Tiny Cabin PNW

Tiny Cabin PNW

Growing up, summers were a mix of building alongside my grandpa and hiking Montana peaks. When we reached creekside meadows or summited jagged peaks, I would usually say with excitement "we should build a cabin here!" My grandpa would chuckle at my naivety, and we would continue our hike.

40 years later I finally had the opportunity to build the cabin of my childhood dreams. This is the story of building that dream.

Join us as we journey through each step of building our off-grid tiny cabin in the Pacific Northwest mountains.

    Very cool video. You mentioned in the comments that the beams are attached to the posts using 14" lag screws. I was wondering if you end up adding some brackets to keep it in place, but also, do you "toenail" the screws? Thank you for the video!

  • @tinycabinpnw
    @tinycabinpnw2 күн бұрын

    I was planning on adding diagonal 4x4 bracing to give it extra wind resistance strength and also add steel straps to further strengthen the bond between the beams and the posts. I didn't toenail the screws, they were put in straight vertical into the end grain of the posts. Not the best for holding again uplift, but I figured that plus the straps should secure it well.

    You used 8 piers? Would that do for a 10x24 too? Do you want a foundation build job in Asheville NC?

  • @tinycabinpnw
    @tinycabinpnwАй бұрын

    Yes, I did use 8 piers. It all depends on the weight-bearing characteristics of your soil. Take a look at the description and it should walk you through the calculations and tools I used. Sorry, I'm afraid my day job would keep me from giving you a hand on your project. I bet there are some great areas around there for cabin builds!

    I'm doing a 10 x 24ft. Is yours to residential code? Mine has to be. How much did it cost you? Great work! If it's to code do you have plans / specs?

  • @tinycabinpnw
    @tinycabinpnwАй бұрын

    You would have to look into you local residential code to determine if it meets code for your area. Unfortunately I didn't come up with a set of plans for this project. I basically had a vision for what I wanted it to look like and I started building. For the foundation I did run the math calculations to determine my cabin would need 8 piers. I believe I currently have about $12k into the project.

    I did the exact same thing. I had that rim board supported with those GRK ledger screws and you could put the weight of an elephant up there.

    Are you using 4x4's or 6x6's

  • @tinycabinpnw

    I used 6x6s for the foundation sitting on Camo Blocks to distribute the weight over more soil.

    If it has electricity it’s not “off grid” is it?

  • @tinycabinpnw
    @tinycabinpnw2 ай бұрын

    The plan is to power the cabin with solar panels and a backup generator if it’s ever needed. With that setup do you still think it qualifies as “off grid”?

    Did you really build the deck without the treated lumber?

  • @tinycabinpnw
    @tinycabinpnw3 ай бұрын

    The framing is pressure treated and the decking is cedar. It has similar rot and pest resistance to redwood but was more economical.
