    I just use our oven on the "Cleaning" cycle. It removes the buildup and takes it down to bare metal. Then, I wash in hot water / no soap and dry it. THen coat in vegetable oil, and I throw it on the gas grill and reseason it outside so that it doesn't smoke up the house. There's no need to use caustic lye!

    Holy shit $12.00 a gallon??? That's nuts, we don't live in Hawaii. Our local farm sells it for $4.00 a gallon. If we show up with our own jugs and it's poured out straight from the bulk tank, then it's $3.00 a gallon. American greed is gonna definitely cause people to starve. I just keep thanking YAH for our blessings.

  • @RowesRising

    I believe it’s so costly because it’s high desert and high demand. It costs a lot to feed the cows- having access to pastures and the water to keep growing forage etc. plus the long winters. “grass fed” milk from the store is $6 a half gallon😅

    @@RowesRising I'm more or less talking about all of America as one. This country is a greedy nation and this is why everything costs a fortune. It's ALL ran on greed. For instance, hay here is a bumper crop here for this area. So instead of spreading the wealth in a not so greedy way, people will either let it go to mold or charge an arm and a leg to transport and sell to an area that wasn't so lucky. I seriously think this is all a test from the Most High YAH to see who is full of greed and who is giving.

    100% agree, everything in moderation! You have a very realistic view on food and feeding your family! For years I put so much unnecessary pressure on myself to have our diet be as close to “perfect” and everything from scratch as I could afford …Now I’m seeing it’s ok once and a while to buy chicken nuggets (gasp) and give my kids GF store bought cookies here and there. Keep sharing, it’s very encouraging to me❤

    Or....or...and hear me out on this one, you can avoid the fancy lye bath with all of the disposal and safety issues, spray the pan completely with lye based oven cleaner, put it in a sealed plastic bag in the sun and them wash it off in the sink. Repeat as many times as needed. This is how collectors do it Also, grapeseed oil works better and is much, much cheaper. .

    after the iniitial soaking, did you reuse the same dirty lye bath or a new one?

  • @RowesRising
    @RowesRising5 күн бұрын

    You can use the same dirty lye water over and over and over. I have watched a few other cast iron reatorers who keep the same tote full and do many pans and only dump yearly. I dumped mine in a back corner of the yard we don’t use where we burn debris because I don’t restore pans often enough to justify keeping it around with small children.

    If you want a simpler way to do it... When it's somewhat hardened food in it because I waited too long to clean it, I use a little water and coarse sea salt... rub that in and repeat, usually handles a little grime. But when I need to clean my iron really good, or when I buy a used one and they are rusty, I'll do the salt thing a few times and then I use my stoves' self cleaning function. I pop them in a few at a time and let it run its cycle, let them cool off. Clean them up and then put them on the stove top to heat them up. I get it hot enough to where if I try and grab the side rim it's too hot... I then poor a little olive oil and spread it all over with a rag... do the sides and back also. Male sure it's all evenly coated. I've been doing mine like this for over a decade, they still look great!

  • @RowesRising

    Right now I have some in stored buckets and some in a tote. Some bulk amounts that I haven’t bagged yet are in half gallon glass jars vacuum sealed. All are stored in the garage for my long term food storage. I do have some freeze dried in jars in my pantry we are rotating through. The nuts I will rotate through sooner as they aren’t a super long term stored food. I try to use them within a year and vacuum sealing is the best way to keep them the freshest possible. I hope this helps! I have a whole pantry playlist and food preservation playlist that may help.
