song for your project. He pushes it to the side to do something that's already been rehearsed again and again. ("Two of Us") It's not like Harrison has an easier time with Lennon. Because Yoko Ono is doing a majority of his talking for him during these sessions. But at least Lennon suggests to McCartney that future Beatle albums should be a bit more democratic. McCartney still thinks Harrisongs aren't good enough. Even though 1968 yields the demo for "Something." And he's writing "All Together Now." His peers, like Ray Davies and Pete Townshend are starting to write Rock Operas at this stage in their artistic development. McCartney's still writing jingles and ditties. Or maybe it's that Harrison sold all his shares in Northern Songs in 1968 when his contract expired. And now Harrisongs is in place, where he earns the lion's share of the profits, NEMS gets 20%, and he OWNS HIS MATERIAL. McCartney & Lennon are looking at a future where they own nothing. But McCartney is buying out Lennon's shares behind his back, so don't worry George! They're not a team like it's being promoted. That the idea to find a manager they all agreed on was never on the table (Robert Stigwood???), tells you a McCartney led Beatles was something the other 3 dreaded. "After Brian died, we collapsed. Paul took over and supposedly led us. But what is leading us, when we went round in circles? We broke up then. That was the disintegration." John Lennon 1971. This tells you Brian Epstein was the 5th Beatle. They couldn't survive without him. There's also a surprising quote from Ringo Starr in 1969, that I am having trouble finding (!!!!! it's my fault, bookmarking lack) where he says McCartney was leading them, even though McCartney denies it. Starr rarely comments on such things. But when you look at McCartney's track record when leading them, he led them into one disaster after another. Magical Mystery Tour, the film, was rejected by the American market. This is a first. Because America would sell anything The Beatles came up with. Twice over if they could. This is not a success. This is a failure to cut off your primary market. The creation of Apple, which Harrison clearly states is McCartney's idea, disaster. The sessions for "The Beatles" would result in Ringo Starr quitting the band. How one gets Ringo Starr to quit a band I do not know. The "Get Back" sessions would result in a poorly planned project, in an unworkable rehearsal space, and ANOTHER member quitting. Harrison. The film "Let It Be" failed at the box office as well. Dismally. They would rather go with a known shark in Klein, than continue with a McCartney led Beatles. And they knew he was a shark back in 1966. His history with The Beatles goes back to 1964. He announced his intentions to manage them in June 1966. In November 1966 he claims he has two of them as clients (it is believed it's Harrison & Lennon), even though the only Beatle in town to negotiate with Klein is McCartney all throughout September through November 1966, and the only Beatle who did not deny the claim was McCartney, cuz now he's out of town when it hits the newspapers. Harrison, Lennon, Starr and Brian Epstein all said Klein was talking bullshit. One author has suggested it's MCCARTNEY that brings in Klein to begin with. Because McCartney is the only one unhappy with Epstein's management. And Epstein knows it. I'm inclined to believe there might be some truth to this, because something funny is going on! Plus how does a Beatle go off grid for 2 months when he lives in the centre of London. Harrison was about to cash in when he started his solo career. McCartney suing the other 3, tying up earnings in court receivership, stopped that huge turnaround in his songwriting fortunes. And because he was an alright guy, he let Billy Preston OUT of his Apple contract, allowing Billy to avoid the whole court receivership that surely would have killed his career. As an Apple CEO, he can do this. It's a shame McCartney didn't let Badfinger out of their contracts.

So George was giving the same amount of tracks as Paul and John on each album and is complaining. The real truth is that his songs were always subpar compared to the others until Abbey Road. All 4 Beatles always voted on the best songs for each album along with George Martin's input. George's songs were just not as good as the others. Simple as that.

Yoko was in on the hit. She even acknowledged she was a witch, which many people already knew. Open your minds, people. Why wasn't JL killed while he and the witch were on their way to the studio? Because there was a photographer standing there. That's the guy who took the patsy's photo getting his album signed. The real assassin (Jose Perdomo) had to delay the hit until they returned later that night. No photographer there then.
