Brian May doesn't fit in in these kind of environmens. Much as in the live with "Steely Dan", if it's still here. Ask yourself why "Queen" only had one guitarist.

I caught the 'No Substitutions' tour at Lucille's in Manhattan. Luke and Larry signed copies of the CDs and shook hands with everyone. We were seated for the first show, and they invited us to hang at the bar for the second show while the incoming audience took our seats. I sneaked in during soundcheck, and just the vibe between them was worth the admission. It only got better after that.

I like the way Brian comes on feeling like he's surrounded by Gods (which he is, of course), yet, he aquits himself with total aplomb, and sounds just as cool and awesome as the other two (quietly, I think he plays some of the best licks, haha!).

All the ‘this one is better’ comments and all the ‘he is awful’ comments are completely missing the point here. Three guitarists just having fun with buckets of mutual respect. It’s not a competition and it doesn’t always have to be ‘perfect’ or even ‘good’. Sometimes it’s just fun.

Typically I hate, hate, hate 12 bar blues jams. But the only time this one stopped being awesome is when they allowed the guy with the harmonica (excuse me, "blues harp") to play. Because I really, really, REALLY don't like the blues harp. I'll know if I've gone to hell after I die if all the musicians in the bands play blues harp, banjo, Caribbean Steel drums, bagpipes, triangles, and Swinettes. The six instruments that suck the very most. They'd be proof I'm in hell.

All of this actually makes me feel better as a guitar player. I mean, no doubt these guys are great. Carlton is clearly the best blues player (and possibly the best player overall), and May and Lukather are virtuosos in their own right. But what this performance demonstrates is that even the best guitar players are not at their best in all circumstances and/or styles. It's easy to get down on oneself because one can't play like so and so... but that's okay. Find your own strengths, develop those, and become great at being YOU.

May is not much of a blues player. Steve is shredding to much. Larry Carlton is kind of weird. Throw Neal Schon in the mix. Oh boy is one heck of a blue player second to non and he’s melodic guitar work.
