That's why you're not a true bilingual. You're still in the double-standard phase where you don't follow the universal rule of it only being logical and fair to speak Japanese as a default for the simple reason because you are in Japan. I am always polite and ignore the fact that the Family Mart clerk is foreign and I just speak Japanese to them like normal. I also have experience during my college years here in Japan working at a convenience store myself and that's what I would prefer. It was very rare that customers would try to talk to me in English though. The thing is, if you don't keep your rules straight, then people will have every reason to attempt speaking to you in English. My logic is: This is Japan so everyone should firstly be allowed to speak Japanese as an equal. I mean, if I were in The United States, it would be rude to just take the liberty to try speaking to me in anything other than English.
