Modern Homestead Alaska

Modern Homestead Alaska

Welcome to Modern Homestead Alaska! We are large family taking on a "modern" Homestead in the beautiful state of Alaska.

A modern homestead is a place that lives in between the old ways and the new. Modern in use of running water indoor plumbing and electricity, access to health care and services like shopping and eating. Modern in road access and ease of travel. But it keeps the old ways or living in many of them. No service for things like gas or propane. Heating with wood and cooking with fire. Well water and septic on site, harvesting heating wood from the land, fishing, hunting and growing food. Bulk shopping of the most basic homestead supplies. Cooking from scratch and taking very little help from the store. Staying away from pre packaged processed and foods with no value. We make exception (that’s the modern part)!
It’s spending the day physically working hard, playing hard and kicking your feet up listening to the sound of the fire crackle knowing you earned the rest.

After I got over long haul Covid, it's not that I couldn't eat beef but I can't touch it or even look at it raw. Just turns my stomach. Good thing my husband does 98% of our cooking...lol. New subscriber.

In regards to not being able to drill a well, what do you mean by the "quality of the water". Surely it can be filtered to remove any contaminants.

  • @modernhomesteadalaska

The nearest well is so full of oil it has cost the owner 60k so far and they still don’t have useable water. To be honest we had never heard of such a thing until we had 3 well drillers come over and all 3 said we can’t drill drinking or useable water in this specific area. Trust me 1000% we wouldn’t do it this way if we had any other choice.

So about $8.20 (USD), about $13.50 (NZD) kg of NZ lamb, you know we pay between $16.99 (NZD) on a good day and $25 (NZD) usually for this IN New Zealand! You buy our meat cheaper than we do...... and, it will be export quality while we get the seconds, hard to figure how all that works eh :)

On the large 50# bags we sealed all but the last 1/4 so we were ahead of the game. Then drop the O2 absorbers in and hit with the iron on the last section. This makes the O2 absorbers open to air for a much shorter time.
